$3.00 | | Purchased At: | The only little store for groceries in Reifnitz, Austria back in August 2002 | | Strengths: | Povides energy. | | Weaknesses: | Carbonated and hard to glug down in one go. Tastes way, way to sweet. In night clubs (in the past) when mixed with vodka, dancing, more vodka and more dancing it lead to multiple heart attacks/death. | | Similar Products Used: | Horse Power | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk | | Bottom Line: | I finaly found this product while on summer vacation back in August 2002 - Hungary(Budapest) & Austria(Reifnitz) just after the 2002 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix. The small lakeside town of Reifnitz has (back in 2002) one tiny grocery store just after/past "The Sport Hotel". The road comes to a fork, I'm pretty sure it's the left road that you just need to travel on it a few 100 meters. They also sold Horsepower here and apparently the town is only open during the summer months as snowfall accumulates during the winter. The husband (co-owner) of "The Sport Hotel" passed away before 2002, R.I.P. The hotel may still be for sale. Bottom Line: A very, very sweet tasting carbonated drink that's enjoyed by few. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1.00 | | Purchased At: | everywhere, now | | Strengths: | taste. I admit, I really like the taste. Most hate it. Incredible pre-ride energy boost, like Coke without the carbonation, or nosebleeds. I drink it on the way to the trail and start using a carb gel and hydration drink about 10 minutes into the ride. This does have a small kick of caffiene in it which could make things worse if you aren't properly hydrated beforehand. I usually skip it and use plain water pre-ride if the weather is really hot and humid. | | Weaknesses: | Like coke, the naughty kind, addictive and expensive. You can get it much cheaper from Sam's, just like Coke, the legal kind. It's about 1.36/can when bought by the case. I'm investigating how much cheaper it is when bought by the trailer load. | | Similar Products Used: | coca-cola, diluted OJ, gatorade, cytomax (gross!), every other imitation of Red Bull which all taste terrible and use cheap ingredients. | | Bike Setup: | Trek 8000, SID XL, Crossmax, mish-mash of LX and Ritchey parts - reliable and cheap. | | Bottom Line: | The best energy drink out there - proven by all the cheap domestic imitators. There is no substitute. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

my co workers hate the smell, but they're all a@*holes, so i always keep an open can of red bull around to torment them.

$2.00 | | Purchased At: | All Over | | Strengths: | Good for a mental lift | | Weaknesses: | Not that great for riding | | Similar Products Used: | Up Time | | Bike Setup: | Bontrager Race with custom build | | Bottom Line: | I do like this product, and started using it as a pre-ride beverage. I'm not so sure it's that great, but later I started using it while working. When you're getting ready for a long day, or a stressful one, I think this stuff makes you a bit sharper and less fatigued. So I use it now for the mental not physical effects.
I just discovered something new, and that's why I'm writing this review. I had 3 cans sitting in my riding bag for something over a year, and when I picked it up today it was a mess. All 3 cans developed some very tiny holes around the base of the can, and the contents of them began slowly leaking out. The holes were not very apparent, but when I squeezed one of the cans that was still partially full, I could see a small bit escaping.
So, the first bit of advice is to rotate your stock, and don't let these sit around too long. Now the question is, what's in the stuff that causes it to eat through the can, and how is that for a human? Also, I'm concerned about using a product that has some level of partially dissolved can material in it. The final thing, be careful about spilling this stuff on your Cannondale!

The other thing I have found is that it doesn't leave you down when the caffein wears off...you just return to normal. I love mixing this stuff with alcohol. Here in Europe you get this stuff everywhere and every club sells it mixed with vodka. What a rush. All the raver/techno freaks live on this tuff. The caffeine kick is huge. I wouldn't dare drink this stuff though while riding. It's just caffeine. I rather have a Met-Rx bar or a Clif bar. Save this stuff for the evening when you're getting loaded, putting back all those caloeries via alcohol into your system which you spent the whole day trying to get rid of while riding. Don't ever make the mistake of buying the Flying horse stuff they sell over here in Germany though. Both of these products are originally from Austria and in Austria you can still get them with the original Taurine content which was banned here in Germany. Anyway, bought the Flying Horse stuff while in Austria, it tastes like sh*t and had me buzzing for hours. Avoid it unless you're the type who likes to mix ecstacy and alcohol which will simply allow this stuff to mix nicely with your repertoire. | Overall Rating: |
