Strengths:all the tools you need for trailside adjustments
Weaknesses:none
Bike Setup:2000 Supercaliber XT/XTR
Bottom Line:I have used this tool for years with no problems - folds up nicely and fits into small spaces - has all the common needs -I left it in the car once and had to borrow a no-name tool to adjust my seatpost and it snapped right off. If i ever lost this I would buy another that same day

Favorite Trail:Any that will prolly cause me to face plant hard
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:BikeUSA
Strengths:Has almost everything you need for the trail, including a pair of tire levers! Sturdy nylon pouch with fixer-thingy-attachy-point. Splits into two pieces for easier handling or using two tools simultaneously.
Weaknesses:Bulky, square turd fits awkwardly in my seat wedge. The fixer-thingy-attachy-point adds additional bulk to pouch. If you wanted to mount the pouch on the bike directly (which I wouldn't do because its just one thing to fly off in mad crash) you have buy the bracket (2 styles-stem or bar/post) separately. Doesn't include pliers.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Custom '08 S-Works Stumpy, Crank Bros Cobalt XC rims.
Bottom Line:I've had this now for 8 years and its been both my trail-side tool that has gotten me out of all the jams I've been in, as well as a general purpose garage tool supplementing my auto tools when performing bike maintenance and repairs.

Besides the bulkiness, the only lament I have is that it doesn't come with a plier tool and I was contemplating carrying a compact Leatherman for that purpose (more weight and bulk). But I guess Topeak has listened to customers and their new Alien DX Multi-Tool comes with a plier for pulling on cables during trailside repairs!

The Alien II can be had online now for roughly $25. The new Alien DX for $39.

Overall, if price and not having a plier along is more better for you, I would definitely recommend the Alien/II.

Otherwise, my choice would be the new Alien DX (which I will review when I finally receive it and put it to use).

At $25, the best value for what it does! Dropped a hot poop for missing a handy all-purpose plier tool.

the kit is modular, you can split ti in to 2 pices for more clerance and easy handelling.
Weaknesses:abit havy (but i dont mind it)
Bottom Line:when i go for aride i like to be prepared for anything, this tool give me confidence cose it's got all the tools inside.
saved me more then one time (helped me convert to a singlespeed when my rear druiler got yanked out taking with him 3 spokes from the rear wheel. 50 miles from no where...)
if you ride xc you can sattrl for a smaller toolkit but if you go on long rides in hard terrains you need to be prpeard for enything...dont think twice...it's alife saver!

Strengths:Solidly built. Tons of tools
Weaknesses:bulky and heavy
Similar Products Used:various cheap multi-tools
Bike Setup:trek fuel 98
trek XO 1
Specialized Stumpjumper (SS converted)
trek 1000
Bottom Line:I think I have had this tool for close to 10 years. I got it as a gift shortly after they first came out with them. I may have gotten it x-mas of 1998. It has gotten tons of use of the years and still performs better than any other multi tool i've used. A small piece broke off the body of mine that makes the two tools no longer clip together, but everything else has been wonderful.

I don't there is a tool on it that I haven't used many times. Sometimes for rides or races I take it out of its case and put 1 tool in my right jersey pocket and the other in my left. Just to keep the bulkiness a little less.

Price Paid: $30.00

Strengths:The thing has the exact amount of tools. I am a recumbent biker and it's equally fair with recumbents as well. There are not too many tools in the Alien, but all the possible nuts and screws have been considered before it was issued.
I don't fail on any; perhaps a canopener like the Swiss Wenger or Victorinox could do.
At this moment of writing the review I am considering to buy the DX. Strong would be a good wire cutter, but I read a review that that particular tool is not functioning properly.
Weaknesses:you can loose it.
Perhaps the plastic parts might have been given a bit more stiffness. For my tight 20"tyres, they bend a bit to much.
Perhaps the people of Topeak thought about the cranktool it to be used with some aditional help. I am not going to be negative on it but it may be a weak thing to use in practice: my cranks are just too tight with my pedals that I can open the thing.
Similar Products Used:I tried to get a tool with equal consideration for the needs of the bike but did not find any.
Bike Setup:Challenge Hurricane; Rohloff Speedhub; Son; Shimano XTR Discbrakes; some Rockshock damper.
Bottom Line:The tools I have with me during travelling include a Leatherman Crunch, a Buck Whittaker and this Topeak Alien.
I still try to find some good and most lightweight combination of tools but this Topeak Alien is most efficient. Perhaps an improvement on a reliable cable cutter would make sense?

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:Halfords
Strengths:Compact, great range of functions, sturdy and heavy enough to notice when you've not got it with you.
Weaknesses:It's heavy, no Torx heads, some tools don't "lock" so get a bit wobbly under load.
Similar Products Used:Plenty of no-name multi-tools and various individual items
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel EX8, Giant XTC850, Giant TCR Team
Bottom Line:I've had this for nearly 5 yeas now and never leave home (on the bike) without it. Small enough to fit in a saddle pack on a road bike and comes with all the tools you're likely to need on the road/trail. A tough nylon pouch keeps sharp edges and loose tools in place, but an elastic band does the same job and it's lighter. Not the cheapest, but I've not found anything else that comes close.

Bottom Line:This is the best tool I've ever used! While it's a little heavy, it works better than every other cheap multi-tool i've ever seen. This includes other Topeak products. I would recommend this to anyone. The only thing that would be better is if it were lighter, but then that would compromise quality.

Bottom Line:An excellent tool in design, and build. Compact, lightweight, multi-functional, a "swiss army knife" of tools. I carry my Topeak Alien II whenever I ride. Agreed, it can not replace a good selection of "shop" quality tools,(for bike repair and regular maintenance) but for its intended purpose and functionality, it can't be beat. To date not only have I made minor adjustments on my bike on the trail, but I have also made emergency repairs on others bikes when their tools were un-able to do the job or left behind. It is a little pricey, but for what one gets and the peace of mind it gives, (knowing it is in my seat bag), it is definitely worth every penny spent.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Compact, Well Made,
Weaknesses:Built in Tyre levers may break easily. Torx bit and Pedal wrench keep falling off. Steel may be of an average grade.
Similar Products Used:None
Bottom Line:While This tool will not replace quality workshop tools it is exceptional for its intended purpose. Having said that I HAVE used it to totally strip down my bike on a few occasions and all tools have held up exceptionally well. The pedal wrench is awkward to use but many pedals I know of have hex key recesses accessable from the inside of the crank arm anyway.
The steel used for the Hex Keys and wrenches seems a fraction soft. Make sure hex keys are fitted properley and the philips head screwdriver fits the screw head properley to avoid rounding the tools.
The torx bit can be annoying the way it drops out when the pedal wrench is removed but all in all the positives outweigh the negatives. I keep mine in my pocket while riding and forget its even there so weight is not a real problem.
Bottom Line...If you are looking for a good Multi tool that will last years with a little care and will get you out of a jam, then the Alien is that tool.
In hindsight I would buy this product again.

Bottom Line:I wound up giving this tool away to a friend after finding my old Topeak allen key tool. It's bulky (especially w/ the pouch) and has a bunch of tools that aren't used on today's bikes. Box wrenches? Who needs those. Emergency pedal wrench? hmmm, maybe. Just get yourself a multi-tool with the hex wrenches and screw driver, and a seperate Park Tool chain tool. Strengths:The chain tool works as well as any and I tend to use it even in shop situations when it's the one within easiest reach.
I've used most of the hex wrenches pretty often and none of them show signs of wear. Same with the 8, 9, and 10mm wrenches.
The spoke wrenches are adequate for on-the spot work.
The tire levers seem to work okay, but aren't quite bombproof enough that I would trust them with someone who didn't know how to not break regular plastic levers.
Generally durable enough to not be a joke.
Really does have most everything you need for emergency repair. Yes, pliers would be very handy, but you can get by without them, although not very well in certain situations.
The knife is a smart addition.
Weaknesses:The torx bit doesn't sit securely in it's little recessed nook, and falls out whenever the pedal wrench is out of place.
The "pedal wrench" is just stupid. There is absolutely no reason I can think of why you'd need to remove your pedals on the trail or road. Also, it falls out similarly to the torx bit. Using a pressed plastic fit like this to hold something and expecting the tool to function correctly for years = bad design.
In general, it has to be said that tightening and loosening fasteners with this thing isn't nearly as efficient or easy as it is with shop tools. The tool is bulky and so it doesnt' turn in your hand very well, plus it's frequently a pain to use it in tight places - ie, various brake mounting & adjustment fasteners when racks are in the way, etc. However, I've yet to come across a place so tight that it just wouldn't get the job done.
I think I would rather have not paid for the belt case.
I would be kinda surprised if the tire levers lasted a really long time under regular use. It may be a better design to just leave levers out of the multi-tool and carry seperate, replaceable ones around.
The hex wrenches are longer than they need to be. Compare with the Crank Bros tool.
Similar Products Used:Park AWS's, "Hanz Tool", Crank Bros multi-17, plus most at least fairly common shop tools.
I haven't used the Crank Bros tool enough to vouch for it's durability (some people say it has problems) but it's design sure has advantages over the Alien... no integrated tire levers, the wrenches are only as long as is really necessary, none of this pedal wrench stuff, and better spoke wrenches that include 4 gauges instead of 2.
Bike Setup:trek 520 set up for pretty hardcore loaded commuting and touring
Bottom Line:It has some obvious design problems, but sadly it manages to be about as good as it gets. Trustworthy when it counts although I still see fit to carry extra tire levers, which are generally the most commonly used roadside tool anyway... If you're going to be in a situation where you can predict needing to deal with any kind of cable anchoring or disagreeable cable quick releases, I would definitely bring along some needlenose pliers. With the exception of the chain tool, nothing on here works as well as a equivelant shop tool.

Strengths:It has most of the tools you might need on the road/trail in a compact package.
Weaknesses:The top-of-the-like model, the Alien DX has too much tools jammed toghether, IMHO. Quality of some suffers as the result. The "pliers" are a joke, you can barely grab a cable with them. On the other hand this means I don't have to haul my Leatherman with me too.
Similar Products Used:Leatherman tools
Bottom Line:Initially I bought Alien but lost it on one of the off-road day rides. So I decided to get Alien DX as a replacement. I must say I am not impressed. Yes, it has more tools (most of which I don't need) and it is just $10 more then a regular Alien. I basically bought it because I wanted to have half-decent pliers to replace/tighten cables on the road. But that was a disappointment. My Leatherman Micra scissors are sturdier then these "pliers". If I had to buy again, I'd buy a regular Alien.

Strengths:This is for the new Alien XT. It only has 17 functions and a magnesium-alloy body. Only 180 grams.
Weaknesses:Only a single tire lever. Two would have been nice.
Similar Products Used:Ritchey CPR 9, Topeak Power 21.
Bike Setup:Too many to mention.
Bottom Line:I was really surprised at how good this tool works. With its metal body, it stays tight and under control. It has a nifty locking feature for the tire lever, knife and screwdriver/opener. It works like a knife with a locking blade. It's a shame this feature couldn't be applied to more or all of the tools. All of the tools fit well, and I never felt like any were going to slip or strip. The next step is to add some titanium to the mix and lighten it up even more. I still carry my SRP titanium chain tool. Overall, this is exactly the thing to carry in the out-back with you.

Strengths:Many tools in small package, light nad practical.
Weaknesses:Wrench falls all the time, the knife is a little bit uncomfortable to use, the tool gets loose, the material which it´s made from isn´t very good so you can wear it out or spoil the tool very fast, for example the screwer tips and allen wrenches.
Similar Products Used:No similar products tested.
Bike Setup:It doesn´t matter.
Bottom Line:Be sure to use the tool properly, you can lose some parts and the bad quality of the steel can spoil some components on your bike. I had a nightmare 2 days before a race because I spoiled a bolt of my disc brake caliper and had to make some tumbling to loose it, the reason was the bad quality of an allen wrench wich complicated a single adjust.

Strengths:Innovative space-saving techniques, Torx T25 bit for disc brakes, chain tool, small pliers, sharp knife.
Weaknesses:Made in Taiwan. Also, I use the Crank Bros. Speed Lever instead of the tire levers that came with my Alien. The pedal wrench doesn't look that strong, and the instructions came with the warning "don't attempt to remove pedals with wrench." What else are you supposed to do with a pedal wrench when you're on the trail? Also, get rid of the bottle opener. I know it has a flat-head screwdriver bit on the end, but if you're mountain biking and need a beer (???), just twist it with your hands, you most likely have gloves on anyway. The space used on the Alien for the bottle opener could be better spent on another tool (not a saw.) Pliers don't look like they're big enough to do anything. I carry a small pair of Vise-Grips with me and a Leatherman as well, which has a bigger pair of pliers.
Similar Products Used:Mixed bag of metric Allen head wrenches.
Bike Setup:2000 Gary Fisher Tassajara.
Bottom Line:I have the Alien DX, which is the top of the line, and it's worth spending $39 for over $29 for the regular Alien. I recommend practicing using it on your bike in the garage, otherwise when you get out on the trail you'll waste time fiddling with it. Although made in Taiwan, it's a quality tool. Don't go riding without one. You never know when a cute mountain bike chick will be broken down on the trail needing help and you won't be able to help her and get her number because you didn't bring your Alien with you!

2. Tire irons not ergonomic.
3. A little heavy but a lot lighter than a tool chest.
Similar Products Used:various
Bike Setup:Sugar 3...upgraded to about a 1.5
Bottom Line:Best tool I've seen for the money. I honestly would not go on a ride without it. Has almost every tool you would need in case of an emergency and then some. Gripes listed above are minor. The devise that locks the two sides of the tool together broke but when the Alien is slid together the tools is still fairly secure. I wouldn't use the tire irons. They're not very ergonomic and breaking them....well you'd have a big plastic chunk missing from your tool...might not hurt it's usefulness (except for the broken tire iron) but it would be a bummer. I carry a set of tire irons along with my alien. Online, this sells for around $30. Not a bad deal.

If I could, I'd give it 4.5 chilis..but since I can't, I guess I'll give it four...not perfect but pretty darn close.

3. Includes a chain tool.
Weaknesses:1. A little too big to fit in tight places. Allen wrenches could be shorter and still do the job.

2. I wouldn't want to remove a pedal with the "emergency pedal tool.

3. Don't count on the tire irons. Good idea, and may work OK in a real pinch, but the knife remains exposed when using them.

4. Some sort of pliers, no matter how rudimentary, would be really useful.

The chain tool on the crank bros works only on SRAM chains. The Alien works on everything. No...it's not as good as the chaintool I have at home...but it gets the job done on any chain. Bottom Line:This tool is the best, hands down. It's a little bigger than other folding sets but still fits fine in my ultra-small wedgie pack alongside a flat kit, first aid stuff and a CO2 pump with a spare bulb. The tire levers work on the trails in a pinch, even on some of the harder-to-fit rims, but do yourself a favor and use real (Park) levers at home. The overall quality of the tool is fantastic. Mine is one of the newer models with the small 15mm pedal wrench that uses a friction fit to hold onto the hex half of the tool body. After a month or so, the 'plug' that held the wrench on had apparently worn down and I lost the wrench somewhere on the trails. I checked the Topeak website to buy a replacement and after not finding one, emailed customer support. They offered to send me out not only a replacement wrench, but a NEW TOOL HALF, no questions asked. UNBELIEVABLE customer supprt. Just plain awesome. But I guess it's to be expected when you pay $40 for a tool, right? I would have only givin this 3 chilis for value because of the price but the customer support notches it up to 4.

The Alien is lighter, point for ToPeak;
The Park has a patch kit, point for Park;
Pedal wrench, point for ToPeak;
No exposed tools in closed position, point for Park;
Carrying case, point for ToPeak;
Cheaper (at least in Canada), point for Park;
Locking device, point for ToPeak;
Ruler (although a little unnecessary), point for Park;
Nicer finish, point for ToPeak;
And, finally, a sharp and serrated knife, point for ToPeak.

6 points for ToPeak, 4 for Park. Add the fact that the Alien is the coolest bike tool you could ever carry, and you have yourself a winner.

I tend often not to carry it but rely on tire levers and separate allen wrenches in my jersey pocket, but on a long ride I bring the Alien because of the chain tool (excellent) and the screwdriver - LOOK cleats need a bladed screwdriver.

A few times I've ridden with people who had wheels collapse or chains break. The Alien can fix them and get home from some remote place. One roadside fix 20 miles from nowhere on a Sunday is worth the price several times over.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Well Rounded, Sturdy, a real life saver ! This is the ONE tool to carry in your camelback or undersaddle case along with your tube, and presta valve adapter.
Weaknesses:Hard to get leverage on the allens. I know I should be using something else for this, but I use the Alien for EVERYTHING including installing/removing my Thule rack. Its just difficult getting good leverage on the wrenches when tightening that thing down. I have to wear my gloves too to minimize the impact on the palm...like I said I admit I should probably have something else for this. But it gets the job done.
Similar Products Used:Full size tire levers, ring full of allens, screwdrivers, pocket knife, chain tool, box ends
Bike Setup:'99 Homegrown Hardtail and late '80s Schwinn Circuit
Bottom Line:I can't tell you HOW many jams this tool has gotten me out of...chain breaking on the trail, changing tires,handlebars that get KNOCKED loose, Ditto on levers, etc. Plus, I use it as my primary tool for routine maintenance and upgrades. I'd love to have one of those cool Park tool kits that retails for $250, but until I can afford one, I can honestly say I haven't spent a BETTER $35 in the last two years. It has not only paid for itself innumerable times for myself AND riding buddies, but it has gotten me back to my CAR ! The only other tools I've bought specifically for my bikes are a Park cable/housing cutter, presta adapter, and an air pump that plugs into my car lighter adapter.

Weaknesses:the pedal wrench attachment doesn't stay on its little nub (but I keep it in the nylon case buried deep in the bowels of my camelbak blowfish anyway), no pliers...
Bike Setup:hardtail xc/freeride
Bottom Line:Oddly enough in my quest to find an all in one tool for MTB, every tool I could find in the LBS's were missing one or two things that I wanted them to have except this one. All I carry besides this thing and a pump is a tiny pair of needlenose pliers. It doesn't do anything great but it does everything good enough to be worth its weight and cost. Bottom Line:A good tool. When I broke a chain on the trail and may buddy pulled out his Alien to fix it, I was hooked. Mine has never let me down on the trail, although I did break the flat head screwdriver tip off (didn't really need it anyway), and finally snapped the chain tool frame. But this was after a lot of use / abuse. I e-mailed Topeak, and Fran sent me replacement parts, no charge, no questions asked. This is what I call fantastic service. Be aware that the tool isn't stainless steel, and it will rust if you don't oil it. Mine has a little rust, but it still works great! I'll give it 4 chillis, 'cause it did break, but I was overusing it anyway, and Topeak took care of me.

The quality is impeccable. Trying to get my pedals out once I stripped the 6 mm head of my Park Y wrench. The Alien took over and the pedal surrendered.
I have the original, sans pedal wrench (unnecessary because I have Time ATACs) and without the detachable chain tool.
