SKS is a German company that is best known for their bike fenders and mudguards in the US, but their product suite also includes pumps, saddle bags, multitools, chainguards and water bottle cages. They have been manufacturing bike pumps for 80 years, and originated the mini pump, and last year sold 7.8 million pumps and 4 millions fenders/mudguards worldwide. Continue reading →

Strengths:    Built like a piece of industrial equipment...solid. Comfortable handles, LONG hose, gauge has a rubber shield. Replacement parts have always been readily available for the 20+ years I have been using it.

Weaknesses:    The new EVA head is a bit funky. When it tends to snap open and smack you pretty hard. It takes quite a bit of pressure to get the lever closed...a little bit of lube on the area where the lever comes in to contact w/the seal relieves this quite a bit. Newer models of the pump have a plastic top cap where the older ones were steel.

Bottom Line:   
Well built, solid piece of equipment...just what you want when dealing w/air pressure and something that gets abused pretty regularly. I bought my first SKS during my first trip to europe as a team mechanic in 1988 and have been using it ever since. I noticed that most of the european teams used this pump as a backup to their compressors and to fine tune tire pressure.

This pump has also been marketed under the "Zefal Husky" name. It has been so widely used for so long parts will be available for a long time to come I think....which is important when you are dealing w/pressure and seals...they fail eventually.

Strengths:    tough, heavy and cool looking, best connection to Presta and Schrader with one fitting, each pump puts a lot of air in

Weaknesses:    gauge is hard to read at first

Bottom Line:   
I love looking at this pump. It is cool and each pump is efficient, moves lots of air.
