Strengths:Best all around hydration pack/carrier I have used. I really like the 100 oz size and enough room for all my gear. Not to large and not to small. Zip pockets, places to store stuff like CO2 pumps netted area and is comfortable to boot.
Weaknesses:You might want a better place for a cell phone than a zip pocket.

Favorite Trail:Whichever trail I am riding
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $80.00
Strengths:I think I have the 08 model. This is my favorite pack for rides less than a half day. It carries all my stuff, but keeps me from taking the kitchen sink, since I probably would if I had more room. It looks good and is simple to get at the things I need most. The small bag is perfect for my tools and the mesh bag holds my light or other misc junk. This bag is tough too, but cleans up really well after a spin though the wash on gentle.
Weaknesses:It is impossible to stuff a full bladder into the bag if the main compartment is stuffed, though this seems typical for hydro packs. It would be easier if the zipper would go all the way down on the hydro compartment. It sits a bit weird on my back until it has settled in and the bladder is deflated somewhat, not a big deal though.
Similar Products Used:Camelback HAVOC, Dakine Apex, other misc hydro packs.
Bike Setup:Does it really matter, this is a bag?
Bottom Line:Great pack for short rides when you want more than a bottle (really all my rides). You may need more for a day out on the trail, but for half days it is perfect (for me).

Date Reviewed: November 2, 2008
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Sensible storage configuration, MP3 pocket, reasonable bulk/storage ratio
Weaknesses:no external fill, no fluid level indication
Similar Products Used:Camelbak Classic 3L/100oz, Blackburn Hydrapak
Bottom Line:I needed more storage than my Classic 3L offered, and the Mule is the same bladder in a larger pack, so it was a good choice. I like the Mp3 player pocket which is suitable for storing my cell phone more safely than smaller pakcs can. It is much bulkier than my old Camelbak but not unreasonably so. I do need to use the removable waist strap to keep the weight from shifting around too much though. Compartments are organized neatly into the bladder compartment, a full size internal compartment, half size outer compartment, half size internal organzied compartment, and a small size external pocket.

I have two main gripes with this pack compared to my old Camelbak. The first is lack of external fill. I have yet to figure out how to conveniently fill the bladder and get a full bladder fitted neatly into its compartment. For now I just try to remove extra stuff from the pack and 'pull' the bladder into its pocket, holding it from the bottom.

The second weakness of this pack is that I don't know how much water I have left. On the Camelbak classic I can sort of pinch the bottom of the pack and get a feel for how much fluid is in the bladder. The Mule's design keeps the bladder isolated in its compartment. This does annoy me on longer rides where I have to be careful of going through my water too quick.

Other than those two things the pack is a perfect size for long rides. Combined with two water bottles you can acheive a very respectable range and also bring along enough stuff to be prepared for that distance.

Strengths:Air director back panel really keeps the back dry. The waist straps can be easily removed which is nice if you plan on taking it walking/hiking. Reservoir has a lifetime warranty now and it looks awesome!
Weaknesses:None really.
Bottom Line:It really is an awesome pack. Big 100oz reservoir, plenty of room for your stuff. If you plan on carrying anything large like a camera or something I would recommend going with the H.A.W.G.

Duration Product Used:2 Years

Purchased At:I forgot
Strengths:Lots of space and plenty of water. I use for dirt and road and serves me well. Can carry what I need and have plenty of fluid to cope with the hot Arizona days... I would feel lost w/o it.
Quality workmanship throughout. Great, easy to use zippers, spacious compartments w/o being over sized.
Weaknesses:The only weakness I can see is in the bladder and learning to cope with "the taste" and cleaning out the tube. But I've read some real good suggestions, like clean and freeze and that has helped tremendously. Thinking of updating the bladder.
Similar Products Used:Another CamelBak of some sort, don't remember what it was..
Bike Setup:VooDoo Bizango XT stuff and other stuff too. I guess that helps the fluids taste even better.
Bottom Line:Excellent product. Dependable. A good buddy to have on my back during those rides.... short or long. I get a lot of use out of it.

Favorite Trail:Dalby Forest Red Route
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:Ebay Uk
Strengths:I got this pack on ebay on a whim after seeing it at 10mins to go, and only £20GBP (about 30/40 dollars). I already have two camelbaks, one very small one which i use for running and light walking, and a larger capacity Cross 20 which will carry 3L of water (same as the Mule) but has a main compartment that holds 20L of gear (same as the HAWG).

The MULE's main strength for me is its size. The pack is narrower than a full rucksack and lets your arms and shoulders move more easily when riding, and keeps your back cooler (esp with the air directional back). Despite its size, it can still hold a substantial amount of gear.

A big differentiating factor between this pack and a copy, is the attention to detail. All the zips are good quality and easy to grip while wearing gloves. The excess straps have velcro on them to wrap them up. The clips are strong, and all the stitching is excellent. A great innovation though is the flourescent yellow interior to the tool pockets which makes finding the tool you require much easier than if it were black.

Regarding the water carrying credentials, Ive never had any problems with any of my camelbak bladders, but can see that they are prone (as any water carrying bladder will be) to damage if stressed.

The bag holds more than enough equipment for a couple of hours including tools, pump, inner tubes etc although only a lighter weight jacket will fit comfortably in the stuff pocket.
Weaknesses:The bag's main strength (narrow width) also means that if you really pack it full of stuff, it can be less stable when compared to a broader pack.
Similar Products Used:1.5L Small Camelbak, 3L Camelbak Cross 20, Water bottles
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Hi-Fi wearing 2.1" Panaracer XC Fire Pro kevlar bead tyres.
Bottom Line:Absolutely the best pack for short and medium rides. Anything longer, or that would require more clothing, i would be inclined to switch to my Camelbak Cross 20.

Strengths:Great hydration pack! Water stays cool for a good 3 to 4 hours. The M.U.L.E. 06' has enough storage space for a pump, digital camera, tubes, tools, Powerbars etc. It's perfect for a day of bike-riding or hiking. The ventilation system is ideal and it provides airflow through your back as you chug along the trails. It does get a bit on the heavy side when filled with water and gear but for a work-out buff like myself, I can handle it. I recommend the M.U.L.E. 06'. It's a solid investment.

Strengths:Big name brand, well backed up by warranty. Carries lots of gear. 3 litres of water in bladder. Well made. Easy to ride/live with.
Weaknesses:None really, I havn't had any problems at all with the Mule.
Similar Products Used:Lots of "ordinary" backpacks not designed for cycling.
Bike Setup:Tricked out VT-2.
Bottom Line:I purchased this Camelback Mule after trying out a friends one for a day. I Was very impressed with the carrying capacity, and the comfort of the product.

When i'm wearing the Mule, I forget it's on my back. Granted, it does make me sweat a little more in the very hot Australian summer heat, but any backpack would.

I love the way you can increase the capacity by unzipping the front compartment to give a lot more room for gear.

The bladder has been easy to use, easy to flush out and clean, and carries enough water/fluid for long rides on and off road.

I have crashed and landed on it in the bush, it felt like I landed on a pillow, and certainly helped to cushion the impact of the landing. :)

So far, there has been no damage to it, the stitching and zippers are all intact and work flawlessly.

The Mule doesn't make me feel unbalanced in technical sections, as I said, I forget that i'm wearing it.

On the road, it stops the rooster tail of water from the back wheel hitting me in the back when I sometimes get caught out in a storm.

I can carry an enormous amount of gear in it, and have used it for overnight touring/camping in the Australian alpine region. It doubles as a nice pillow for sleeping on at night.

The adjustability of the straps, the padding, and the general fit and feel are all first-class.

I'm very happy to recommend it as a great way to carry your gear and water to anyone who asks me about it.

I would definitely buy another one if this one ever wears out.

Strengths:Carries more water than three water bottles PLUS any tools, rain gear, energy bars, keys, wallet, etc. you could reasonably need. And you don't have to bend over to get it. Anti-microbial reservoir coating works well. Valve lock prevents leaks from valve (as long as you remember to use it...). Reasonably comfortable, considering what it is - chest, sternum, and shoulder straps provide mucho adjustability. Great customer service - they stand behind their product.
Weaknesses:Bladder is somewhat susceptible to punctures - beware. You'll be temtped to bring more tools/gear/water than you may need.
Similar Products Used:2 Hydrapaks (both a back mounted version and a hip/fannypack style)
Bike Setup:A frame, with two wheels, two pedals, some gears, and some other stuff.
Bottom Line:This is a righteous hydration pack. I must admit I was a little reluctant to cave in and buy from an industry dominator like Camelbak, but after the somewhat lackluster performance of my previous two packs by Hydrapak and the good sponsorship deal I was getting on this pack, I figured I'd give them a shot. I was glad I did. I used the pack primarily this past summer on my cross country (4000 miles) tour, and it performed well. It enabled me to carry adequate water and gear for long days in the saddle, and it wasn't terribly uncomfortable, even during hot days.

Lately, I've also been using the reservoir slipped inside one of the pockets of my messenger bag for my commute, which has worked well. HOWEVER, I think it also resulted in the reservoir developing a small hole (as I shortly thereafter discovered as my back and everthing in my bag became soaking wet). But I got in touch with Camelbak customer service, and they provided me with a warranty replacement, at no charge. They even included the valve-lock (though I had to request this because the replacement didn't come with one). Since then I've been more careful (I use a plastic bag to insulate and protect the reservoir), and I haven't had any more problems.

Essentially, this is a great bag that is up for anything. It performs well on the trail as well. I now see that there is a reason Camelbak is the industry leader.

The pack is super rugged, i've crashed a few times on it, protects back very well. Holds enough water for the day, I rarely fill all the way, but it's nice to have the capacity if needed. It also has enough room for a windbreaker, pump, tube, tools, cellphone, discman and maybe even a skinny tupperware with sandwiches. If ever you need to carry more, you can take the bladder out of the mule, and stick it in a bigger back pack. Perfect product.

Bottom Line:This is a great pack for 2-3 hour rides. It holds everything you need, plus has plenty of nifty pockets to store things so they don't go flying all over the place. I like the 3L bladder which means I don't have to use the old Camelbak (2L) plus water bottles which was my previous set-up. I generally carry my pump, spare tubes, multi-tool, first aid kit, keys, phone and wallet, windproof vest, CD player (for road riding) and anything else I might think of. The only problem I've found so far is that the pack feels round when the bladder is completely full. A minor inconvenience really as it feels fine after I've been drinking.

The new model holds almost twice as much as the old model, or at least it seems that way. The two outer pockets are much bigger than the old model and the mesh pockets on the inside are great for holding tools and a cellphone.

I really like the new back panel that allows the air to flow across your back. The old style was just flat against you. The Sternum Strap also helps keep the pack in place which is nice.

Bottom line, get this pack. It is a really good size not too large like some of the others.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $70.00
Purchased At:The Bicycle Planet
Strengths:Strong durable material has yet to tear, Good construction and weight distribution feels like it was built for a mt. biker. Decent cargo storage for shot trips, New bladder design makes it easy to clean and the new bladder material makes clean less frequent due to antimicrobale material. Keeps water cool for about 2 to 3 hours with out ice add ice for up to 4 to 5 hours of cool water :)
Weaknesses:Cargo space is decent for about two to three hours but after that get a Hawg. Can't fit my rain gear and lighting system at the same time. I always find myself playing musical gear what to leave and what to take. Don't like loading the blader into the back and playing stuff it without spill. Make sure you remove all the air in the system before you try to load it or you will leak. Taking all your gear out of the main compartment and then replacing is a hassle this is where musical gear starts you can never get all of it back in. The air panels don't work when it's full.
Similar Products Used:Camelback Blowfish, Mule ,Hawg and the standard bottle and cage.
Bike Setup:Specialized Stumpy with plenty of goodies
Bottom Line:I know I have listed allot of weaknesses but the one thing this sytem has in it's favor is time. Yes time I have used it for close to two years and it has never failed me. This is the one thing I'll always have with me when I go solo. It carries all the gear I need for short distance and it is vastly superior to a bottle and cage which can foul in less than an hour in hot weather. I have beaten the s&!t out of this thing and it still works as good as the day I bought it. The only thing I don't like is the volume of gear it can hold sometimes mostly in the fall I find myself either cold because I can't fit my cool weather gear or dangerously blind because I couldn't fit my lighting system. I wish it was only a small ammount bigger so I could go further. If your still using a water bottle time to grow up this is the way to go bottles go warm, get ejected off your bike and lost, and just can't hold enough water and the only way to extend your ride is to buy more water or put on a second cage. Forget that get a Camelback and say goodbye to bottles for good. Every Mt. biker needs one of these. If you ride short distance and carry only a small amount of gear get a Mule you can't go wrong. If you ride further distance get a Hawg the extra room and dual bladder carrying abilty is thes best way to go for serious distance but for a two hour trip this is the best one for ya! PEACE.

Strengths:-looks great
-comfortable to wear--doesn't move around while you're riding (as long as you use the chest strap)
excellent quality--I don't see it falling apart anytime soon
Weaknesses:when the bladder is full, it drastically limits the amount of storage space because it pushes up against the big pocket. But the m.u.l.e still has enough space for essential tools, mini-pump, snack, and wallet
Similar Products Used:camelbak cloudwalker (70 oz), classic (50 oz)
Bottom Line:I loved my cloudwalker, but 70 oz's just wasn't enough anymore. My classic is both too small and doesn't hold enough water. I like the m.u.l.e because it seems to have just enough room for the stuff that i carry on the trails (spare tube, powerbars, goo, patch kit, chain breaker, allen wrenches, pump, wallet, keys, glasses...other misc. stuff). It's perfect for the 2-4 hour rides that i do. I do have to warn though that when i first bought it, i thought that the big pocket would be able to hold more items than it does. That's because when the bladder is full, it really restricts, what you can hold.

Bike Setup:2002 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo with a 2003 Rock Shox Pilot XC fork, pretty good XC bike
Bottom Line:The Camelbak M.U.L.E. is a very good hydration pack to have. If you are a long distance rider, it holds plenty of water. If you carry a lot of stuff with you, this is a great hydration pack. However, if you care about getting sweaty on a bike ride, and don't want to get sweaty (which is pretty inevitable), dont get this hydration pack, because even though it holds a lot of water and supplies, it gets very hot very quickly. Also, if you just want a regular hydration pack, do not get this pack, because you can get one more suited for you for much less money. I love mine because I think that a few sweaty T-shirts and 80 dollars is a small price to pay for all that this pack gives you.

Strengths:Wide mouth opening/cap (Omega Reservoir), Easy to clean, plenty of storage, all the straps keep you locked in to the cockpit very securely(I speared my bak with a large tree branch. Pulled me out of my clips, but it didn't hurt my Mule!)Good quality, very durable (I, along with other riders I Know, have landed flat on there baks and we've never busted, popped, or punctured one), Great customer service!
Weaknesses:Expensive (but, you get what you pay for). To big for small rides(for me).
Similar Products Used:Camelbak Rogue (for shorted trips), water bottle (never again).
Bike Setup:No Bottles, Ever!
Bottom Line:First of all, I think you'd have to be a fool (or poor, these things are expensive!) not to have some sort of hydration pack. Water bottles are dangerous (try taking a drink from a bottle while on single track)!
Ok, that said, I really love my ass, I mean Mule. But,
it did develop a leaking cap after several months, and I started having to get the lid at that perfect spot of tightness for it not to leak. I e-mailed Camelbak just to tell them that they should modify the cap (for future customers) so it wouldn’t leak so easy (I was not expecting a reply), and the next day they sent me an email saying a few caps have come through production that were a tad too small (plus, they Had modified the new caps). In short, I had a new cap (free) in my mail box 2 days later. Great customer service! Thanks Nissa!
If this Bak is more/less storage than you need, your sure to find another size Camelbak to fit your needs.
I will only put Camelbaks on this Back!

Strengths:Nice size and arrangement of pockets for storage without feeling bulky.
Weaknesses:The more h2o in the bladder, the rounder the pack gets. The 'air director' pads on the back cease to have any effect. Good idea in theory, but the 'air directors' need to be placed differently on the pack surface.
Bottom Line:Still consider it a great pack for it's features/storage/size, but if I can do with less storage capacity, then I'd opt for the Lobo.

Strengths:Design, compartments, pockets - the whole product as is.
Lots of places to put your things - as long as they arent bulky.
Weaknesses:Leakage! The reservoir opening leaks no matter what I do. Aparatly other users here in Sweden have the same problem.
The external pockets have a minor designflaw in my opinion.
Similar Products Used:Cheapo ripoffs, different water solutions
Bike Setup:Scott Comp Racing 02
Bottom Line:The design of the MULE is excellent. As a prior reviewer said, a lot of thought went into this product. Basicly, this is as good as it gets.
I agree with every positive review that has been posted on the MULE. It rocks!

But, my reservoir is leaking, other reviewers here have posted that theirs leak as well and other users here in Sweden have the same problem. It doesn´t matter how hard you tighten the screwcap, it still leaks.

It seems to be some problem with the o-ring that is supposed to seal the opening.

Also, the pockets have a designflaw in my opinion. Every pocket starts from the bottom and travels upwards, wich creates a narrow space thet cant be used, or that can be used but interferes with other compartments. A minor change in design that stacked the compartments on each other would be great.

5 for value - this is as good as it gets - but an overall 2 because of the leakage problem.

Weaknesses:Leaks on the big opening no matter how tight I close it, no problem unless you lay down the pack and forget about it then look out everything gets soaked, also the bite valve is a bit small and it takes too much suck to get hydrated, might have to go to the larger valve
Bottom Line:Dissapointed on the leaks but better leaking than carrying and loosing water bottles on the trail. Also have to take stuff out of the big zippered campartment to get the full 100 oz bladder into the pack, too tight a fit, but better to tight than a flopper, looks like alot of thought went into the design of the pack sadly the leaking is just not acceptable

Bottom Line:Overall I'm very happy with my MULE. This is last year's model. I couldn't live without a hydration pack now that I own one. Keeps me well hydrated and don't need to stop to drink, just keep chugging along. Big Bite Valve is great, don't know how others are, but this one is very good. I've noticed a small leak at the top of my reservoir, but only leaks if I fill it up to the max, so I just keep it at @75% and all is well. Plenty of water for long rides.

Fits all my tools (pump, patches, tube, wrenches) but does not do well with bulky stuff like a jacket. Pack is narrow, jacket would go on the elastic ties outside.

Strengths:-Well oraganized

Weaknesses:-Bite valve needs to be broken worked hard to break in
-Pack is a little small for the resevoir
-Straps are a little chintzy
Similar Products Used:Water bottles
Bottom Line:This is a pretty good bag if your looking for something that can carry a lot of water. The water temperature stays stable for a good bit of time. In winter if you put in room temp. water it will stay that way, i.e. it won't freeze like water bottles.

The shoulder straps are very comfortable but I wish the waist and sternum straps were a little better built as they look a little narrow.

I really like the clamp that holds the tube in place on the shoulder strap which makes the bite valve easier to get to: nice touch. Be prepare to roll that bite valve between your fingers for a while though! The plastic apparently has "a very strong memory". it took me close to an hour to get the slit open.

Overall, I'd have to say that if you're looking for a pack with large water capacity and lots of space to store your tools then this is it.

Strengths:100oz that stays cold!! Can't beat that. Keeps stuff off my bike, which hinders performance. It feels like nothing on your back yet carries so much.
Weaknesses:(1) The stitching on the sternum strap pulled out mid-ride on day two of using it; there were a lousy three stitches in the seam--K-mart bags are stitched better--so I took it to a local luggage repair to get triple reinforced stitching. Still, it cost me almost nothing to do that and most of the seams were just fine. (2) Packing it takes some getting used to because if you fill up the bladder all the way it pretty much eliminates the usefulness of all but the front pocket, so I can't really fill it all the way, except in the summertime when I have no choice and less stuff to carry. (3) The warranty is only good for one year, compared to NorthFace, JanSport, or just about any other serious sports bag company which warranties their products for life even under the most extreme circumstances.
Similar Products Used:Water bottles, CourierWare (Cambridge Massachusetts) courier bag for riding around town and shopping (which I still use after 10+ years, carries literally anything, is damn near indestructable, and comes with a lifetime warranty and free repairs on ware and tear for life!), NorthFace mountain biker fanny pack (huge, but comfortable, another bag I totally depend on).
Bike Setup:Trek Cro-Moly, race geometry frame with race level components--my own creation
Bottom Line:Especially in the nasty, stickier than you can imagine, hard-to-breath humidity we get here in the Kanto area of Japan during summer I appreciate having a gigantic amount of ice cold fluid on my back. Once I got used to how to pack it, fixed up the stitching, and attached a cargo net--like the ones used on motor cycles--it really fulfilled my needs better than any other bag could for long distance mountain biking. Still, if I didn't modify it, I wouldn't like it so much.
