Light, comfortable & stable. Holds 70oz, enough for a decent ride. Easy to fill & clean.
Weaknesses:
I found the waist strap not needed and uncomfortable so it is not used. The bladder gets a little hard to open if it is tightened too much.
Bike Setup:
two wheels, a frame, handle bars, seat and variuos other components.
Bottom Line:
I feel this is an excellent hydration pack for a 1-2 hour ride. I bring along an extra bottle in real hot weather but rarley need it. Some may need less or more fluids but for me this is about perfect. For those having problems with the plastic backing bulging out I feel they are loading the bladder incorrectly. I had the problem twice and noticed it only happens when I try and force the bladder in. If I just get it started and shake it down it slides in just fine and leaves plenty of room in the pockets for anything needed for a 2 hour ride. Filling the bladder is very easy with the extra large opening. I can use the ice dispenser on the fridge door for when I need to add ice. The large opening also makes it easy to clean.

this camelbak is soooo light. it feels so great to have this for your short under 2 hour rides. I actually can ride faster now because im not carrying a huge jansport pack (and i mean huge 1800 cu in). the insulated tube is great! hear in sandy eggo it gets pretty hot. with this tube the water stays cool and refreshing. also i like the pinch thingy on the bite valve. now i dont have to risk getting my pants wet from the valve (most of the time that doesnt happen). the top of the bladder is right on the pack. if you open up the first zipper/valcro the top is right there. you can just hold your backpack under the sink, fridge water, gatorade thingy or whatever
Weaknesses:
cant carry much. you could probably fit your cell phone, your wallet, your car and house keys, and maybe a bar of candy or enrgybar. this shouldnt be used for long rides.
this is a great backpack if you dont want to go too far. it doesnt carry much, therefore it is so lightweight. I used to not even bring any water for my under 2 hour rides. but now i can where this and it will feel the same as.....having nothing on my back. If you want to get a high quality camelbak- put your faith in the Rocket.

Bottom Line:
This is the perfect hydration pack for my riding style. The ventilation system is a very desirable feature. After coming back with a dripping wet shirt several times after 2 1/2-3 hour long rides using the Lobo, it got old really fast. I haven't had any problems with the X-Brace bulging out. The brace is pretty thick and takes quite a bit of force to invert it, so those having a problem with it are either gorillas, or your bladder is filled to the brim and looks like a balloon fish! I don't fill the bladder to the brim, but fill it to the 40-45 oz. mark (about 3/4 full). It is a tight fit in the pack, but holding the Rocket by the carrying loop and shaking it, helps the bladder to drop into place. The baffled bladder is a slick feature. It doesn't make the gurgling sounds when hitting bumps like the Lobo's bladder. I suspect you'll really feel the difference when doing some high speed, g-force inducing turns, or extreme downhill runs. The Rocket is also more comfortable around the shoulders than the Lobo. The Lobo feels narrower and more restrictive on upper body movement. The Rocket feels wider on the shoulders, allowing more upper body movement. The ventilated shoulder straps are a nice touch, too. The Rocket is also shorter than the Lobo by several inches. Because it sits up higher on your back, it seems to give a more balanced feel when riding. The Lobo had a tendency to feel like it's putting more weight on your lower back and butt, shifting your center of gravity to the rear of the bike. I do agree with everyone else on the limited amount of cargo capacity in the Rocket. If you're thinking of giving up your seatbag and putting everything in the Rocket, that's not going to happen. You'll be lucky to pack an energy bar, a very small cell phone, your car keys, and not much else. The neoprene insulation around the water tube works like a charm. No more warm water for the first gulp! For those having a problem drying the bladder, go to Walmart and pickup a pack of wiffle balls in the toy department. They are plastic balls with a lot of open slots cut into them. They are about the size of a baseball. I drilled out even more holes for better drying and airflow. I stick one in each side of the bladder to dry it out, and it works great! The Rocket is basically designed as a high performance hydration pack, period. It keeps your back cool (and you comfortable), has an excellent center of gravity feel, and allows great upper body movement with little restriction. It is not an all day pack that you can stuff full with everything you can think of. If you're looking for a high performance hydration pack for serious riding, this is the one to get. You can always refill it if you run out of H20, and you're back in action. It's a lot harder to try to make an uncomfortable pack into a comfortable one. If you're planning on stuffing a gallon of water on your back, and want to carry your entire toolkit, get a MULE or a Blowfish. Sorry, but you can't have both. I choose performance first. It works for me!

I don't know anything about this "X-brace" people are mentioning... either it was removed before I bought mine (if that's possible) or I just never noticed it. Yes it gets awkward when you fill the bladder and stuff a pump and tube in the storage space as well, but I don't really care. Usually I go for short rides anyway and get by with half full bladder and just my keys. Any Camelbak would work for that. Bottom line is: the ole' Rocket has frayed edges and white sweat rings all the way around and I keep using it just about every weekend, summer spring, fall, and to complete the cliche, winter. I just bought this, even though the reviews made me nervous. All the talk about how you can't fold the plastic frame back once you fill it with water concerned me the most, but I've not had any problems with this. I fill it to the brim, fold the frame back out, and it fits just fine. As for the cargo space, it is diminished when the bladder's full, but there's still some room in there, mostly at the bottom below the bladder. Probably enough room for a tube, cell phone, wallet, keys, and tire levers, but I haven't tried stuffing it with much yet. Anyway, I've never posted a review on here before and I wanted to let people know that the reviews below may not be accurate for the latest version of this pack. This review is for the '03 or '04 model (newer version) I purchased this model because I ruined the bladder in my older Rocket Camelbak, & the complete unit wasn't that much more than a replacement reservoir.
Like other people have stated the exo-skeloton just dosen't work with a full reservoir. Eventually I removed the plastic exo-skeloton which makes the unit much more usable (although no back cooling affect), but your able to get more storage out of it. Since I still have backpack from the older version, I'll switch the reservoir between the two. (Older Rocket = more storage, Newer Rocket = more aero dynamic)

Looks. I like the versatility of the straps with the way you can just do belly, or chest, or both. The insulated mouth tube keeps the water cooler than it normally would be. The insulation inside the pack keeps the water cool.
Weaknesses:
Design. There is a plastic exo-air piece in the back that is designed to be concave to keep the pack off your back. When you fill it up, you bend the plastic panel out to "open" the water pouch. The problem is, when you fill the reservoir any more than 1/2 way and have any gear in the pack, that plastic piece remains convex so the entire pack rests on your back. I spent the extra $$ for a pack that kept the sweat off my back, but this design flaw turns this bag back into just a regular old camelbak.
I spent a lot of time researching camelbaks online, reading countless reviews but only 1 or 2 reviews touched on this subject. If I had to do it over again I would buy a different camelbak.
I mostly bike 2 - 3 times per week for about 1.5 hours each ride so the water capacity is fine. All I can carry in the pak is a pump, first aid kit, cell phone, energy bar, and keys. It would be nice to have room for some small tools.

If the exo air system worked properly, this would be an awesome bag. I look forward to the end of my ride when there is barely any water left so the pack functions properly and stays off my back....very cool(temperature-wise).
I wish it had a little more storage capacity for equipment.
I recommend Camelbak, but not particularly this model.

This is a review of the 2004 model. I love this hydro pack. Its ergonomic design makes it light and unobtrusive. The lockable bite valve is great. Holds enough water for a 2-hour ride, and since my regular route takes 1-2 hours, it's perfect. The "cooling system" works V well in that it allows for airflow between my back and the pack itself. My only gripe is the frame. While it enhances ergonomics, making the pack contour nicely to the curve of my back, it also means that when the bladder is full, internal storage is compromised somewhat.

Bottom Line:
This review is for the 2004 model - which looks different from the one pictured here. This is my favorite Camelbak to date. Keeps water cold and does not make my back as hot as others. In my opinion, the frame and padding work as advertised in allowing air to circulate between your back and the pack. For me, all of the storage in the other packs is a waste. I rarely ride more than 3 hours and between my jersey pocket, the storage pockets on the Camelback, and my seat bag, I can carry all the tools, tubes, and snacks I need.
I live in Oklahoma and ride in some brutally hot weather. The only complaint I have about this and all other backpack type hydration systems is that it is difficult to know how much you're drank (and how much is left). With a bottle, I know when it's half gone. With the Camelback, I don't know until it's gone, so I always carry an extra bottle of water in case the Camelback runs out before I expect it to.
I haven't had the problem some people have described where the frame wouldn't stay popped in when full. Maybe mine is a new, improve version.

Water stays cool, the way that the pack sits on (off) your back is definetly a lot cooler and allows your back to breath. The bite valve is the smoothest I'v tried and does not leak. Lighter than previous hydrating packs I've used.
The straps keep it in place. The velcro strap ties for the two shoulder straps keep them out of the way.
Weaknesses:
Storage space is minimal (enough room for keys, a few energy bars is about all you can fit) even less if you fill the bladder to it max capacity. The biggest thing that bothers me is the 'Brillo' type breathable padding they have undreneath the meshing on the corners of the unit tend to rough up your jersey where the pads make contact on your back. The baffled bladder is harder to clean/dry because the baffle get is the way when cleaning/drying. Also needs the velcro strap ties for the two waist straps (I'm currently using the two rubber bands that came with the pack to control these straps from flopping around during a ride, but the rubber bands will eventually drie up and break off)

Bottom Line:
This is an ideal pack for hot days when going on 1-3 hr. rides. The platic X on the back really keeps your back a lot cooloer than standard packs that lay on your back flat (even the ones that have 'breathable padding). The jersey snagging/roughing may become an issue as I've used this pack on three rides and the jersey wear is very noticeable.
I wouldn't use another type pack on a ride after getting used to this pack (I typically don't do long rides 3+hrs. yet). Anyone who gets the hot-sweaty-under-the-pack-back and doesn't like that feeling should get one
Four chilli's for value (it was on sale reg. price $75.00) Couldn't give it five chillis for overall due to the jersey wear issue (storage space was known when purchasing so it didn't affect overall rating).

It looks cool. I like how the flap zips over the water opening. The removable waiste strap makes in more comfy for me. Also I like the the velcro that holds the excess strap. I dont know if it really make a difference with Aerodynamics for the average rider, but it is sleek looking. The way it is supposed to stay off you back is kinda cool but when the water is filled to the brim, it touches your back. And if you use ice, you back will get wet from condensation from that X brace, but not as much as if a backpack laid on your back. No heat basically. The reason why I got it was because I wanted a smaller backpack and carry only my water, keys, and wallet. I leave my tools, spare tube, pumps, etc in the Xterra. With the trails I ride, if something drastic happened to me with my bike, I can walk it back or ride it slowly.
Weaknesses:
The bladder is a pain to get out on a regular basis. When you have the bladder slam packed full of fluids, it doesnt lay on your back like it is supposed to. The X fram bows out and stays that way until you deplete your water.

This pack is (according to Camelbak) supposed to hold 2.1 litres of water and 1.6 litres of gear, so I figured a multi tool, pump, spare tube and a very small jacket would just about fit (only just over a litre according to my measuring jug). Well they do if you don't put any water in. The 2003 pack has a rigid plastic X frame that's supposed to hold the stuff away from your back to keep you cool, but when the bladder is full (even with no gear - just water) it becomes convex rather than concave and presses on your spine. It hurts! The more gear you add the more it hurts. Also refilling means removing the bladder and everything in the pack and then repacking it all. Ok at home but in an enduro race (which is why I bought it) it's just a(nother) pain.
To be honest if it wasn't for the frame I like almost everything else about the pack - I suspect refilling would be easier too. Maybe if you can get a 2002 model cheap then it would be a good buy.
As it is, it works with about 1.2 litres of water and a couple of bits and pieces just as the manufacturer intended. If you want to carry more than this then I suggest you get something else.

Weaknesses:
Hard to clean, not enough pockets/enclosures

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
This thing keeps me alive on the trail b/c I get dehydrated very quickly, and I fill this sucker up and am able to ride about 2-3 hours with it. I like it because it's light and I forget that I have it on my back. It even helps as padding when I fall off my bike and onto my back. :) I got a great deal on it and am happy with my purchase. I would suggest this water pak if you want to be able to hold lots of water and don't want to have something too heavy that may hinder your ride.

Strengths:
Great fit Holds enough fluids for a four-hour ride Holds pump, inner tube, tools, etc. inside away from mud Relatively light weight Camelback bite valve, simply the best for volume and no drips It didn't cost me anything!
Weaknesses:
Cleaning is difficult

Bottom Line:
While riding, its not even noticeable. Smooth outside so it doesn't catch on the low branches that you need to duck under. Holds enough stuff for up to a four hour continous ride.
I would buy another one, but I doubt I'll need to for many years.

Very comfortable, keeps water cool
Weaknesses:
Opening for resevoir too small
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
When I first wanted one of these my wife didn't know what it was for and said it look stupid. 6 months later she look stupid too. I love this product for the fact that it keeps my water very cool. Here in south Louisiana, the humidity alone will kill you. Holds plenty of water for an all day ride with enough storage to hold essentials. I use a folded metal coat hanger that I insert inside to hold open the bag for drying. The hanger that Camelbak makes doesn't seem to work for this product. The only thing that aggrevates me is trying to work the nozzel through that first little opening to throw the tube over your shoulder. Very durable product, A+ for that.

Lack of external rubber band for extra clothing Reservoir is hard to clean Tube cover is hard to be slide into shoulder strap

Bottom Line:
I have 2000 version It fits absolutly perfectly. I forget it when i'm on the trail.Strap and belt are positioned so well that it doesn't move when riding.
But this already nice product could be improved.
Internal space are well organized to hold all you need: a pump, tire patch, tool kit, wallet, cell phone, keys and spare tube.I would only like to have an external rubber band for clothing. This would be a plus.
Cleaning and drying the reservoir is a pain. The aperture is too small to put a hand inside.Due to its two pieces internal division you can't use dryer unless you cut it (I have recently seen instruction on their web site)
Slide the tube cover into the shoulder strap is a pain as well. It ofter remain inside the strap itself when you try to slide it out of the very small aperture to have it in the right position near your mouth.
Now I saw that on the 2002 Rocket these problem are solved. They've changed the reservoir (new one has a bigger aperture and can be easily cleand). The aperture on the shoulder strap is bigger so the tube can be easily positioned. Rubber band still missing but it's not a big problem.
I suggest this product specially to anyone who are sceptical on hydration systems. Its presence is unnoticeable when riding.
I give 4 for the problem above mentioned. 2002 will get 5 because of the upgrade

Well constructed, holds more than you need....its a Camelback!
Weaknesses:
Chest strap does not separate from harness if you want to remove and first model waist strap is thin. New model has remedied those issues

Bottom Line:
Purchased this product when it first came out, logging over 1,000 miles. Holds tools, spare tube for those who use tubes, zip ties, cell phone and winbreaker vest when needed. Though my bladder does protrude...barely, it works like a champ and if I needed another hydration pack, I would buy the same product without questions.

This pack is poorly engineered. Every time I try to put the water bladder back into the pouch I get annoyed how the top of the bladder sticks out about 3 inches. You think the people who design these things would design a product that fits.

Bottom Line:
Was a huge fan of the Lobo until I lost it when moving. Bought the Rocket cos not Lobos in stock and what a blessing that was. The Rocket is far more comfortable than the Lobo and the storage is about the same, just better organised. I have taken a few spills on jungle tracks and the Rocket has probably saved me from a few back injuries. If you like to disappear on your bike for three to four hours - get it. This is just a great product.
