Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:REI
Strengths:Easy to use if you follow the instructions.
Weaknesses:None I've noticed.
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Rocky Mountain Element 30
Bottom Line:I purchased this product last spring and have used it at least five or six times this season and it works great. I followed the instructions and haven’t had any problems and it really does an excellent job cleaning my chain. I ran out of the “Finish Line Solvent” that came with the unit and am now using “Simple Green” cleaner, which is a water soluble cleaner and it works even better. My chain shines when after using this product. I highly recommend it.

Looking at some of the other reviews - I think the key to successful use of this product is to read and follow the instructions!

Strengths:does the job when new
Weaknesses:brushes disintegrated after a few years
Similar Products Used:Park
Bottom Line:This was a made in Italy unit purchased around 2002. I just took it out (4/2005) and found that the brush body material was decomposing and the brushes just fell apart. Unit wasn't exposed to any strong solvents and was air dried after each use. Used maybe 10 times over the last few years. I'll stick with the Park cleaner.

Date Reviewed: May 28, 2004
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:Performance bike
Strengths:Very easy to use and set up, sits nicely on it's base even when full of degreaser.
Weaknesses:could clean side of chain a little better
Similar Products Used:brush and bucket of gasoline
Bike Setup:'03 Specialized Epic Comp with '04 Brain, Fox F80, crank bros pedals, Azonic carbon bars, shimano discs
Bottom Line:For a poorly maintained chain I needed to run it through about three helpings of degreaser. Works great for everyday type cleanings but the old bucket of gas might be better for those really dirty chains. For the price, nothing compares to it's ease of use, and who can complain when it has a lifetime warranty. Maybe the older versions were made from a different material but this one seems very solid to me. Best option out there for cleaners of this type.

Strengths:Easy of use, sturdy, lifetime guarantee
Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:Toothbrush, bucket, and degreaser. First time I bought a chain cleaning product of this sort.
Bottom Line:Not to beat a dead horse, but this product is amazing. To avoid spills, attach the machine to the chain and then add the degreaser...no spills! Practice using it without the degreaser first. Quickest way I ever cleaned a chain! $30 is the most I would pay for this thing. I wanted to buy it without the degreaser, but none of the LBS sold it that way. If you don't have the coin, use a toothbrush, degreaser and a bucket.

Strengths:Does what it says it will, reasonably priced, fantastic customer service!
Bottom Line:I bought this chain cleaner 8-10 years ago based on a magazine recomendation. It has done a very good job through the years, and I'm sad to say it finally broke last month. I was going to buy a new one when I noticed it had a lifetime warranty. I decided to contact Finish Line about filing a warranty claim. Long story short, my new "kit" (not just the cleaner) arrived last week. I look forward to many years to come with this fantastic, easy to use tool. Finish Line has a customer for life.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $20.00
Purchased At:Local Sporting Goods Store
Strengths:Easy to use. Cleans chain pretty well. Clamps on nicely to the chain and stays in place. Don't even need to hold it while turning pedals.
Weaknesses:Easy to spill degreaser until you get the hang of it. Degreaser that came with it is a concentrate that requires you mix with water (unless you're rich and can afford to use a little bottle every cleaning). It is a 120ml bottle and makes up to 1 ltr of degreaser. Problem is, the bottle is black and has no measuring line. So if you want to make 1/2 liter, there is no way to measure out 1/2 of the bottle. Used a measuring cup of my wife's the first time, but she caught me. I'm going to buy another degreaser to use with it.
Similar Products Used:Park chain cleaner
Bike Setup:Mountain
Bottom Line:I've used this a number of times and it is, in my opinion, much better and easier than the Park version of it (I'm comparing it to a Park that I bought 10 years ago and haven't used in a while, so maybe Park has improved it). I did spill a bunch of degreaser the first time I used it, but have been fine ever since. As far as it's durability goes, I guess we'll see, but the chain runs through it so smoothly, I can't see where there would be major stress points that would cause it break anywhere.
I'm marking it down 1 Flamin' Chli on value becuase I think all of this crap is overpriced, but it's no more overpriced than anybody elses.

Bottom Line:I think everyone agrees that cleaning a bike is a simple and quick affair, until it comes to the chainrings, cogs and chain. It used to take me between half an hour to an hour to make these cleanish. It used to be a downright pain in the butt cleaning the drivetrain.
Purchased this product and washing the bike became a joy again. Cleaning the entire drivetrain then lubing it takes me less than 15 minutes now and there is no way I'm cleaning my chain without this very practical tool. I have no trouble with the quality of the housing. Just wished the solvent cost much less.

Strengths:The tool is so much easier and faster than cleaning by hand. The tool also doesn't make a big mess as when cleaning by hand; it did not splatter the cleaner.
Weaknesses:Although the tool works fine, it feels somewhat flimsy.
Similar Products Used:toothbrush, rags, and degreaser
Bottom Line:I bought this tool based upon the mtbr reviews of the various chain cleaning tools (Finish Line, Park, and Pedro's), and I have to say that I am pleased with my choice. I definitely recommend it.

While I prefer to have a clean chain (smoother riding), it might be just as easy to buy a new chain more frequently than to clean it. The price is probably about the same whether you buy a chain or purchase more degreaser.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:Performance.com
Strengths:Easy to open, close, fill, and clean afterwords. Chain goes completely through the fluid. Good work with brushes to get between the links. "Brushes" at the exit clean the side of the chain as well. The floor was almost drip free, very few splatters. Quicker than toothbrush. Similar to Vetta, but this one works. Performance.com deal was a good price, came with cleaner and lube.
Weaknesses:The chain cleaner must be held in place while the pedaling backwards. The little derailer clip did not hold the chain cleaner in place. Plastic seems a little weak, but had no problems.
Similar Products Used:8 year old Vetta. It actually worked well, except it splattered fluid on the floor and did not clean the sides of the chain.
Bike Setup:Stock Cannondale F900
Bottom Line:My chain was so dirty after 4 months of neglect that I had to run it throught twice to get it fully clean. I used the garden hose to blast the cleaner out. That took about 10 seconds. Be careful so you don't loose the brushes. It's a great tool for the good price. I'll comment back in a few months and let all know if I'm just as happy.

It's sure a lot quicker and safer than gasoline, a toothbrush, and a bunch of rags.

For under $20, I can get my chain clean in about 5 minutes. A few more minutes to lube and cleanup and it's all ready to go on the next ride in about 10 minutes.

Bottom Line:This thing works great. I use White Lightning (wax type) lube, which I thought may cause a problem in getting off because it is less soluble. No problem for this cleaner. I looked at the Pedro's and Parks comparable models, and the Finish Line has the longest brushes to get in between the links. Mountain Biking magazine rates this as the best cleaner on the market, and it has "new improved plastic" and a lifetime guarantee. That's important given all of the Pedro's units that are breaking due to the bad plastic.

Bottom Line:I was leary of chain cleaners after reading some reviews but I found this one on sale for $15 with small bottle of cleaner. I use White Lightning lube so by the time it needs cleaning its pretty gunked up with waxy crud. Takes two cleanings to thoroughly clean the chain with the included cleaner solution. The plastic scrubbing baffles at the end of the box will splatter but a paper towel over that part keeps it in check. I like the fact you can easily remove the cleaning brushes to rinse it all out.

Bottom Line:

I had my doubts about buying this product after reading the reviews of the poor quality plastic, but I couldn't resist when I saw that the new package claimed Better Plastic! and Lifetime Guarantee!
Lo and behold, the plastic is not brittle, and feels relatively sturdy. Sure, you could probably break it in your hands if you really really wanted to, but it's certainly up to the rigors of chain-cleaning (unless you are XTREME! in which case why bother with a chain cleaner?)
Don't know how it will hold up in the summer sun, and I don't particularly care for the semi-reliable deraileur mount (I just hold it in my hand).
Oh, how does it clean, you ask? Almost as well as a thorough hand cleaning, but far, far easier.

Bottom Line:

I bought this and I have had it for a while. It works great for if you are using a wet lube and not a wax based one. It is hard to get it level so the degreaser doens't sit in there very well. The handsfree operation holds true but there is a lot of degreaser spray when you are cleaning so you better do it outside. In general if you are after a quick clean after a nasty ride it will do the job real well but if you are very picky then you might want to do it some other way because it doesn't get into the grooves on the side of the chain.

Bottom Line:

I bought the Finish Line chain cleaner about a month ago when I started
cleaning up a few of my old bikes. Well, I am very satisfied with it
but I ran into a few problems. The cleaner stays in place by clinging to
to the bottom of the derailer, which holds it in place for hands free use.
The problem with this is that on old bikes where the pullys on the derailer
are stiff and very friction causing, the chain cleaner just flips the
derailer up and rolls out of place. Other than that I love the features of
this chain cleaner. It has a nice little resovior that uses just a little
degreaser each use rather than guzzling it up like park tools chain gang.
It also has hands free use. Just fill the resovior with degreaser, hook it
to your chain and backpedal. It comes apart and cleans very easily, I just
set it on the ground and squirt it with the hose. Last of all, the bruches
and pads are replaceable for just $4.00 I give it five chilies because the
problems I ran into were because of my lace of lubrication to my derailer.
Wonderful performance! I

Bottom Line:

I was reluctant to buy a chain cleaner because, from reading the reviews, it didn't seem like any of them worked. I bought the finish line cleaner because it looked like it would work better than the others. I'm very satisfied with it. Although it doesn't get the chain as clean as if you removed it and dipped it in degreaser, it gets it as clean as can be expected. Personally, it doesn't make much sense to break the chain over and over again just to clean it. The chain is one thing you do not want to break on your ride. This is a good, solid product that works fairly well. It was much more effective than cleaning by hand with a brush. Don't believe others who criticize it because it can't clean every single speck of dirt off the chain.

Bottom Line:

The Finishline chain cleaner works great but the plastic it is made of
cannot withstand the temperatures in the back of my car during midsummer in
Northern California. It literally got so soft that I could bend it.
Not a very good road trip unit. I talked to Ray at Finish Line (516-666-7300) about the melt down of my
chain cleaner. He's sending me a new unit, with instructions to keep it out
of the sun. Fair enough. Anyway, back to my review. It works great.
Best way to clean a chain, short of breaking it and dowsing it in a bucket.
For those before me that mentioned that they could not get the grit out of the
rollers, you have to replace the solution after it gets dirty. On a dirty chain
I replace the degreaser 3, 4, maybe 5 times, until the liquid stays relatively
clean. For those with problems getting the grease off, what are you lubing you
chain with, axle grease? Use Boeshield T-9.

Bottom Line:

I usually was my chain by hand, by breaking the chain and scrubbing it with a
brush in a metal pan. One time I decided to use the Finish Line Chain Cleaner,
one of several chain cleaners that attach to the chain while still on the bike.
While it certainly is easy to use, just put it around the chain and turn the
pedals, it doesn't get the chain nearly as clean as a good ole' brush and some
elbow grease. This can be seen by the amount of gunk that can still be washed
off the chain after using the device. Save yourself the money from buying this
product; instead wash your chain by hand several times, then buy a new chain
when things are really bad. After all, a Sachs SC-40 chain is less than eight
bucks, and works well (see my review).

Bottom Line:

Who says you need to remove the chain for complete cleaning?! The Finish Line does the job just as well.
You can get a thoroughly cleaned chain in only a few minutes. It attaches to the bottom part of the chain
and hooks onto the rear derailleur cage. Fill it with some degreaser and mix with water. Spin pedal backwards
for 20 seconds and watch all the dirt and crapola dissolve into the cleaner. Then fill it with water and
repeat a couple more times to clean the degreaser off the chain. Dry the chain with a papertowel and you're ready to
re-lube. I clean my chain after every 1 or 2 rides and my chain looks brand new with 600+ miles on it.

Drawback...some dripping will occur especially if you fill it above the fill-line. But, a few pieces of newspaper
solves the problem. Filling it a bit over fill-line ensures more thorough cleaning.
The $24 price is well worth all the hassle of cleaning the chain without this tool.
Comes with small bottle of degreaser, and lube.
