No more chain ring tattoos and my drive system has never stayed this clean for this long. | | Weaknesses: | It's not free and I keep checking to see if my chain is still attached | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning, Prolink, Finishline crud, purple extreme, Pedros Dry and practically everything else under the sun | | Bike Setup: | GF X-Cal 29er, thomson stem and seatpost, easton Monkeylite SL, Stans notube arches on Hope Pro 2 hubs, Sram XO derailleurs and XO gripshifts | | Bottom Line: | This review is for RnR Gold. I've used the extreme and it just doesn't perform in the long run as well as the Gold in the dry and dusty conditions in which I ride. This is hands down the best lube ever invented for a bicycle chain and drive. I use high end components on my bikes and this stuff has reduced wear on my chain, rear cassette, and front rings also. Just don't apply it over the rear cassette like the instructions say.... I don't want any kind of solvent to get near my hub seals or grease! When I switch to winter gear on my bike, I switch to purple extreme and rock that for three or so months where we have lots of moisture. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

No big deal to go numerous rides with no reapplication. It leaves no build up on the chain or cassette, just a little on the jockey wheels of the derailuer, which doesn't cause any problems.
I am done trying different lubes, I just use this one.

$18.00 | | Purchased At: | direct from RnR | | Strengths: | Simply works. Keeps the chain clean in all but the very worst conditions. Mud, sand, grit of everytype from NE trails - doesn't matter - my chain is still much cleaner at the end of the ride than with any other oil/lube I've used - and I've tried just about all. I agree with the posting of another when they said this stuff extended the life of his cassette. I know for a fact that I've seen longer life out of my drivetrain since using this stuff. And so easy to use - squirt it on, wipe it clean. Done.
| | Weaknesses: | You do have to reapply it on longer rides (usually - but that's true for nearly every other lube - and this doesn't gum up your chain/cassette the way oils do! | | Similar Products Used: | All the "ice"wax stuff; Finishline, Pedro's, etc. None compare. | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Klein Adept Race Disc - 6 years of trails and still running strong. | | Bottom Line: | Simply the easiest, cleanest, and best chain lube. $7.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Cleans, degreases chain on application. Lube sets up clean like wax, but chain runs like it's oil. Easy cleaning when re-applying It's relatively cheap. I would give it more than five flamin chilis on value if I could. | | Weaknesses: | I would always like to have a lube last longer, but this is definitely one of the best I've used, and I have tried a ton of others. | | Similar Products Used: | All of the finishline lubes. All of the white lightning variations. A few obscure brands. | | Bike Setup: | Turner 5Spot, SRAM, Rock Shox etc | | Bottom Line: | One of the best damn lubes I've tried to date. A buddy at the LBS recommended it and, having gone through a few months of trying every brand and type I could get my hands on, I was very skeptical.
It boils down to this: follow the instructions. Used properly this stuff works as well as many oil-based lubes I've tried (smooth, silent chain---almost feels like it's not there) but without the mess. Cleanup and reapplication is painless. The only downside is that it is something of a wax based lube so it does need to be reapplied more frequently than oil would. IMHO, if you're taking care of your drivetrain this doesn't matter. All that being said, one application does last quite a while longer than other waxy lubes, even in dusty conditions.
Since it's relatively cheap, don't hesitate to pick up a bottle and give it a try.

After 4 years if using White Lightning a certain LBS recommended I try RnR Extreme. Wow. White Lightning cakes up the chain so thick and heavy that even degreaser/elbow grease and a good chain cleaner find it hard to remove. This used to take in on average 15 - 30 min. While the RnR Extreme provides similar lube "experience" cleaning is done with a brush - I kid you not! Just brush and then wipe the lube off your chain and cassette before applying new lube. 5 minutes tops. This probably saves me hours of chain cleaning in a typical year.
I should mention that I'm riding the dusty trails of SoCal so it might not work as well in the Pacific NW for example.
Buy some and try it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I would say worth it cause it sustains the drivetrain better. Got to store it in a warm place. No biggy. | | Similar Products Used: | Dumonde both reg/lite, finish line. | | Bike Setup: | Dually and 2 ht'. | | Bottom Line: | Pleased with its ability to clean and lube. I put more on after each ride cause I get the drivetrain dirty here in Washington. I like my drivetrain to last as long as it can. I use this and Dumonde but the RR cleans the chain when reapplied. The Dumonde does just as well as a straight up lube though. I put RR on mid chain like the dude does who posted earlier. I lay it on while spinning the chain backwards. Then just wipe it off. None of that other nonsense like it says to put on. I don't care bout a little drippage and if you are good at applying lube like this there is not much waste. Works for me and it won't degrease other bike parts. I'm giving it a high value rating cause it is adding to the life of my drivetrain. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$17.00 | | Purchased At: | rocklube.com | | Strengths: | Great lube. Easy to apply. Can be bought in larger bottles. | | Weaknesses: | Don't lube on the cassette as it's a degreaser and you don't want grease dissolved from bearings etc. | | Similar Products Used: | Dumondetech, White Lighting, WL Epic, Tri-Flow, Krytech FinishLine, ProLink, ummm....I think that's all! | | Bike Setup: | Kona Kula Deluxe w/SRAM drivetrain (where it counts i.e. RD, shifters, and hopefully front derailleur soon). | | Bottom Line: | I used RocknRoll Gold lube for a year. I was riding 45 miles a day (22.5 one way to work). RnR worked so well that I didn't realize my rear cassette was virtually gone until my chain started skipping big time. I went from being able to ride just fine with an occasioanl skip (once or twice each leg of my commute)for a week to basically not being able to ride my normal gear the next day. I had to shift to my fifth largest cog just to make it home. So essentially I only noticed problems for one week! I looked at my rear cassette once I got home and the teeth on three of the smallest cogs (6,7, and 8) were VERY THIN points. That's how toasted they were. RnR definitely kept me going where other lubes would of have me changing my cassette long ago. Of course some would say I should have changed my cassette long ago but I DIDN'T HAVE TO because of RnR. I've recently just got done testing Dumonde Tech lube because of the great reviews on this site. I'm going to switch back to RnR. It's easier to apply. Comparing the two I would say that they both keep my chain clean to the same degree. With both, after any ride, there is a thin black film that can be wiped off with a towel. You don't actually see it looking at the chain but for any commuters who have ruined their drive side pant legs, ya' know what I mean. Also I think that RnR has lasted longer than the Dumonde Tech on my chain. And yes, I've applied DumondeTech EXACTLY as the intructions curtailed. I'm tired of wiping and wiping and wiping the chain after each DumondeTech application so that it's BONE dry...per instructions. No I didn't overapply DumondeTech, a small drop per link that's all. I've also found that my chain is skipping alot more with DumondeTech. Looking at the chain growth, cassette, and chainring conditions I've ruled those out as the culprits. I think it's just my chains way of letting me know it's time to relube. I just didn't have to relube as much with RnR from my experience. I would compare DumondeTech and ProLink as being roughly the same with DumondeTech having better water resistance and RnR at the top above the other two due to great lubing properties and having the best lubing duration.
Finally keep in mind that I do mostly road riding and commuting on my Kona hardtail. However I have gone trail riding also using RnR and found it works great. I haven't used DumondeTech in trail riding conditions so I can't compare the two in that department. But since MtbReview is the only decent bike product review site out there I figured road riders or commuters would like to know how each performs in their respective environment. So anyway that's my three cents worth (this is a long review =) !!!!!) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Expensive, at least in the smaller bottles. | | Similar Products Used: | All | | Bike Setup: | Hybrid Commuter | | Bottom Line: | I use this on my year round commuter bike. For winter conditions, this is the best self-cleaning lube I've found. You can apply it in low temperature conditions if you keep the bottle warm. It cleans well and really helps shed snow and slush. And it holds up.
Don't apply it the way the bottle says. You will get waxy goop everywhere and the degreasors in it might degrease something they shouldn't.
I apply midchain, holding a disposable shop towel or a couple of paper towels underneath the chain as I apply to catch any overspray. I then use the towel to wipe down the chain when I'm done. This works great. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I love it! | | Weaknesses: | The thing is a b*tch to apply, dont "squirt" it on the cassette as it doesn't work too well. $5.00 | | Purchased At: | pricepoint | | Strengths: | Makes shifting much smoother, one application lasts long time. | | Weaknesses: | Got to be careful not to get lube into linkages, bottom brackets and other places where you have lube. | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning | | Bike Setup: | Rocky Mountain ETSX, Fox Talas, DT Swiss 240's, Mavic 717, SRAM X9, Avid Mechanicals | | Bottom Line: | I recently finished building up a new bike and I was having a lot of problems with shifting. The chain would skip on the cassette whenever I tried to shift while I was going uphill. Plus it just seemed like the shifting was slow. I backed off the pedals when shifting but it did not help. I adjusted the rear derailieur, checked the replaceable hanger etc and the shifting still sucked. Then I decided to change to this lube and the shifting is so much better. Much smoother and no skipping in back. I don't know whats in this lube but it really works. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$5.00 | | Purchased At: | speedgoat.com | | Strengths: | Keeps chain well lubed and clean. Lasts a reasonably long time. | | Weaknesses: | As reviewer below noted, the suggested application method causes the solvents in R&R to dissolve grease in other locations (freehub bearings for me). | | Bike Setup: | '04 GF Tassajara. | | Bottom Line: | This lube works great once applied, but as a reviewer below noted, the suggested application method (steady stream over the cassette) causes the solvents in the lube to seep and dissolve grease in unwanted places (bearings in the freehub for me). I would recommend the following application method: place the bike in a workstand, remove the rear wheel, put a chain keeper in the rear dropout, and apply the lube near the keeper. A bit more of a hassle than with other lubes, but not totally unreasonable. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Just make sure you follow the directions and wipe it ALL off. | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning, TriFlow, Pedro's. | | Bike Setup: | Giant Iguana | | Bottom Line: | It really is the best I've used.
I've had too many crud issues with the other lubes on both my mtn bike and my road bike. This stuff lets me ride without worrying if the lube will last or crap up. I can go three 3-4 hour sloppy, messy rides without having to relube. The best part is I never have to use the chain cleaner inline thingie or remove the chain for a soak. If the chain is a bit gritty, I just apply more lube and wipe.
It made shifting much smoother on my lousy Iguana drive-train too. That was a big plus! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Still works better and lasts longer than anything I have ever used in extreme riding conditions, wet or dry.
Two 16oz. bottles lasted me three years and two months of riding at least twice a week, so my original complaint about price per volume isn't really valid. | | Weaknesses: | Not easily available at LBS. | | Similar Products Used: | Ice Wax, T-9, ProLink, TriFlow, others | | Bottom Line: | The new Extreme formula is a bright blue color that is so aesthetically pleasing I had to resist taking a swig.
It works better than the old formula in extremely dusty conditions, only attracting a thin layer of dust over the five or six rides I put in between applications.
Haven't had a chance to use the new formula in wet conditions, but I suspect it will be every bit as good as the older version. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$16.00 | | Purchased At: | AUD$22.95 for 16oz. at www.phantomcycles.com.au | | Strengths: | - Awesome chain lube, mainly because it's my first bike specific chain lube. - Works as a chain lube should: smooth, non-dirt-attracting, durable. - Easier to apply than say... a wax lubricant. | | Weaknesses: | - Because of it's easy-to-apply chracteristics, it contains a hack of lot solvents to allow to lube to get into the chain links where it become a 'wax' in the links, when you wipe the exterior clean. The solvents dissolved my bearing grease, so when the instructions say to lube the chain on the bike, I say lube it off the bike to avoid dissolving grease in bearings, ratchet, etc... | | Similar Products Used: | Nulon NuLube, WD-40, Silicon lube | | Bottom Line: | Kick-ass chain lube, for 16oz. is plenty for a long time.

from Salt Lake City, UT Date Reviewed: July 9, 2004 | | Duration Product Used: | 2 Years | | Strengths: | Lasts for several rides. Keeps the chain quiet. A bottle lasts a good while. Does not attract dust--my favorite dry weather lube. | | Weaknesses: | Kind of a pain to apply. | | Similar Products Used: | Dumonde, Tri-Flow, White Lightning. | | Bike Setup: | A bike with a chain. | | Bottom Line: | This is my favorite dry, dusty weather lube. It keeps the chain clean even riding through a dust bowl. It lasts for several rides (over 3). And you clean and lube the chain in one step.
The worst thing about this lube is that it's a pain to apply. You need water around to spray it off, and that can be inconvienent, especially when you're on a trip away from home. After each application, it leaves a waxy residue on the drivetrain (especially the pulley wheels, cogs, and chainrings) that is a pain to clean. I make it easier to clean that gunk off by shifting my chain to the biggest chainring and littlest cog before applying and by NOT applying the lube over the cogset as they recommend.
All in all, it's a fantastic dry, dusty climate lube. If it wasn't so inconvenient to apply, it'd be perfect. As it is, I wholeheartedly recommend it, and I haven't found anything better for what I ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Look no further. Takes this little story for what it is worth; Every year I do this little 600 KM seven day MTB race from Fernie, BC to Canmore, AB called the TransRockies. I started using Rock Lube the second year (last August) that I did this race. The first year, no matter what I used for lube, I had to carry a small squeeze bottle with me (rain, snow, horrendous mud, dusty, dry...every condition imaginable) becuase I was plagued with chain issues almost every stage.
This past year, conditions were extremely dry and dusty, with all the wildfires that had been burning in the area, and lack of rain. Dust like I've never seen it before. One morning, upon getting my bike back from the tech's, I was too tired to apply Rock lube and figured that whatever the tech's used, that would be good enough.... (That's the problem with this stuff.... you take it for granted after al while and forget about how well it works!). I did make sure that they had given the chain a fresh lube. Big mistake! My chain was bone dry and snapped 5 miles from the finish of a 60 mile stage. Whatever they used couldn't stand up to Rock Lube appplied daily on the two 90+ mile stages, one 30 mile stage, and one 45 miles stage prior to that.
I used the Gold on my road bike, and that is equally impressive. However, you never really get to put your road bike through the same stress as a 600KM mtb race.
I buy mine direct from rocklube.com - Cut to the chase and get the 16 oz bottles. You have to use this stuff liberally, just like the directions say. And don't forget to shake it up before you apply!

The liquid evaporates quickly and the grease is left in places that only liquid can usually get to.(like the rollers of a chain) | | Weaknesses: | Really Cacky!!! This is not as advertised, a dry weather lube. Sure the chain looks nice and clean, and you can wipe of what might be on the surface of the chain but the sides of the jockey wheels and the chain rings are completely covered in dust which has been attracted by the thin grease residue. | | Similar Products Used: | WD40. It's as if the chain repels dirt and gunk build up. I don't quite know how this comes about but the proof is that when I previously have put my chain through my chain cleaner filled with warm degreaser (after doing approximately 250 Km = 150 US miles) the fluid almost immediately turned greyish black in colour.
Doing the same procedure with the chain lubed with Rock-n-Roll Gold the result is the opposite, the degreaser fluid looks practically clean. That's how I get the feeling that this stuff actually prevents crap from getting into the chains rollers.
This stuff is long lasting to. And the chain runs super smooth the whole time. I haven't of coarse tried every lube out there, but of the few I have tried (and been perfectly satisfied with at the time) this blows them all away, hands down, no competition. After trying R-n-R for one year there is just no way I'm ever gonna lube any of my chains with anything else but this excellent product (as long as they continue to make it of coarse).

I personally spoke with the manufacturer and followed their recommendation: adhere to the instructions TO THE LETTER. Don't read anything into them. Apply a steady stream of the product to the chain at the top of the cogs, spin for 5 seconds then wipe of the excess. Your chain will look as good as new and will not throw fresh lube all over your tire and stays unlike Tri Flow. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

So I wanted to check out the site. I got a bit "PO'ed" to see someone, who must be from Dumonde Tech try and play on coat tails of the best lube for bicycles ever made. I'll tell everyone reading this review, I ride a lot and all my friends ride a lot also. I have to force myself many times to not ride and study to keep my grade avg. up to stay in school, yea I live to ride. I've tried every lube under the sun, and none of them even comes close to rock n' roll. Use this lube and you will never use anything ever again. The lube being the best thing out there, and being so is a bit different to apply so read the directions. Everyone of of us here at UC that ride together all use Extreme and some use the Gold, and wouldn't even think of useing anything else. $8.00 | | Purchased At: | Rock'N'Road | | Strengths: | Compared to ProLink - Last longer, provide consistent shifting performance longer, Doesn't attract fine dust or dirt, performs under the wet conditions, chain and rings more silent when pedalling. | | Weaknesses: | Compared to ProLink - Not as smooth or silent when shifting, not as "dry" or invisible. Being typically being wax based can be a little messy when applying, especially in cold outdoor weather. The brown color can be unsightly on the chain...no big deal. | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning, ProLink....and then some | | Bike Setup: | 2001 GF Sugar 2 | | Bottom Line: | Being a long time user of ProLink, a really great lube, I've set high standards in coming up with Strength and weaknesses.
The application of Extreme provides pretty smooth shifting too, but not as smooth as ProLink...on the other hand, the Extreme maintains that consistent shifting and pedalling smoothness twice as long as ProLink, I don't have to re-apply as often and the chain stays cleaner, except for that brown tint.
Either product is great on normal hardpacked riding, but when the dust start flying, or the elements start pouring and the dirt start kicking around...that's where the Extreme excel for the intended use.
I'm using the RnR Gold lube on my road bike and so far, it's proven to be waaaaaay better then ProLink in keeping my chain and rings shinny clean and smooth. I'm sure it'll do great on my mtnbike too.
Too bad there is no section for RnR Gold lube, I think its a much better product overall then the Extreme version base on intended usage.
Bottomline: I'll stick with RnR lube.

At any rate, regardless of the above, the lube itself has been working amazingly smooth and crisp. I have tried virtually all the Finish line products but this lube goes above all of them: it lasts much longer than F.L. teflon, it retains cleaness so long as the lube is on, it doesn't create the oil mess so quite suitable for commuters/city riders as well, it enables super crips - but not choppy - magnetic shiftings.

The owner/creator Mark is a great guy to talk to when you call. He's very knowledgeable about lubes and will treat you right! Just order the larger bottle because you'll just have to reorder if you get the smaller bottle. He throws in an empty small container so that you can pour the lube from the larger container into it to make it easier to apply. The lube lasts pretty long on the chain although I don't know if it will remain on the chain if you, for example, leave your bike in storage for 3 to 6 months during the winter. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$6.00 | | Purchased At: | Freewheel Bike | | Strengths: | Lasts a very long time through all conditions (water, mud, dust) Chain stays relatively clean Does not need frequent application
| | Weaknesses: | None | | Similar Products Used: | Boeshield Finish Line Cross Country White Lightning | | Bike Setup: | Race Face/SRAM 9.0 SL drivetrain | | Bottom Line: | Boeshield used to be my lube of choice till I found Rock and Roll lubes. I'm not the best maintenance person, and this stuff really lets me apply and forget. I have run this product throught rain and mud, hosed off the bike, and the chain still worked smooth. I can't say the same about Finish Line or Boeshield. It works, plain and simple. Now I wanna try the Rock and Roll Gold lube to see how it works. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$6.00 | | Purchased At: | Moo bike shop | | Strengths: | I've never heard a sound out of my chain and many time I forget to lube it because this stuff works so good, I forget about lube. | | Weaknesses: | None | | Similar Products Used: | I've tried all of them | | Bike Setup: | Cannondale cad 5 w/fatty | | Bottom Line: | I went to Rock N Roll's web site and saw they had a new lube called Gold. I came here to see if anyone posted about it. I saw the post below and couldn't believe someone would say Prolink works the same, I've tried it, not even close. Rock N Roll, is your ticket to never having to ever hassle with your chain ever again. From the first ride you know, you found the right stuff. It works super in dry dusty or wet muddy riding, never any worries. Another big thing I like is it stays clean, so when I put my bike in the back of my car I don't get black gunk on everything, like I did with other lubes, I used to use. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This was my lube of choice, until I ran out, and my LBS didn't sell it so I bought some Prolink and have been equally impressed. Great lube, just wish it was easier to find. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$10.00 | | Purchased At: | FROM ROCK & ROLL | | Strengths: | BRAND NEW ROCK & ROLL GOLD...IT "IS" THE NEW LUBE TO HAVE. CLEAN...CLEAN...QUIET...AND ROCK & ROLL "ROCKS" | | Weaknesses: | ABSOLUTELY NONE THAT I CAN SEE | | Similar Products Used: | ROCK & ROLL DRY AND EXTREME | | Bike Setup: | SEVEN TERES, XTR, RACEFACE WTB | | Bottom Line: | You know lube is a very subjective thing. It is going to get dirty, or flake off, or wear off. Of all the lubes that I have tried...and I have tried them all this is the absolute best. I thought that Rock&Roll's extreme was great, but this blows it away. Just give Rock&Roll a call and order some up, and oh by the way order some grease as well...it is as slick as anything that I have every used. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Last long time even in dusty trails keeps clean. | | Weaknesses: | None | | Bike Setup: | Norco shore | | Bottom Line: | I have tried a lot of products and this is the best! Little hard to find but well worth it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Santa Cruz,CA Date Reviewed: August 25, 2001 | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | Easy to apply, lasts a long time, and doesn't collect nearly as much dust as other lubes. | | Weaknesses: | none | | Similar Products Used: | Most common equivolents | | Bike Setup: | Trek 5200 and Cannondale R600 | | Bottom Line: | I don't see any reason to purchase anything else since using this lube, it does all I need plan and simple. It can be a little hard to find but is well worth the look. As a side note I recently lubed up my mountain bike after some months off I thought I would try a more substantial lube so I tried some tri flo and found that it didn't even last through my first ride and my chain has a lot of dust on it. When I use Rock n' Roll I don't have to worry about relubing for at least a few rides in heavy dust or deep puddles. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It's not goopy, it goes on easily, you dont have to wait 24 hours for it to dry (T-9), it lasts. Really lasts. I also use it on my road bike which sits on a trainer for most of the time. So far one application has lasted for weeks. Haven't tested it yet in really wet conditions. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$5.00 | | Purchased At: | bike sport shop | | Strengths: | The best lube ever | | Weaknesses: | none | | Similar Products Used: | various lubes | | Bike Setup: | 96 Bontrager Race with XT and a Judy | | Bottom Line: | I never thought changing my lube would make such a noticeable difference, every other time I switched the differences were barely noticeable at best. A buddy of mine at a shop that I worked had used it and would always talk about how good it was, I didn't think any chain lube would make that much difference, a few months later I found a shop that carried it. On my first ride with Rock and Roll the difference was immediate; my chain was as smooth as glass. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$20.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Keeps the chain really clean. Easy to use. Stands up well to all riding conditions. | | Weaknesses: | A bit on the expensive side for the quantity. | | Similar Products Used: | ProLink, T-9, Ice Wax, White Lightening | | Bottom Line: | Of all the lubes I have used, this one works better and longer than any of the others. A good dose on the chain, spin a few times, and wipe as much off as possible. The chain comes pretty clean almost immediately, and generally stays that way. The lube lasts a long time and doesn't dry out very fast, even in desert conditions. In wet and muddy conditions, survives quite a bit longer than the others. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
