Favorite Trail:Skeggs Point
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:Performance Bike
Strengths:- good size and capacity
It has 100 oz reservoir and has good storage size.
Weaknesses:- algae grows easily
- no ventilation in the back
The pack sticks to my back when I sweat and becomes extremely uncomfortable.
Similar Products Used:Camelbak MULE and Blackburn Amazon which are all similar just different size.
Bike Setup:Dean Colonel, Dean TI bar, Dean TI post, Titec TI stem, XT drive train.
Bottom Line:This is for an older model of Blowfish. Maybe the newer version has improved on the back ventilation. I certainly hope so. After some research and now I am switching to Deuter Race Air X II. Deuter makes great packs. The back of the pack doesn't make direct contact to your back. It suspends over the back and there is a mesh. The design allows great air flow. Anyway, enough Camelbak for me. Besides it's over priced. I don't know if it's any better than those you can buy from Costco which costs less then $20.

Bottom Line:This is one heckuva pack. I wanted one pack that could do everything I wanted outdoors. Some packs were too small, some were too large, and some were just crappy. This pack does it all. It expands and collapses with a zipper, so I can take minimal stuff on trail rides or expand and pack more stuff for longer rides. If you only have cash for one pack, this is it! I haven't yet had to use the full volume, but it is awesome knowing it is there when fall rolls around and I'll be packing extra layers, etc. The water bladder system is very easy to use and carries plenty of water.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $70.00
Purchased At:REI
Strengths:Perfect size for a any ride or a day hike. Flexibility to expand. 3L reservoir. Bladder strength. Pocket organizers. Looks. Reflective hits. Comfort. Cheaper than other similar models.
Weaknesses:Pocket organizers - they seem a little too small and awkward, just not executed perfectly like the rest of the pack. Price-as all hydro packs.
Similar Products Used:Camelbak Classic.
Bike Setup:Jamis
Bottom Line:I debated for a really long time between several camelbak models and some North Face models. North Face turned out to have poorer reviews and to be overpriced, so it was down to the CB MULE or CB Blowfish. The MULE had great reviews but I was afraid it would be just too small. I not only wanted to use it for riding, but day hikes. The versatility of the Blowfish is why I love it. It is the same dimension as the MULE when closed, and is very comfortable, but also can be expanded to fit heavier loads. Still while being everything a hydro pack should be. The Blowfish is a sweet pack. The extra space is nice to have and the other features seem to work very well in conjunction with the rest of the pack. I would recommend it based strictly on the extra cargo room while still being a sleek bag. 4 chilis for value because its a hydro pack and all hydro packs are overpriced.

Strengths:1. Right choice for weekend warriors like me.
2. Strap ends on new model are tied, so they will not flop your body on high speed.
3. And yes, Camelbak reservoir is in package!
Weaknesses:1. no mech pocket (old model has it) to put there gloves, hat, glasses on the fly
2. same non waterproff fabric, so all you stuff will be wet in the rain
3. reflective loops on shoulders some times hook helmet buckle when you look round in the traffic or riding in the group (that is terrible, so I cut them off.

Bottom Line:this pack is sick. the picture at the top does not do it justice. i had an old camelbak mule and it just got to the point where i couldn't fit all the stuff i needed in it. with the expandable pockets i can bring as much or as little as i want with me. the mesh back keeps you very cool. doesnt bounce around at all, and it sits higher up on your back so it doesn't feel like its about to fall off. this pack can be a little pricy but if you look around you can find it for cheap.

Airflow is good through the back and the reservoir does not leak OR leave its condensation on my back. The reservoir area is insulated too so my water stays cool even without ice. Strengths:Cargo capacity, bite valve technology, hydration capacity, and mutiple configurations for the hydration tube.
Weaknesses:Small buckles and belts. The straps are sewn onto the pack making replacement impossible. Small zippers and grab loops. Lack of color choice.
Similar Products Used:All sorts of hydration packs
Bike Setup:Ellsworth Truth
Bottom Line:I don't understand why hydration packs in general cost more than $25.00. I ended up swapping out a few parts from my old Hydration pack, including the velcro hold down for the hydration tube. This pack has odd ergonomics. All storage seems to be at the bottom of the pack. I only carry the essentials, but the result is some pack bulge at the bottom and a low riding pack.

Strengths:Bulletproof construction! holds a lot of water. plenty of cargo space, but not so much that you bring too much cr@p with you. mesh lower pocket is secure- shiz rarely falls out. reservoir stays fresh and does not taste like plastic. bite valve does not leak, loops and buckle bits make customized hose routing easy. high-qual zippers and buckles never seize or break. makes a great back/spine protector for endos!
Weaknesses:not really any that i have experienced. could be a tad heavy if you're a hardcore xc person, but that's not my bag baby, so it's my bag, baby.

Bottom Line:this thing has been everywhere with me...every type of mountain biking known to man, hiking, and spin classes. it has held up to many crashes over the last 3+ years. one of the shoulder straps just got half way ripped near the top of the pack. it was my fault...a violent crash where i landed on my back. i never expected this pack to last as long as it has...and the funny thing is, even badly damaged, i can still use it until i get another one and it can function as a spare. i'll never buy any thing else...i'm just waiting for santa to bring me a new one for christmas! the 100 oz. bladder and all the extra cargo space is a must...you don't always fill it all up, but it's there when you need it...and it's really not much bigger or heavier than the next smallest model...thoughfully designed and very durable.

Bottom Line:I think we all agree this product is great.

But I have some comments for anyone who owns one or wants to buy one:

(1) Camelbak's customer service is great. I had a leaky lid -- many reviews mentioned this. I wrote to Camelbak and they sent me a new lid free of charge. The new lid has not leaked!

(2) To remove the plastic taste from the bladder, fill it with 2 liters of Coca-Cola (not diet). Get all the air out so the coke is touching the entire surface, including the hose. Let it sit 24-48 hours. Wash it out. Fill with water. Much better.

(3) I have had several nasty crashes where the pack actually saved me from some injuries. Each time I thought the bladder would rupture, but it never does.

(4) I like this product so much I bought one for each of my two brothers-in-law this Christmas. (Hope they don't read this)!

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:SierraTradingPost.com
Strengths:Holds lots of water, keeps it cool for reasonable amount of time, protection for back when you crash badly
Weaknesses:None yet, although I am a bit suspicious about the durability of the thin nylon - will find out over time. In its defense, it did survive a bad crash on its maiden ride with barely a scratch
Similar Products Used:Water bottles only. The Blowfish is definitely more convenient
Bottom Line:I just used the Blowfish out on its maiden vayage today - and must say it survived a very bad crash with flying colors. An added benefit was that the Blowfish provided cushioning for my back during the fall.

I am also very impressed with the overall design. Like for example the little hook they provide in the pack where you put in the omega reservoir so that the reservoir does not slide down when you do jumps and drops on the bike - very convenient. Another nice feature is that the sealing cap for the reservoir is a captive design, so that the cap does not fall down on the floor and get dirty when you are fiddling with the reservoir.

And compared to my water bottles, the Blowfish really does keep the water cool for a longer time. The main storage compartment is expandable so it adjust to suite your length of ride. The other smaller compartment has a key holder for car keys - which I like a lot.

On the negative side, their claim of the ventilated back panel is a little dubious - I did not feel any air moving over my back (may be I need to ride faster, I dunno). Since I have only used it for one ride so far, I will reserve judgement on long term durability for now. Although as I said earlier, it did just fine after a bad crash today. Will report back in a year and let y'all know.

Right now, I give a five for value - SierraTradingpost has a screaming deal on the 2002 models. The only difference between those and the newer 2003 models is the color choices, functionality remains the same. And I also give five ratings over all - so far CamelBak delivered on all their claims for features and convenience.

Price Paid: $90.00
Purchased At:Cheltenham Cycles
Strengths:Adjustable size (important if, like me, you only want to buy one of these things!), huge water capacity and very tough construction. Also, it really does keep the water cold for 5 hours, especially if you bung in half a dozen ice cubes!
Weaknesses:That oh so refreshing plastic flavour... (it does fade) and a tendency to make your back warm.
Similar Products Used:only bottles, although a freind of mine did suggest combining a cheap rucksack, a bin bag, some hosepipe and a homebrew beer kit...
Bike Setup:LRS/Merida frame, mx pro eta fork, deore / xt gubbins, nice layback prodigy seat post, easton flat bars, onza bar ends, non-disc lx/mammoth wheels (*dreams of upgrades...*) & tioga factory xc tyres (surprisingly good for fit & forget all purpose tyres)
Bottom Line:Top piece of kit for riders who want to carry a fair amount of supplies on long (or short for that matter) trips. I can't compare within the range, but it suits me fine. I can pack a shock pump, mini pump, tools (lots!), first aid kit, spare tube, food and an outer layer without expanding it. I'd buy another if this one got nicked, I can't imagine it dying! Top tip picked up from this site - keep the bladder in the freezer between rides.

I shopped around and found that the best price wasn't on the net but from Cheltenham Cycles who did me a good deal (so good I've just got to give them a plug!).

Bottom Line:I have had this unit for more than 2 years and a lot of miles. It has survived single track in the Pyrenees, most of New England, the NYC metro area and a lot of endos. And no problems. May be time for a new bladder. Large, locking bite valve keeps from leaking. I even have repaired the bladder with a park tire patch, a hear ago and it's still working!

In the Pyrenees my Blowfish became the mule in carrying people's baguettes, cheese and other lunchables. This is a great hydration system for day trips and beyond. I have definately gotten my money's worth from this camelbak.

Weaknesses:Price, depending on where you buy it.
Similar Products Used:Watter bottles
Bottom Line:With an expanding pocket, the Blowfish holds a good amount of gear for a day trip; it isn't too small or too large. At first, I was hesitant, thinking the bag would look too large on someone like myself with a short torso. But it's about the size of a regular backpack. Even on a warm day, I barely notice it on my back--it's that comfortable. 100mL has been more than enough water to keep me hydrated for my urban SF rides. The price for a Camelbak is a bit steep, but in the end, it is WELL worth it.

The expandable pack here is so inventive, now I can carry a light lunch, and after eating I don't have to deal with this huge empty thing on my back. The arm straps are great (although I've yet to meet someone who uses the stupid chest clip... I think its useless on a small pack like this) The pads on the back really add comfort even when pack is busting because its so full. Bottom Line:Great pack. Holds everything you could possibly need, and then it expands.

Idea for you all: the day I bought it I stuck a spare vehicle key on the lanyard and left it there, and I've got to say, I've been awfully far from home (and a telephone) more than once when that five second idea saved me hours and hours and hours.

It got stuck in the washing machine spindle. Friction ground small holes in the main cargo pocket and the small outer pocket, but the ripstop did its job, and the damage has not spread. Gets a big thumbs up for durability.

My bladder leaks if I don't screw it down REALLY tight. The bite valve rocks. The back panels do a great job allowing a bit of airflow.

Buy one. You won't be sorry.

Strengths:expandability of main pouch, muliple compartments, durable construction, compression straps on the sides for when you have a big load, the key chain clip inside the main pouch is a great little feature and ensures you don't fling your keys into the bushes when you're trying to find your tire levers. This is my own preference, but when you aren't carrying anything more than water and tools, the pack compresses down to comfortable small size (even empty the MULE seems big to me), plenty o'reservoir volume (3L)
Weaknesses:nothing
Similar Products Used:bottles
Bottom Line:Great product. It's one of those items I never knew that I was missing till I bought one. If you only ride short rides, a waterpack probably isn't really necessary, but if you ride longer than an hour in summer weather, more water is a good thing!
The blowfish itself is great and I think it's probably one of the best packs out there; it's a generous size but isn't huge like the mule, so it's less noticable on my back, it carries 3liters which is more than some packs (and really necessary on 95 degreee summer days), and it's more reasonably priced than some of the other bags (like the mule). (BTW, I bought it at Jensonusa.com for significantly less than retail at my LBS).
I think for epic rides a bigger pack might be needed, but for the mere mortal, the blowfish is plenty.

Final thought: the air-channel they advertise on the padding is BO-O-O-GUS!!

I'm not as thrilled with the layout of the new version, but it may be a case where I would come to appreciate the new features if I used one. I see that the key strap has returned. And I do like the new bladder and bite valve, enough so to upgrade my older pack.

Bike Setup:Kona stinky, trek 4900 for xc, radio flyer wagon with fat tires.
Bottom Line:I used to think that these things looked heavy and stupid like you were carrying your school books or something. As the summer got hotter (I live in Houston, TX) I was running out of water quickly. I have two bottle holders on my Trek but my Kona only has one. When I saw the new bladder in the blowfish with the large opening I started to imagine that thing full of ice water and could not resist the urge to try it out. I'm very glad I did. I put three ice trays of ice in the thing and fill it up completely full of water and I have enough ice cold water to last 4 hours or more of rough terrain in 90 degree plus weather. It does not feel as heavy as I thought it would and the strap system keeps it planted firmly and comfortably on your back. I jump, drop, and ride just as good as before.

This thing is tough as hell too. I endoed one day after landing wrong and landed squarely on the pack. Even though it was completely full of water and ice it did not rupture. I am 6'1" and over 200 lbs!!! I am very impressed with the quality and comfort of this product!!! Definitely worth every penny!

Strengths:Storage capacity, high build quality, Omega reservoir.
Weaknesses:Expensive. I have the new 2002 Blowfish, which is redesigned over the old one, and it was $85. Wish it was around $70 or $75.
Similar Products Used:Camelbak Lobo. Not big enough to fit my growing needs once I started buying tools to carry with me.
Bike Setup:2000 Gary Fisher Tassajara.
Bottom Line:Wow, what a great Camelbak, this is the best one ever. I have no regrets about buying this thing once I looked it over really well. It's made from high-quality materials. You can tell this thing is built to last, and it should, considering that Camelbak charges a good amount for their products. The back padding is thick and is designed to let air get between your back and the pack so you don't sweat as much. The sternum and waist straps help keep the load close to your body. With my old Lobo, when I would jump my bike, the pack would go flying up and hit me in the back of the head, throwing me off balance. I'm confident the Blowfish will keep itself in place. I was able to fit inside of it: an Alien DX multitool, a small pair of Vise-Grips, a Crank Bros. alloy aluminum tire pump, Crank Bros. speed lever, a spare tube, a Leatherman multitool, zip-ties, a digital camera, cell phone, Gu gels, L.L. Bean fleece pullover, Adidas wind pants, car keys, bottle of chain lube, and some medical supplies, with the reservoir half full and the compartment expanded. I had to have the reservoir half full because the clothes take up a lot of room. But I wanted to make sure they fit, because on those mornings when it's too cold to wear shorts until you get warmed up, but once you warm up you want to take your pullover and wind pants off, you have to put them somewhere, and with my Lobo I ran out of room and had to tie the pants around my waist, etc. It didn't work. I swore to get a bigger Camelbak. This thing holds a lot of stuff, you'll be a rolling tool truck with the Blowfish. I used to carry little or nothing with me when I rode, but now I want to get into more extended rides that take me miles and miles from the truck, so I want security and the ability to carry a lot of stuff. If you bought a Camelbak already and have filled it up and would like more room to carry things like a washcloth for your face, a sandwich, more tools, a digital camera with a padded case, etc, get the 2002 Blowfish. The old Blowfish can be had for about $55 or $60, but get the 2002, it's nice. I felt guilty about getting it for $85, but once it came in and I looked it over, I was happy. It also has 2 elastic straps on the shoulder straps for you to put a walkie talkie. On my old Lobo I thought about sewing a strap on the back strap to put a walkie talkie, but on the BlowFish, it's taken care of. Also, the reservoir is easily accessed through a Velcro top. There's no unzipping to get the reservoir out, you just undo the zelco and yank the whole thing out. I forgot to mention that the Omega reservoir is a huge improvement over the old style. I had the o-ring leak on my old screw-top style reservoir. The Omega has a hard plastic handle for you to hold while you fill it up with 100oz. of water, and a notch to hang the thing from. You can fit your hand in there and scrub it all out, instead of putting a mild bleach solution in there and sloshing it around and letting it sit for a while before rinsing it out like with the old reservoir. You can put a fistful of ice cubes in it at once instead of feeding one at a time through the narrow hole that the old stlye reservior has. Basicaly the Omega reservoir will save you precious minutes when you are running late to meet your friends at the trails and you still haven't filled up your Camelbak yet. The cap on the Omega has a big thick o-ring and it feels nice and tight when you screw the lid on, so I'm sure I won't have a leak problem any more. I would feel confident drop-kicking this thing as hard as I could and it wouldn't bust. I'm sure I could toss it up in the air and hit it with a bat on the way down and it wouldn't bust. So you don't have to worry about crashing hard and falling on the Camelbak and the bladder going "sploosh!" The Omega reservoir even has ounce increments going up the reservoir, so you know how much water you've put in there, and how much you've drank. The Blowfish is really not much heavier than the Camelbak I was using, because it was loaded to the brim and about to explode anyway. If you want to save weight, don't fill it all the way up to 100oz., that's a lot of water, and water is heavy, just put about 50 or 60oz. in there. I never used the whole reservoir on a ride with my Lobo and it was only 70 oz. I'm thinking about putting one of those refreezeable blue ice paks that you put in lunch boxes next to the reservoir in addition to ice to keep it super cold, or to keep a sandwich or washcloth or canned drink cold. There's that much extra room in this thing. The sternum strap and waist strap really help take the weight off your shoulders and back. It doesn't shift around at all once you get it adjusted. All in all, the best Camelbak ever.

That is all without UNzipping the 'BlowFish' compartment.
Weaknesses:Mine came with the standard bladder. Some of the other models come with the 'OMEGA' bladder. That model permits you to put your entire hand inside of the bladder for cleaning, and filling , and the such. You can still purchase it after the fact and put into the pack.

Bottom Line:Never thought I would ever actually use 100 oz of water. But I almost always do. I guess I was always trying to conserve water, but not anymore.

The idea is fantastic. The bladder works well to protect your back in crashes. The water always tastes great, dirt free, and stays cold for hours even without ice cubes.

I used to think that other riders looked a little goofy with their little girl backpacks. But not anymore. Do your body a favor, and buy one today. The blowfish works great for me. It has an expansion zipper that allows you to double up the storage space when you need it, and keep the pack slim when you don't. I highly recommend it.

Weaknesses:The only thing I wished it had was a larger chest strap. While I put a new clip on it and fixed it to fit, the original one was rather tight.

Bottom Line:GO OUT AND BUY THIS PACK. Besides mountainbiking, I use mine for just about everything. I'm an avid hunter, camper, hiker, biker, and motocross fanatic and the blowfish is perfect in every way. Recently, I went to the U.S. Open golf tourney here in town. It was mid 90's temperatures and very humid. People were dropping like flies from dehydration and dizziness. (you try standing in the sun for 14 hours!) I loaded up the essentials and filled the bladder halfway, froze it and then filled the rest with water when I left the next morning. I was there from 6 a.m. until about 8 that night. My water was cold throughout the entire day and I had ample supply. I figured out that I paid for my pack by not paying 4 bucks a waterbottle. Anybody who maintains an active lifestyle should purchase one. I didn't jump on the bandwagon until last year. Now i'm thinking I was stupid to not have gotten on it sooner. It really is worth it.

Bottom Line:I love it. I swapped the tube and mouthpiece with my camelback original (straight bite-piece and longer tube) and it is now perfect. With the stock tube I was always pulling to get it to my mouth, then trying to figure which side to drink on - not cool one-handed on the long downhills. It's made it through the washer several times without any fraying, and makes a great cushion when you fly off the back of your bike. It holds everything I need (multi-tool, 1st aid kit, CD player in the mesh pocket, space blanket, etc.) plus all the stuff my friend has to tie onto his MULE.
Kinda pricey, but everything is nowadays. I've only fully drained it on one day-ride, and that was a nasty 6hr trek on Poison Spider Mesa in 90+ degree weather. It leaves a really cool tan-line if you go topless too ;^)>

Don't like the reservoir screw-on cap as the threaded mouthpiece for the bag has "warped", making it very difficult to get the lid screwed on with a good seal. Haven't left the thing in a hot car -- it came that way. Maybe mine's a bad one. The stabilizing straps (chest & waist) are useful but could be a bit larger. Strengths:This is the 2001 Camelbak blowfish. Redesigned to allow any rider the room, H2O, and supplies needed for all types of conditions and trips. The new bite valve has a flowlock switch plus it is positioned a hell of alot better than on older valves. The lock is great because it will not allow water to leak when transporting it or to stop that annoying drip after just drinking. LOTS of room, man this thing can hold a ton of gear! There is even room (when expanded) for a foldable tire.
Weaknesses:The blowfish although it does come with two padded straps and two restraint straps, i would of like to see the straps more padded and stronger, just in case of a heavier load capacity.
Similar Products Used:I have run the mill with back hydration packs and this seems (so far) to be my final choice. The list starts way back when i bought, for 35 bucks, the small 40 ounce original camelbak. Boy, did that thing suck. So then i went on to a Schwinn Hydrapack, that was another mistake. My bladder buster and my tongue got pinched in that crappy plastic valve. It's amazing to watch the market change and the products become better and better. It's hard to imagine anything getting any stronger and lighter.
Bike Setup:Well, i wwork at a bike shop so i have been blesses to ride a nice rig, being only 17 i have not a whole lot of time to be saving up for bikes. Anyway, 1998 Schwinn Homegrown frame(red bass boat), 2000 SID xc, XTR der.s, XT crank and shifters(yes i was trapped into 9 speed), Avid Archrival 50 brakes,Rolf Dolomite wheels, Continental tires(i have a few combinations),Titec hellbent, titec stem, titec seat post, titec Carbon 100 barends, fi`zi:k nisene saddle ti rails, time ATAC pedals, yeti grips, sigma copmuter, and whole lotta love!
Bottom Line:I knew i needed a new hydrapack, i checked the market, i looked at brands like Platypus, blackburn, schwinn, and gt; and i felt that camelbak made a pack for the money and for the rider this time. This pack is for someone who drinks alot (of water), rides long to short trips, carries alot of stuff, and loves quality.

Price Paid: $70.00

Strengths:Overall this in an excellent hydration system. There is a 100oz bladder that will hold warm or cold liguid and plenty of extra space for tools, pumps, and other items. The shoulder straps are nicely padded and fully adjustable. There are also fully adjustable cross straps that fit across your chest and stomach to keep everything tight.
Weaknesses:None really. I guess one could complain about the price but you get what you pay for. You want something decent you are going to pay for it, so deal with it.
Bike Setup:Schwinn Moab 1
Bottom Line:Bottom line is this, you want something that can carry alot of water and still have room for gear but not interfere with your ride? Buy the Blowfish. It is extremely well built and balanced. The shoulder straps are padded and fully adjustable for that "perfect fit". I love this thing.

Duration Product Used:1 Year

Purchased At:Universalcycles.com
Bottom Line:This is an outsanding product all-around.

The quality is excellent -I use mine EVERY DAY as a commuter and weekend recreational rider and it has survived crashes, being oversuffed (sometimes brutally!) and several cycles in the washing machine. The bag itself, zippers and bladder are all still in great shape.

The design is very good - the bag does not move on your back even when YOU are getting jolted around. There is plenty of room for what you'll need on a day's ride - and the expandability will come in handy more often than you think! The small outside zippered compartment is a nice touch for small or important (i.e. keys & wallet)items that might get lost in the main part of the bag.

Lots of H2O - The 100oz bladder is easily filled and does not leak (even after a few hard landings). The bite valve delivers a good stream of water and there is no nasty taste imparted by the bladder materials. I live in an area where "Hydrate or Die" is a reality for much of the year and being able to carry this amount of fluid is a real blessing.

The only problem that I have had with this pack is that the sternum strap has a habit of disengaging from one or the other of the shoulder straps. This is a little annoying, but it's a 30-second fix - and when it happens it has little effect on stability of the pack.

Finally, I can heartily say that you will not be sorry for purchasing the Blowfish, The only reason to buy a different pack is that you don't need this much room.

Strengths:It holds a lotta water, and a hydration system like this is definitely a good idea. It keeps you drinkin' - plain and simple.
Weaknesses:The Blowfish is held together with a few thin threads. It completely fell apart on me.
The 6 dollar replacement valve (that you'll need) is outrageous.
Similar Products Used:bottles - no other hydration systems
Bike Setup:Litespeed Obed
Bottom Line:Most of the stellar reviews for this product have 2 things in common. 1) "I've been using the product for about a month now..." and 2) "You can't beat a hydration system..."

Well, # 2 is correct. Hydration systems rock, esp if yer riding someplace hot were sustaining H2O levels is key. But is this the best hydration system out there? Personally, I think it's not - I think it sucks. And I've had it for 2 years now.

What all the people reviewing this product after a short period of use are missing is the products durability. Or better put, it's lack of durability. Mine started falling apart after about 2 months of relatively hard but certainly not unreasonable use. This is kinda unexceptable for most riders I would think... it's rough when you find out your wallet, spare tube, or whatever fell out through an unseen tear in the stiching of your Blowfish. Be warned.

Also, the mouthpieces fall off the things constantly, or just start leaking for unexplained reasons. At 6 bucks a pop to replace the penny sized pieces of rubber that I'm sure they mass produce by the ton... it's a complete rip off.

In conclusion:
Hydration systems: YES
Camelbak Blowfish: NO WAY
other Camelbak model: MAYBE

I'd suggest to keep it simple, use the hydration system for water, not as a backpack. If you need the storage options though, make sure what you buy looks rugged.

Peace
-Slain

Strengths:I would have to say the capacity. It can hold 100 oz. of H20 plus all the tools, food, and clothes you will need on a bike trip. They also made the opening in the resevoir big enough so you can fill it with ICE. Highly recommended if you want your drink to stay cold for a while. I also have to say that I really like the way if feels once strapped to your back...VERY LIGHT. I do a fair amount of hiking too, and this is a great pack to take on any day trips. I definitly recommend this system for bikers and hikers alike. I was really happy with the price. I bought mine at an REI grand opening for $59.99. Can't beat that!
Weaknesses:I guess just the taste of the water. I can't complain though, especially biking in the desert when it's 100 degrees out.
Similar Products Used:Just water bottles, which I will never go back to.

Bottom Line:If you are looking for a hydration system that can do it all , then this is the one for you. You can put everything you need inside and off you go without the hassles of extra things to carry or weigh you down. Watch REI or check out their web site. They often have sales that really cut the price on some of these hydration systems and other outdoor gear.

Bottom Line:Best system for the $$. If it had an elastic webbing and came in more colors (blue/black & gray/black only) it would be PERFECT. Holds tons of stuff if you need it to and enough H2O for 2 people! If you are looking to get all your tools off your frame, this is the pack for you! (I am just hoping this crappy tasting water will end soon, this is my first hydration system so I assume this is normal.)

I agree with an earlier statement that you can always carry less than capacity in a big pack but never more than capacity in a small one.

Lowest price I found was at Mud, Sweat & Gears (www.bikeusa.com) at $62.95. I called Nashbar and they beat the price by a nickel and I took advantage of their larger selection because I wanted to order more stuff.

5 "Flamin' Chilis" on the value if you get it for under $65. Over that and you lose one chili per $5 you spend.

Room for extra garments in case I'm expecting bad weather, and conversely a place to put my shirt when it gets hella-hot (used to tie it around my seatpost... which sucked). One thing that amazes me is when I have all my crap in it, pump, tools, tube, cable lock, wallet, cell phone, keys, and a full bladder, needless to say it feels pretty heavy to hold, but on my back I hardly notice its there. I almost got the MULE, but another guy said something along the lines of 'you can carry less in a big pack, but you can't carry more in a small one' which made pretty good sense to me, plus I liked the fact that the blowfish has a sternum strap. Bottom Line:This is an excellent pack! It's very adjustable, which is a major plus, and there are plenty of secure compartments to keep tools from banging around. The shoulder straps have places where you can clip flashers or other gear and there is a tube clip you can shift to either side. This is a great setup for a medium sized pack because it can hold a great deal of stuff without being bulky.

Strengths:
Space, chest strap, pocket arrangement, weight, looks
Weaknesses:
The Blowfish expander zipper got caught twice in the material beneath, wish the 2nd compartment was insulated, for 2 bladders

Bike Setup:
Diamondback DBR-X2 (mountain)
Bottom Line:I use Camelbak packs, with 100oz(3ltr) Platypus bladders, with Blackburn mouthpiece valves. My '97 mule started ripping at the bottom after a year and a half. I washed it too much, I think. I'll only wash this Blowfish once a month, by hand. The Blowfish gets a little heavy, with 100oz of ice water, a Topeak Alien tool, pump, 2 tubes, and some munchies, but that's to be expected. It's a great product, just hope the bottom sides don't rip like the Mule did. Hint, use a Platypus Big Gulp bladder, no taste whatsoever, with ziploc top. And the Blackburn valves are the best, but the Camelbak big bite is decent, as wll. Insulate the tube. Water is soooo important here in Texas during the summer. I got mine at Bikeworld in San Antonio for $69. www.bikeworld.com The best upgrade I made was when I went from water bottles and tool kits/pumps mounted on the bike, to a Camelbak, or whatever brand you use. Get one........now.

Strengths:
tons of space!
nice addition of the sternum strap
nice straps
good screw on cap
double bite valve, major improvement
Weaknesses:
bottom of water compartment is not insulated
Similar Products Used:
Camelbak MULE
Bottom Line:Awesome. The wealth of pockets allows you to keep your grimy clothes away from your grimy tools away from your grimy food. Also, one can unzip an extra compartment for an extra windbreaker. The pockets also allow me to bring my trail book, a plus when I'm on new trails. Now, both sides of the water area are insulated but the bottom is not, and things get wet down there. If you want that biker babes number to stay dry, make sure it is nowhere near the bottom. A minor gripe, awesome upgrade!

Bottom Line:Very useful for long rides. Keeps water cold longer than Polar Water bottle. Comparing to the Camelbak MULE, there doesn't seem to be a weight penalty for having the expandable compartment.

Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
ample H2O capacity
expandability - stays relatively compact until you really need the extra space.
numerous zippered pockets.
great insulated water compartment. water stays cool for quite awhile.
very comfortable shoulder straps and secure front straps.
big-bite valve really delivers the water.
optional insulated tube cover does a good job of keeping water cool in the the tube.
optional blatter insert gets the inside of the thing dry.
Weaknesses:
returned 1st one due to faulty zipper. Others have also noted a few quality glitches like this in other Camelbak models.
back gets sweaty.
hole in pack that you feed the value and tube thru doesn't seem to have been enlarged to easily accept the new big-bite valve. it's always a struggle to get the thing thru it.
Bottom Line:Excellent product. Can carry a lot of stuff and you can keep it all organized with all the pockets available. Is relatively compact if you don't need the expandable compartment. I use it for both road and mtn biking, and I've taken it to MLB and PGA events. It hauls everything I need - water, food, binocs, etc. Very comfortable fit, except that your back can/does get sweaty. Readily available, albeit a little costly, replacement/update parts. Provided enough padding that it probably saved me from injury during a couple of falls while mtn. biking. This has been a great purchase and I use it more than just for biking.

Weaknesses:

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:This pak is the best for the money by far. plenty of water for the longest day trips, and mpre than eno8ugh storage. Layout of storage is better than HAWG for 10 smackers less (that's like 6 or 7 powerbars!) Better that flimsy mule with tons more storage & sturdier and more useful design. 5 flaming peppers

Strengths:
-100 OZ-power!!!!
-enough storage room for slr-camera or spare clothing
-Design and little gimmicks that turn out very useful
-BIG GULP VALVE !
Weaknesses:
-as with any camelback-like system your back gets sweaty
-not as easy to clean as bottles
Similar Products Used:
Camelback classic, MULE, bottles, Platypus
Bike Setup:
Zaskar with X-vert and stuff made for abuse
Bottom Line:In my opinion this product is very near to perfection. Nearly everything i disliked at my old camelback they redesigned (more storage room, new bladder with screw cap, valve and shoulder straps).
You don't notice the weight on your back and the Blowfish can be strapped on your back secure enough even for severe riding conditions.
I think the Blowfish is more versatile than the MULE and superior to any other hydration system: once used you never want to live without a Camelback.
It's also great for snowboarding!

Bottom Line:I have had two previous camelbaks, my last one was a rouge. Bought the blowfish for the 100 ounce bladder and increased storage. This pack is really nice. It holds a lot of stuff, and the expandable Blowfish pocket is great. If i take a jacket or take off my long pants I can throw them in with a lot of room to spare. PLus the 100 ounce is great for longer rides and the pack fits nicley and seems to be very comfortable. Keep up the good work Camelbak. Note this pack from what i have seen costs only a few dollars more than the mule but offers alot more in terms of storage just to let you know.
