Weight, stiffness, handling, possibility of very wide range of configurations
DT Swiss rear shock, but change that and get blown away
9 in 10 reviews written about the Scott Genius 700 series basically state "what a bike, if it was not for the DT rear shock that can not keep up". True.
Built up this bike starting from frame and shock as all Genius 700 series complete bikes were sold out since long over here and just one 700 SL frame in my size was left. Set it up very similar to factory specs out of the carbon wheels replaced by American Classic AM.
The mix of very low weight, stiffness, handling and the wide range of configurations you can set thanks to the adjustable travel (160-120) fork, front-rear remote controlled CTD and even bottom bracket height, con easily make of it from a light and fast cross country bike to an aggressive trail one, at a finger's touch.
First 2 rides and immediately realized the issue with the rear shock, good for climbing but going down is a bit of a nightmare.
As many said , despite trying all possible sag settings it really can not keep up with the front Fox Talas, the rear wheel is sketching all around even on moderate obstacles, taking away most of the confidence needed to let the bike go.
Went home a bit depressed, but feeling the potential of the bike (and the money already invested in it) decided to throw in the last effort and replaced the rear DT Swiss with an as well remote controlled Fox CTD Kashima.
Boys!!! Next ride I was laughing by myself all the way up and down.
As near to perfection as it can get, it floats on everything.
Heard recently for 2014 Scott may be be considering the swap as well (?), bet so!
If you got any Genius 700 this year make yourself a big gift and do it yourself.
