I bought this pump because it was recommended at the store one year ago. I thought it was over priced but I needed to buy a pump for that weekend trip.
I love this pump because even though it's not the lightest one like my friends have, it does not drain any ENERGY when I get a flat. It pump really fast, and I get the needed air pressure with 50% less strokes than my buddies. Now they ask for my pump when they need it HAHA.
Easy to switch from regular to presta valves, the handle is very comfortable and has a natural feeling to use all your energy.
I totally recommend it if you are not a weight freak.

Light and tight and just alright. Doesn't pinch hand with T-handle completely down. Nice. It pushes enough air to reflate 29ers soon enough.
I lost a part for this and called Blackburn and they were able to get me back up and on the trail in no time. How cool is that? I thought I was doomed to discard and buy new. Not even close. Thanks Blackburn.
Weaknesses:
It's not a floor pump pro but then it would weigh 3kg and stick out like a samurai sword. It could be carbon and have a pressure gauge but then it would be more $$-ing pesos.

After 11 years the MMP-1 Mammoth MTN frame mountain pump still preforms flawlessly. Ate the start of each riding season I disassemble the unit and clean the seals and it's good to go for the entire season. Exccellent volume for a frame mounted pump, it will fill a 26X2.1 tube with little effort. Head easily switches between Presta and Schrader
The frame mounted clip with it's velcro strap has never failed to hold the pump in place through even the roughest riding conditions.

My second Mammoth after a nonfunctional Crank Bros. and a few years of CO2 cartridges. First one was great. Blackburn make some of the best pumps, and most importantly head designs that work. Latest version has a cool, red anodized pump shaft and nice alloy thumblock. My Crank BRos. mini pump would never be able to seal on a presta valve, leading to no end of grief. In three months of spring, I easily spent more on CO2 cartridges than the price of a Mammoth Mtn. pump. Now I'm back to this great unit, and headed to Mammoth Mountain next month to celebrate.

aluminum shaft, great volume, has worked everytime.

Have to switch nozzle around to switch between presta and schrader. Nozzle rubber "clings" to schrader valve threads making it very hard to remove. Had to rebuild once because of dirt/grime buildup from keeping the pump mounted to the frame.

Bottom Line:
I bought this pump when I first got into mountain biking again around 5 years ago. the LBS guy showed me less expensive pumps, then showed me the Blackburn Mammoth Comp and said "this will be the last frame pump you'll have to buy". Assuming I never lose it, I think this is an accurate statement. I now keep it safely in my camelback to avoid dirt/grime buildup. It is still just a frame pump, so expect some exercise to pump up a tire to pressure. I use a CO2 pump for races, but this pump for every other flat on the trail. Great value, the only real complaint is having to switch the nozzle around for presta and schrader valves.

I figured I would have spare pieces as it wore out. Nice thought, but doesn't help you when it fails you (and it will) deep into a ride. If people think this is a good pump, it is based on looks alone and not on any significant trail use. Look elsewhere.

Very Solid....Gets the job done.

The handle rattles. It is made of plastic and there is nothing to hold it in place while you are riding. Since there is no clamp for the handle it will slide out unless you have it pointed up. Also it doesn't come with a mount that lines the pump up with your frame, only a side mount next to your water bottle. For those of us that use a water pack, and inline mount for your frame is more practical.

I was about 12 miles from home and wasn't carrying an extra tube so I pulled off the side of the trail to patch up my tire. I got it all fixed and had just finished pumping it up. When I released the grip, the pump ripped the valve from my stem, shooting it about 20 feet in the air and into the woods never to seen again. There's nothing worse than walking your bike 12 miles through the woods at night. I'll give it a 3 for value because it was a decent price and it has worked for me on several occassions, but I'm giving it a 1 for overall because it ripped out my stem and sent me on a 12 mile hike home.

Handle rattles badly when mounted on bike so you have to carry it in your hydro-pack or go insane. Luckily it's small so it fits quite nicely in the pack. The thumb lock can be difficult to use while holding the pump on the valve stem.
Bottom Line:
This is a great pump that inflates high volume MTB tires quickly and easily.
Mine is the older style without the Magic Gripper head. I prefer this model as I hardly ever need to pump up Schrader tubes and if I do, I don't mind switching the adapter around. I feel that the simpler design is more reliable.

Bottom Line:
For the amount I paid for the pump, I could not have asked for better performance. There are no problems with losing air putting it on, or taking it off of a presta valve. I have had 6-7 flats in the past 2 weeks, and this pump gets me going fast. To get a faster fill I'd have to use a floor pump or a CO2. For all of you out there using picepoint, stay away from the blackburn tube deal. It sounds great, but those tubes are terrible in rocky So-Cal conditions. I have gotten 5 through and through pinch flats in my last two rides, and I have tried everything short of walking to prevent them.
At any rate, buy this pump. Its cheap, but it works better than anything else I have tried.

(This is a follow up review for the one I posted below. I just bought the new model of the Mammoth MTN Pump....)
It was cheap from Price Point (4 for $25) It pumps up the tire pretty well. Looks very strong. Magic Gripper universal valve can pump Schrader or Presta.
Weaknesses:
Magic Gripper valve makes the pump very heavy.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
After writing the last review, I ordered my new pumps from Price Point. Wow, what a deal, so I bought some for my friends.
In the new pump Blackburn changed the design to the universal valve head. It accepts Presta and Schrader valves without any conversion. For me this wasn't really a desired feature because I don't have to pump up Schrader valves that much, and when I do, I don't mind switching the adapter around. The new pump also seems to be stronger than the old pump. The drawback is that this new design weighs substantialy more than the old design.
Never the less, it's still a decent pump, and the price was right. In my new review I'll have to mark it down a chili for the increased weight.

I've only taken it apart twice since I've had it for cleaning; it's never needed new seals or a "rebuild". I figure 90 seconds is pretty hard to beat even with CO2, so I use the Mammoth in races as well as on training rides. You have to mount the pump with the handle up to prevent it from sliding out. After a year of riding, the pump trapped a lot of dirt and rocks in the chamber and around the seals. However, I only spent about 10 minutes taking it apart and cleaning it up, which made it work like new.

(Didn't notice the pump was gone until I got home, went back the next day to look for it and it was gone.) The bottom line is that a 30-dollar pump should be able to stay on the bike, mountain bike conditions or not. Its marketed at mountain bikers, so the bracket should be able to handle the same abuse as the pump. I'm going to take the remnants of the pump mount to the shop to test the 'lifetime warranty'. We'll see...

my sister gave me one for my b-day after they went on-sale at Performance for 22 bucks. this is the best frame pump- absolutely reliable, and easy to use. i would recommend wrapping all threads (especially between the shaft and handle, and the barrel and the barrel cover through which the shaft moves) with plumber's PTFE thread tape. this will keep the jostling a frame pump receives from unthreading this parts. I like this pump in particular because it's extremely well sealed, and completely rebuildable. plus, it comes with a no questions asked warranty return policy. for those that complain about the handle not staying locked, try attaching the pump to the frame so the handle points up towards your headset and the head is down by the crank. i would still have this pump, except it was attached to my bike when my bike was stolen. now, due to the cash at hand when i bought a new pump, i have a shitty plastic trek wrench force pump, that has nearly none of the features the blackburn had. blackburn's may be expensive, but pumps are one item you don't want to fail you when you need them.

This is an addition to my previous review. I was using this pump on a ride and it started to get grity and not pump very well. To many mud rides I guess. I took it apart and lost the check valve. Pissed I went home, cleaned it and lubed it with Judy Butter. I figued it would worked good enough for emergencys, but wouldn't work on shrader tubes, w/o the check valve :( While shoping at the local REI, I saw a rebuild kit for $3. it had extra O-rings, check valves, rubber bushings, center pins, and even a new mud flap. All for $3, such a deal! Now my pump is as good as new, even after 3 years. The pump has also found a new home in my Camel Back, at least for the mud rides. This may be the last frame pump I have to buy! If you have problems with your Blackburn pump, checkout REI for a rebuild kit, it's a lot cheaper then buying a new pump, and you'll have lot's of spare o-rings and stuff if you need them later. It this age of throw it out if it breaks, a rebuild kit for a pump that works, makes that pump that much better.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I regret spending my money on this every time that I look at it. Actually it is a warranty replacement for another Blackburn pump that expired about 16 months ago. Using it on the trail is a depressing and annoying experience. Nice concept but dreadfully executed. The thumb lock is not ergonomically designed, it is a real pain to flip up. The pivot pin in the handle is plastic and always slips to one side, it always has. The shaft grates in the barrel and always has. The valve seal is still so tight that it will only seat on the tube valve on the third or fourth attempt. It requires enough force to be uncomfortable in the summer and painful in the winter. The pump is beginning to leak air. Do not take it anywhere remote. The one positive thing about it is the warranty, I can get an new one. Oh joy. In contrast, I have a Zefal Plus pump that is 9 years old and is almost a joy to use.

I read all the reviews on pumps I could find (so much trouble with pumps breaking down) and bought the Blackburn MMP-1 Mammoth MTN about a year ago from Supergo for $15. Simply the best $15 ever spent on my bike.I've used this pump literally about 100 times over the last year, mostly on my bike but also helping others. It is very easily converted to us on either type of tube. It pumps up to about 30psi in about 10 seconds, then gets a little harder to pump higher but I've expieranced no leakage. The pin in the handle does move just a tad, but has never threatened to fall out, glue it if its a problem. It is a little tight getting on shrader stems, but good! I don't have to take extra seconds with the locking lever to hold it in place. Because it is so tight, the rubber at the tip has become a little chewed, but works perfect still.I started carrying this pump on my bike, then moved it to my camelback after reading that keeping it cleaner will help it last longer. But after only a couple months I put is back on my bike, the mount that comes with it is excellent, fits under the bottle holder.Tip: I considered buying a floor pump for other than rides, but decided to try this pump for a while to check its durability, so glad I did. Because it is my only pump and I use it for everything, I have become very adapt at using it very efficiently. I just (minutes ago) took it apart, cleaned it with dish soap, and put some Phil grease on it. It took me 5 minutes, first time. It was a little gritty in there, funny that it was still working perfectly after the many times I had it completely covered in mud. This pump has lasted about a year, it could break tomorrow and I would buy the same pump again, no complaints. I've heard the customer service is excellent and would have to look at the Blackburn mini pump, but can't imagine a better pump for the money.

Plusses: nice styling, red color fits my look, and the pump gives a lot of air with each stroke. Minuses:the pin holding the flip-out handle comes loose- starts drifting out of the handle. Also, the pump handle does NOT stay bound to the pump body- there is a too delicate stiction fit. Consequently, the handle can extend when you least want it to- like when you're on a downhill and it's hanging off your bike. Not good at delivering higher pressures, so you'd better be wicked strong if you're using it for cyclocross, etc., where you may need more than 50 lbs. This pump works for MTB but you must be aware of the shortcomings and make sure you have it held together when you ride.

This pump is much better than my Zefal was (it broke within the first week) and has lasted more than a year of rough riding. The fold out handle is a great feature. I do lots of riding in rain and mud, and have never had any problems with water getting into the barrel. I cut an old 1 inch tube and fit it over the handle and barrel so the handle wouldn't bounce and to cover the opening leading into the shaft area - possibly that prevents water from entering via the shaft hole. The little pin that holds the handle onto the shaft likes to move a bit, but thats very minor but should be fixed by Blackburn. Compared to the Zefals and Performance mini-pumps, this pump is a big improvement.

I have had nothing but problems with most of the Blackburn products I've ever used, especially their pumps. I am currently in possesion of my fourth Bllackburn pump; the first three were warrantied. The first two had the heads break off. After those two I was given a Mammoth pump. I thought my problems had been addressed; the Mammoth had much beefier construction, especially at the head. At first it seemed to work fine, but the first time I needed to use it on the trail it would not produce any air pressure, the seals were shot. This pump was less than a month old. I disasembled the pump to find it full of water and mud; I had been carrying it with the provided Blackburn frame-mounted-clip. I washed it out and still could not get it to work (finally a little electical tape did the trick, carry some with you). Mountain biking is a dirty sport, products should be designed with this in mind and be able to withstand poor conditions at least a little better than this. I was given another Mammoth as a repacement, but I'm still not pleased with the product as a whole. It does not reach a very high air pressure before the seals start seeping; and no I'm not pumping up road tires with it. It is not something I feel that I can rely on; not a good feeling to have about a product that is supposed to be able to get you home from the middle of nowhere. Now any pump I carry on the trail I carry in my camelback next to the bladder (just stuff it in, it'll fit) to keep it away from all the muck. Sure the Blackburn pumps look good, but they do not seem to be made very well. They just do not seem to hold up. We have had several customers experiencing similar problems also. I do have a Blackburn floor pump, Trackpump 2, which has been working fine for a while now.

However, as long as it is mounted on the bike in such a manner that gravity cannot pull the handle down, this is only an annoyance and not a major problem. I've had two flats in the past month and the pump came through with a minimum of fuss. I wish that Blackburn would replace all the plastic parts with either aluminum or carbon fiber. The plastic looks a little cheesey and I don't know how they will hold up when the going gets a bit rougher. It's got a really sturdy thumblock lever, the ability to convert from Presta to Schrader but a bit difficult to pull out that little peice of plastic. An aluminum barrel and a comfortable pivoting handle make this pump the perfect thing to take a long and hard ride. And with a Lifetime warranty, what else could you ask for? Except that they make one without the plastic parts.

I am completely happy with this pump. I haven't had any of problem with it. I owned two Zefal Mini Double Shot pumps before this one (one broke and the other fell off my bike during a race) and I think it is far superior. It inflates my tires quickly and is comfortable to use.

I do think that this pumps does a good job of getting my tires up to pressure fir its size.:)I think there could be a few more metal parts that would make this product far more durable for only little added weight. An aluminum head cap and a machined screw top for the plunger assembly. When I pull the plunger too far, the entire assebly comes out because it just snaps into the air shaft with plastic parts. :(

It pumps air great for a smaller pump, about 1/2 psi average in my 2.1 tires. However, as is pointed out in the other reviews it is a bit quirky. I can live with the quirks, however, I can't stand the plastic head cap. I broke mine the first time I used the pump. I have a rebuild kit with a new cap, and am going to try to get a replacement via warranty (Its lifetime, bless Blackburn). Here is what I propose, call Blackburn at 800-456-bell and ask them to make an aluminum (heat treated) head cap. For future pumps and as a replacement part! Topeak is using them on their pumps, why not Blackburn? Use you power as a consumer! % stars if it had a metal cap, 3 stars until then (what good is a broken pump?)

I've flatted a few times lately and this pump has definitely bailed me out. For it's small size, it sure fills up tires quickly, getting me up to 50 psi in no time. The frame mount hardware didn't fit my bike very well but that's fine 'cause I keep it in my Blackburn Hydrapak anyhow. By far the best mini-pump I've ever used. I used to resort to Zefal. Bleccch!Get one. You'll be happy you did some day!

This is a great pump, it moves air very efficiently and smooth. I had problems with the seals and the pump wouldn't force air into the tube, instead it leaked out the other end. I went to my local bike shop and they replaced it for free since it's guarenteed for life. I've had no problems since, now only if that stupid handle pin would stay in place.

I bought one for two simple reasons, the heavey-duty aluminium tubing and the unlimited warranty. The pump worked fine for a while, mix in mud and dust and soon it leaked... ALLOT! to make matters worse, it was hit by a rather large rock which dented the heavy-duty aluminium! On the plus side, I got the complete pump replaced under warranty and now I store it on my camel-bak where it cant get hit!3 for use, plus one for the best warranty I've seen (might only be New Zealanders that are so generous!)

The pump is great for the fact it is generally of good quality and the price is reasonable. The machined barrel is a nice touch to save weight and keep with the Blackburn quality. The seals work fine and it is truly rebuildable. The pump does pump big air ... for a mini-pump. The facts are, it still takes considerable time and effort to pump up a fatty with this pump. The thumblock works well and is of good quality aluminum so I have no worries of it breaking but it has developed play and I don't like that. A good pump but still some room for improvement.

Going against trends for this pump, I'm giving it 1 star. From the day it was new, it never seated well over a Schraeder valve. The plastic insert inside the head was too small- the threads of the valve stem would actually tear it up. Once on, though, it worked great, until... It started to pour air out the back when under pressure. I bought a rebuild kit, replaced all the innards. Still didn't fit on valves right, still leaked. (The aluminum barrel was not bent) I tossed it aside, went out and bought a Mt. Zefal Mini Double Shot.

I've had my pump for a while now and it still works as good as the day I got it. One problem, after vigerous pumping, sometimes the pin inside of the handle slips out and you have to fix it before pumping again. Other than that it pumps fast and it's light.

To date, this is the best mini-pump I've used. It works smothly and fills rapidly. It is strong yet light and is covered by an excellent warranty. My only concern is the lack of a locking handle. It would be VERY easy to have some type of twist-lock to keep the handle in place when not in use. It would be nice if Blackburn would include an extra mounting strap for those who do not want to/can't mount it with the included PLASTIC bracket. Other than that, it serves its purpose well. When anyone asks me which pump I would recommend, I always respond -- the Blackburn Mammoth. If the handle would lock in a closed position it would rate a 5 plus from me. P.S. My wife purchased it for my birthday for $29.00.

I've had this pump for about five months now and have found it to be an awsome pump. It's light as a feather and durable to boot. It's easy to clean too which realy helps cause the trails in Georgia are grime city man. one way to keep the pin on the swivel handle from sliding out is to put a drop of super glue on each end of the pin on the !outside! of the handle. I'd say this is the best pump out there and except for the pin I havn't had any problems with it. I give five red hot tongue scorchers.

I bought this pump some months ago, however I'm glad I waited until now to post a reveiw. Yes, the pump body is beefy, and the clamping clip is even made out of metal, and yet the ring that the valve stem clamps into, is constructed out of plastic. This is the part of my pump which broke. The end of the cap broke out and sat in my hand as I contemplated what I was going to do to get air into my tire. What good are light weight parts(or accessorys, such as pumps) if they are broken? This is a stressed point of contact and yet it is made out of plastic, I don't understand. I would certainly pay an extra dollar or two for a metal tightening ring. If I'm ranting and raving its because this is the part of the pump that breaks every time, and yet the part is made out of plastic. Hmmmm, maybe I have a future in industrial design after all, it can't be that hard to design a durable pump, just use the right materials. Hey Blackburn , do you need any help designing frame pumps?... I'm torn, I would have given the pump a 4 stars up until now,but what good is a broken 4 star pump?

I've had my Mamouth Pump for almost a year now. It fills tires faster than any other mini-pump I've ever used. Problems so far include... 1. The handle keeps falling off - (The pin slips.) 2. Sometimes it won't pass air. (This is a recent problem and I can usually make it work by disassembling the pump head and re-assembling it.) I like this pump. I've never had a mini-pump that was without problems, and this one is no different.

This is the BEST pump I have ever used. I don't care how much it weighs or costs because the damn thing really works. This is a real pump for real mountain bikers. During my group rides every weekend there is at least one pinchflat or snakebite. I don't fix all the flats myself but I do lend my Mammoth pump to whoever had the flat. I cannot estimate how many times I have used this pump, but believe me, I've used it a lot. After one year of heavy use, my pump is still working like new. Adecquate pressure for a tire is obtained in about 60 pumps and there is no limit to the pressure you can get with this pump. Try to match this with a mini-pump!

This pump is okay, I guess. For 30 freakin' bucks I was expecting perfection, ya know? I have to clip the pump in its holder handle side up to keep the handle from disengaging (which it would invariably do on a ride) and extending. The handle pin has almost worked itself loose twice. Last gripe: the notch in the handle that allows it to fold fills up with mud quickly. Anyway, it pumps well. Let's see how long it lasts.

This is probably the best mini-pump you can buy. Definitely inflates better than any other mini-pump. The velcro strap eliminates any possibility if the pump falling off your bike during a ride. The only problem is that I seem to always bend the presta valves on my tires, they still work however. If you disassemble it, make sure to screw it back together securely. I didn't and the handle unscrewed itself and fell off, never to be found again. The bike store replaced it for free, though, so it was cool.

Nice pump. It locks on the valve well and moves a lot of air. The T-Bar grip helps sweaty hands pump. The mounting system (with velcro) is well thought out. The only thing I don't like is that I had to put a section of tube over the handle to keep in place while riding, otherwise it comes loose of the click-stop and starts extending.
