Date Reviewed: February 6, 2009
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Safeway
Strengths:Numerous fantastic flavors to choose from. I prefer the Oatmeal Raisin and Peanut Butter flavors.
Gives you a full and satisfied feeling with no bloating.
Healthy amount of fiber (if you know what I mean).
Easy to find and reasonably priced.
Weaknesses:Can be tough to chew when cold. Just warm it in your hands while in package before opening.
Similar Products Used:Detour Bars
Bike Setup:Trek 4300
Bottom Line:I wouldn't recommend any other bar if you're looking to satisfy any hunger pangs.

Bike Setup:Two wheels
Bottom Line:Tried one for the first time today and it tastes awesome. Im a picky eater and hate everything organic especially the chocolate so I was a bit skeptical but the chocolate isn't organic so it tasted great. I agree it needs to be washed down with water but who doesn't bring water while biking?

Date Reviewed: June 3, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Krogers
Strengths:Compact, dense, relatively healthy, tasty, filling. Goes well with water or coffee.
Weaknesses:A little dry, but added moisture would make it fall apart so it's not really a weakness.
Similar Products Used:Powerbar and McDonald's Quarter pound Texas Double Cheeseburger
Bike Setup:Motobecane 300HT - completely stock
Bottom Line:I don't run or ride distances long enough to justify eating a Cliff bar while I'm out. So instead, I eat these mostly at the office when I'm too busy to leave my desk for lunch.

I like to buy the variety box which contains Chocolate Chip, Crunchy PB, and Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch. The Chocolate Chip is my number 1 pick!

Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Performance, Sports Basement
Strengths:Great taste, consistency. Fills you up. Easy to chew, moist. Price is affordable.
Weaknesses:Try the flavors....some of them are funky and you probably will hate some of them. I first tried the chocolate chip and it's probably my favorite, don't think I could eat the pumpkin flavor on a regular basis!
Similar Products Used:Powerbar, Gu
Bottom Line:Back in the early nineties when I was a kid and started mountain biking in Marin, we had Powerbars. You chewed the nasty junk and put up with the awful taste. It was just assumed that taste and texture were to be overlooked in favor of extra strength during a ride. There wasn't any options other than candy bars (which frankly were more satisfying!) Having your teeth almost get pulled out from your skull eating a Powerbar was lame.

Then Clif bars came along and I never looked back. They have a huge amount of flavors, find your fave and enjoy. If you don't want to bring whole food with you on a ride, pack these and some water.

Make sure you wash it down with water.

Weaknesses:taste and texture! ...oh and its a bit bulky

Bike Setup:who cares
Bottom Line:bottom line is that this thing is like eating right out of the horse trough back yonder in the barn. i could barely gag this down with any beverage. cant remember which flavors we tried but we only tried two which was more than enough for me. you can chew these for hours and the consistency just gets worse and worse. i guess id just rather gag on a Power Bar is all. just was dissapointed after hearing about them.

Strengths:These bars work great. I take one about 20mins before the trail and I have enough juice to make it without fading too much.
Weaknesses:Some flavors need to be choked down... choc chip, choc peanut chip.
Similar Products Used:Balance Bars Gold.
Bike Setup:02 Giant Yukon, XT do-dads
Bottom Line:Better flavers are carrot cake, lemon poppyseed, cookies'n'cream. Easy to digest and they work well. If your new to biking, this bar is probably the one best good thing you can start with. Can't go wrong with trying one, but do yourself a favor and try one of the mentioned better tasting bars.

Strengths:Tastes better than most energy bars, fills ya up, goo digestion, easy on stomach.

Bike Setup:2003 Santa Cruz Blur, 04 XTR, 5th Element Air, Easton Carbon Cockpit, Thompson Stem, Python Air Lights, Mavic 317's, Eggbeater SS, Stans NoTubes.
Bottom Line:This is an exellent, easilt available energy bar. Because it is naturally made, it makes you feel better. It is a bit heavy on the stomch so you need some liquid to wash it down. Not that expensive. great ratio between carbs , protein and fat.

Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Vitamin Shop, LBS and other places
Strengths:Tastes great, Easy to digest, Dosen't melt like other ones do, Not that expensive like some other ones, great fuel when your feeling drained out and have a long road back.
Weaknesses:Looks like what I ride on (Dirt), Sometimes hard to find now that the secret is out about them tasting great.
Similar Products Used:Powerbar, Balance, Powershot, Powerbar Harvest and Metrex
Bike Setup:Is this for an energybar or bike parts who cares!
Bottom Line:This is the best energy bar out there it tases good and it dosen't feel like dead weight in your stomach. I only eat these now and have given up on the others out there. Powerbar tastes like dirt, melts and gets sticky when it get hot. Metrex foodbars are good but they sit in your stomach like lead and make you feel sick during a long ride in the heat. So far it like the crunchy peanut butter, peanut butter chocalate chip and cookies and cream. Buy them down at vitamin shop by the case and you get them for a dollor a bar instead of a dollor firty and a box lasts a while. PEACE!

Bike Setup:Devinci Kingpin - awesome!
Bottom Line:These are the bars that saved me from choking on PowerBars so many years ago. They are a bit more filling than the Clif Lunas, but they make for a good "lunch" bar when one is on an epic ride. They require a bit of water to digest, but you should be hydrating anyway.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:LBS, 7-11, grocery store etc
Strengths:Tastes great! I especially like the Carrot Cake flavor. Good for sustained energy. They're easy to find. Around here, all 7-11's carry clif bars and most of the grocery stores do too. Tastes WAY better than a powerbar. Doesn't melt either!
Weaknesses:It's ugly. Almost scary the first time you try one.
Similar Products Used:Powerbar, Luna Bar, GU.
Bike Setup:What? I'm reviewing a Clif bar damnit
Bottom Line:What more can I say? They're good energy bars than taste great and are easy to come by. I'll never eat a powerbar again. With powerbars, you need them to be at room temperature to be edible. Too hot, they melt. Too cold and they're hard as a rock. Not with Clif bars. Edible in any temperature!

Submitted by Ollie a Cross Country Rider from Burbank, CA, USA
Date Reviewed: July 30, 2002
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Trader Joe's
Strengths:Doesn't melt, more natural than most energy bars and more covenient than a bag of trail mix. Stamped with a use by date.
Weaknesses:Different flavors have vastly different caloric/ nutritional content.
Similar Products Used:Powerbar, luna bar, balance bar, pria, fig newtons etc...
Bike Setup:SC superlight
Bottom Line:Out of all the energy bars out there, clif is superior. They don't look pretty as other reviewers commented but they are filling, taste good, nd don't melt in my pack like other energy bars. They also don't have that artificial vitamin taste....I feel like I'm actually eating something healthy. They are also relatively cheap compared to other products. I usually get them for about $0.90.

One minor complaint that keeps me reading the labels is that the calories vary from flavor to flavor by a significant amount. The apricot is one of the lowest cal flavors while choco chip peanut crunch is one of the higher cal flavors. Makes sense when you think of the ingredients though.

I also like the ICE bars for those mornings that I can't get enough coffee in me before the ride. Unfortunately these bars, like the Clif Luna bars, have some sort of meltable coating and aren't great to take along unless you like licking the wrapper.

4 chilis....5 when they stop looking like crap! :)

Purchased At:Fresh Fields
Strengths:Tastes pretty good
Great energy and recovery
Pretty filling
Doesn't make you sick
Doesn't seem like chewing on cardboard flavored taffy (like Powerbars)
Weaknesses:Looks ... they do say the first bite is with the eyes
Similar Products Used:Powerbar
Bottom Line:These things are great. I've found that my endurance, recovery and even performance are all improved to varying degrees with these. I rode Bike New York this year and only had 1-1/2 of these for the entire day and it was fine. I was never hungry and felt energized throughout the entire ride.

The only real problem is that they look like crap ... literally. The chocolate brownie seriously looks like a cow pie. However, it doesn't taste too bad.

Thanks to everyone below who recommended Cookies & Cream ... it is easily my favorite!!!

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:MEC
Strengths:Good taste, seems to provide all the energy I need for enduros.
Weaknesses:During high exertion efforts, this product becomes too difficult to eat. Because it is relatively soft, I find it too pasty in my mouth. You need a *lot* of water to wash it down during a race.
Similar Products Used:None, thinking of Powerbar if it's a little crunchier/drier.
Bottom Line:Honestly, this is a good bar. For training or epic rides, it totally meets expectations. But I've had too many instances during enduros where I've been very uncomfortable trying to eat this stuff. Not only do I end up consuming more water (cytomax) than I want, but my HR skyrockets because I can't friggin' breath! I've tried smaller intervals (still consuming 1 per hour) and the stuff still somehow ends up lingering around my mouth for hours.

Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Grocery store
Strengths:Oh so delicious. Tons of flavors, you're bound to find one you like. Doesn't sit like a rock in your stomach, no sugar buzz, easily digested, gets the energy to you quick.
Weaknesses:More expensive than the classic banana/bagel combo.
Similar Products Used:Any and all, these are the best in my opinion, both for taste and functionality
Bike Setup:XC
Bottom Line:Very good energy bars. Even people who don't like energy bars could like these. Lots of vitamins, good flavor, plenty of protein. But in my opinion, we'd all be better off sticking to the natural stuff- fruits and bread. If you want the extra vitamins, take a multi-vitamin before your ride. If you want the protein, make some beef jerky in your oven. If you like to spend money Clif bar is the way to go.

Bottom Line:Hubby and I have been using Clif Bars for about three years now, since we first discovered them at Yosemite's Village Store. The best thing about them is that they are like a big cookie. Lotsa good stuff like fiber and now soy protein. I think the most successful flavors are the 'fruit-based' flavors, i.e. Apricot, Berry, Apple-Cranberry. Jim's favorite is Carrot Cake but that is too sweet for me! The Chocolate Brownie is okay, but I just tried the Ginger Snap today, and it was a bit TOO gingery for me. By the way, get 'em at Trader Joes, they are only 89 cents apiece there! Whadda deal, considering Safeway is still selling them for $1.60! (We buy 'em by the box for a little over 10 bucks!) I believe Costco carries them as well but at Trader Joe's you can mix and match the flavors. I give the value rating at 5 but only if you go to Trader Joe's to purchase them.

Bottom Line:the cookies/cream bars WERE the best thing i've had in years. a great "solid" food for long rides and great snack/dessert when at home. i was stunned at the taste change after opening/eating a bar i recently purchased from performance. beth, a very friendly clif bar employee, informed me the taste changed when they were more or less forced to switch to soy protein from brown rice protein. the taste is noticeably chalky in spite of having more sugar than the original bar. i've been searching all over to find the old bar--the new one doesn't taste anything like the old and it seems to take longer to digest. Firstly, let me say that so far, I can't give most any nutrient/fitness bar a 5 chili based on their pricing schemes. Now, let me say that all in all, this is a pretty good bar as far as function goes. By that I mean it serves it's purpose for a good nutrient/energy bar. And, as far as taste, the carrot cake one is pretty good. I would have to say that it's one of the best bars, if not the best because of the combination of function/taste.One important note though, this bar uses a relatively high proportion of animal product. Generally speaking, I'm a vegetarian, meaning, I don't usually eat animal products, and I rarely eat dairy products. I found that these bars bothered my stomach slightly after a while. In other words, if you are a pure vegetarian, or lactose in-tolerant, or both, this bar is not for you.

As for the vegans. Why ask cliff bar to tamper with a good thing. I am
a health/humane conscious vegetarian(8 yrs) and enjoy this bar, you have options
exercise your rights and stick with the cliff bar formulations you have
enjoyed for so long. I am not associated with clif bar in any way- i just love
the new carrot cake flavor. Keep it up Clif Bar.

Bottom Line:

We are both Vegans, and we highly regard Cliff Bar Corp. for providing Dairy-free products; however, with regards to atleast two new flavors (Carrot Cake and Cookies-in-Cream), Cliff Bar has added milk powder--- WHY the change? Specifically when soy/rice substitutes exist? It is very difficult to find companies which recognize the needs of conscious consumers, and we hope that Cliff Bar continues to evaluate their current choice of their products and respect the voices of their customers.

Bottom Line:

Cliff Bars rule! They are like real food, they aren't gooey and you won't lose a filling trying to eat one. I love the flavors, especially the apricot ones! I like the fact that you can get ones with a resonable protien quanity because in addition to biking 4 to 5 times a week, I lift weights 5 to 6 times a week and need to have some protien with every meal. The one problem some people might have with a Cliff bar is drinking enough water. The human body can only asorb so many grams of carbohydrates per so much water. (I can't remember the ratio.) Power bars are formulated with this in mind. They have a higher moisture content and are formulated to be quicker digesting for faster energy without having you body spend as much energy and internal water digesting. This may lead to the thirstyness and sometimes indigestion. So, eat slowly and drink a lot of water, or eat it before the ride and use Clif Shot or GU during the ride. I LOVE CLIF BARS, 5 CHILIS!

Bottom Line:

The thing that I like best about the Clif Bars is the variety. Not only does this encompass the flavor selection; it also gives you a choice of carbs, fat, and protien. The macronutrient ratio is not the same for all flavors. An added bonus is on those long early morning winter and spring rides you don't have to bring a chisle to eat one. Oh yea, I almost forgot, they taste better than any other bar on the market.

Two words: REAL FOOD! That's what Clif Bars taste like. Not some processed crap (e.g., PowerBars). It's the kind of snack bar that you can eat at anytime. I've often eaten Clif Bars for lunch and felt quite satisfied. Comes in many flavors and taste great!
Hey, Mikey likes it!
5 Chilis, baby!
