Strengths:    Light and durable.

Weaknesses:    Brakes. Juicy 3's are terrible! Grips.

Bottom Line:
This bike climbs like no other bike I've ever rode and is extremely comfortable for long rides. I've put a lot of time on super rocky technical climbs/descents and the handling and durability is amazing. This is my first 29er and by far the most fun bike I've ever swung a leg over. I ride this bike everyday while my $4000 full suspension bike sits in the garage.

Strengths:    This is a review for the 2010 Specialized Rockhopper 29er SL Comp. Red frame and rims. Very good component set relative to entry level 29ers and intermediate 26ers I tested the day of purchase. Everything about this bike feels solid. Great smooth feel road or single track. I am 6' 210 lbs. Always felt cramped on 26ers; this was the right frame, component group, and price that I knew would last me for a few years. I also felt the Gary Fisher/Trek 29ers in the same frame size (21) felt cramped like a 26er, but that is just me - the geometry of this bike felt right for my body.

Weaknesses:    Very few if any. Would have preferred thicker grips. Wasn't wild about red rims, but I purchased the last one which was a recent floor demo so got ~$400 off retail. So, I only made a compromise on rim color.

Bottom Line:
Definitely try one or similar Specialized 29er depending on the year you are buying if you like a longer reach. I tested 7 bikes (Specialized, Trek and Gary Fisher/Trek)the morning I set out to buy, which the sales tech kept feeding me without hassle as he wanted me to get the right fit, then the right component set to keep me happy. It also felt very natural fit-wise going from a roadbike to the SL Comp 29er as I have a longer torso and arms.

So, bottom line: extremely happy!

Strengths:    Light frame, strong components, awesome design, 29er, fast.

Weaknesses:    Front shock is 80mm. 100mm seems to be the norm now, but 80mm is just fine by me.

Bottom Line:
I decided to get a 29er hardtail because I missed my old hardtail and I rode a friends 29er and loved it. So I spent 4 weeks researching bikes before I bought this one. I test rode a '10 Gary Fisher Mamba, a '11 Trek Cobia, a '10 Giant Talon 29er, '11 Cannondale Trail 29er, '10 Niner Air 9 and the '10 Specialized Rockhopper Comp SL and this bike blew me away. When test riding it I couldn't believe how much lighter and more responsive this bike was than the others. I was able to buy it cheaper than the listed $1300 because it was a demo bike. But I would have payed the full price for this bike just because it was that awesome. Now I'm hitting the local singletracks and loving it instead of just liking it. Plus, when I ride with my wife, it's great for pounding the pavement.

Strengths:    Beautiful paint job- I get many compliments from other riders on the trail. M4 SL (superlight) alloy frame is very strong and responsive, and fairly light - a great frame to build on. Climbs very well, increased my climbing ability by at least 30% if not more. Fast, keeps a line well.

Weaknesses:    Tires- fast, but no grip and to soft for technical singletrack, slips when climbing and offers no cushion, very squirrely.

Bottom Line:
I took a nasty spill on my 09 Rockhopper and flipped over handles bars, tearing my shoulder completely from my collar bone and shoulder blade. I'm 6'4" and decided I needed a 29er, a bike more built for my frame. Well, I can't tell you how much I like this bike, beautiful (unique looking), strong, responsive and fast. A perfect frame to upgrade with. And boy does this bike climb, just amazing-- and not bad on down hills either. Comes with decent parts that can handle just about anything until you decide to upgrade. Definitely change the tires if your doing any kind of technical single track.
