Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $4.00
Purchased At:aebike
Strengths:Goes on easy, doesn't pick up much dirt, works very well in dry conditions.
Weaknesses:Does not work in wet conditions. Period.
Similar Products Used:finish line
Bike Setup:all weather Birdy
Bottom Line:If you stay out of the rain, this lube works very well. I recently did a 500+km tour mostly on dry dusty dirt roads and was pleasantly surprised to find almost no chain wear despite very obvious grittiness in the drive train. I was afraid that once I got home I would find the chain toast but it was just fine.

Same can't be said about wet rides. Did a 420km Audax ride, most of it through intermittent rain an wet roads. Before the ride, I checked the chain, no wear. After the ride, checked again, shock! Chain totally toast, completely way past worn. ONE RIDE! I didn't have the chance to continually re-lube during this ride. (Who would?)

So if you ride in the wet, immediately clean the chain and relube.

It's pretty expensive stuff but lasts quite long.

I give it 3 chilis for value and 3 for overall because it totally loses its protection during wet rides, despite the manufacturer claims; for dry riding, it shines.

Date Reviewed: October 3, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Good at everything
Weaknesses:Still requires application.
Bottom Line:Having used most lubes out there and having worked in a shop for a long time. the fact that this lube makes it onto my bike says quite a bit.

Pro link is the golden standard by which all other chain lubes are judged.

That said I have yet to find a perfect chain lube so this lube is not about to get five chilis.

Purple extreme is in my opinion a better wet weather chain lube than prolink. however I prefer Prolink in the dry. that said I am going to try a sample of Squirt chain lube I was given.

Prolink is certainly a good choice. that said there may be one or two that are better.

Oh if you add a piece of aerosol sprayer nozzle tube to the bottle nipple applying lube becomes an easier precision processes

Submitted by Mike D a Weekend Warrior from Cincinnati, Ohio
Date Reviewed: April 19, 2008
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $6.00
Purchased At:Ebay
Strengths:Lasts for a long time. Repels water like crazy. Don't need to apply before every ride. Cleans and lubes at the same time. Can be used as a wet or dry lube according to the riding conditions.
Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:Pedro's Ice Wax
Bike Setup:2004 Specialized Rockhopper
Bottom Line:Using this lube will bring your chain back to life. Gears will shift smoothly and accurately. I find myself looking down to make sure it did shift because I won't feel or hear anything as with other lubes. I also use it to lube my cables, it works great.

I am done searching for the right lube. I am no longer going to waste my time or money on bad products that only last for 10 minutes. Now I enjoy the ride instead of worrying if my chain is lubed for the ride or not. I only need to apply it about 3 rides or so.

People say that it smells, but I really don't know what they're talking about. It might have a little smell at first application, but after it soaks into the chain it's all good.

And for the price you really can't find a better product. Even the more expensive lubes don't even come close. So don't waste your money on other imitators and get the real thing.

Strengths:Cleans chain, and keeps chain clean.
Weaknesses:none at all.

Bottom Line:I was given a bottle of this stuff a couple years ago, and didn't use it for a while because I was pretty happy with the finish line products, but since trying it I'll definately stick with it. After a couple rides the chain was cleaner than ever and has stayed that way. Of course turpentine might do that too, but the Pro-gold gives good shift. Crisp clean shifts, and the grime doesn't pack up on either the chain or the cassette in even the crappiest conditions.

My riding buddies give me a hard time because my bike is always clean - part of the reason is I use this lube! Keeping the drive train clean is easy, Progold cleans as you use it, so keeping a clean drive train is simple. Keep parts clean and running smooth means less wear and tear on them = a happy bike!

Strengths:Works like gasoline for removing rust oxidation. After two years, I have not see any noticeable wear and tear on the chain.
Weaknesses:Still attract dust where I ride now. Not as bad in some areas.
Similar Products Used:Too long to list; Still using some Finish Lines lube for different purposes.

Bottom Line:I'm doing this just to be the exactly 100's reviewers. Used it for two years and 90% happy with it. The bees wax works great too but it doesn't deal with rust oxidation with the non stainless steel chain on my lower end bikes. It does attract dust where I ride since we have not have rain in months. Lube cleaned out nicely with a little Simple Green.

Bike Setup:Tricked out Santa Cruz Blur XC
Bottom Line:I won't bother re-hashing all the positive remarks from previous posters... they all apply. It's a great product.

What I wanted to say is that this product is absolutely fantastic as a fork strut and shock lube. I thought my forks were performing fine until I wiped a little ProGold ProLink on them, then it was like "WOW.... so this is how they're supposed to work". All of a sudden I was getting sensitive small bump compliance and a beautifully smooth ramp-up the further I got into its travel. In my opinion, don't bother with fork lubes. This stuff is fantastic in terms of performance and what you get for your hard earned dollar... money well spent, with a definite performance return.

Favorite Trail:Wales & Peaks
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $8.00
Purchased At:www.ukbikestore.co.uk
Strengths:Chain stays gunk free
Weaknesses:Very thin so you have to be careful applying or can work out expensive. It only needs to be applied for 1 complete revolution of the chain
Similar Products Used:White lightning wax and wet lube - Finish line wet & dry - GT85 - Rock n roll Extreme - Finesse multi-lube
Bike Setup:Turner 5 Spot, Talas, SRAM X9, RF Atlas, Thomson, Easton, Avid Juicy 7's

Turner Flux, Reba, SRAM XO, RF Deus, Thomson, Easton, Avid Juicy carbons

On-One 853 Inbred, carbon rigids, XO gripshift, X9, Shimano LX crank, Hope mono mini's, On-One finishing kit
Bottom Line:I started using this lube as a summer/dry lube only, but have also now started using it all year round. After really wet muddy rides there is no gunk on the chain and the mud just washes off with water.

The chain needs to be really clean chain before applying it. I just using Muc-Off and then rinse it throughly with water. Once you've done this you don't have to do it again.

One of the comments below said it was poor in summer as dirt/dust stuck to it, this is true if you appply it before a ride but as the instructions say you should lube the night before and let it dry. Then dust doesn't collect on the chain.

Normally I apply the bottle to the cassette for 3turns of the cranks, then backpedal quickly 10-20 times to get it to work it's way in to the chain, then hold a rag at the bottom and spin slowly to take up any excess, then leave to dry.

I also use the pen type luber sometimes to apply it link by link, this also works well.

I apply it after every ride if a really wet/muddy ride or after washing, and around every 3-4 rides if mostly dry.

I also use their EPX grease, perfect for greasing SRAM jockey wheels, no more seizing now :)

Strengths:Thin & watery so application and penetration is excellent. Keeps my chains free of caking grime. Long lasting.
Weaknesses:Thin & Watery, so put down a piece of cardboard before application and apply slowly otherwise you'll leave a lot of it on the floor/cardboard.
Similar Products Used:Pedro's Synlube, Pedro's Ice Wax, Wife's Lipstick, EVOO, Sewing Machine Oil, K-Y, Jello...
Bike Setup:2 x Jamis
Bottom Line:All chains will get dirty - there is no way around that!!!

Follow directions for the application. Always best on freshly cleaned chains.

I keep an eye on the chain and when it starts to show some soft build-up, I soak the chain with ProLink and then immediately wipe it down with lint free cloth. Maybe do that twice if it is real dirty.

I never have a grimey, hard-to-clean chain and I am no where close to a "clean chain" fanatic.

My chains never "grind" like they did with other lubes that seems to attract more dirt/sand than they can cope with.

ProGold's ProLink makes my chains, cassettes and chainrings last longer.

It's sandy and dusty in FL and I am finished with trying other lubes, only to be sadly disappointed to find myself spending way too much time cleaning and lubing the old chains....instead of riding them!

Bottom Line:I feel that Progold/Prolink Chain Lube is the best lubricant for my bicycle needs that I have ever used. The lube keeps my chain greased and repells the dirt as if to guard it from unwanted residue that could slow my performance down. I have used similar products such as WD-40, but that doesn't even compare to the quality and individuality that is provided by Progold. I have recommended this product to many fellow racers and even friends of mine that ride street or trails and they always beg me to get them more and inform me that they don't know how their bicycles have performed without this product! I would strongly suggest that anyone who rides or just owns a bicycle and would like to keep it in the best condition possible to buy this product and keep it around for a lifetime.

Bottom Line:I had to write to tell you how Pro-Link Chain Lube has performed for our teams! At the NBL Grand Nationals in September '02, we were introduced to this product thru a free bike cleaning and lube. Since then, it is the ONLY lubrication that we use. Pro-Link Chain Lube has made our BMX Racing a much more pleasant experience. For those in the Northeast, it has been several years of wet and muddy racing. I can't count the number of races that have been affected by Mother Nature. This product has been a life saver! The chain lube sheds water and dirt like no other. When the rest of the bike is covered in mud, the chain and drive gears are not. I've been involved with this sport since 1987, and have NEVER seen anything like it. I only wish I had discovered it sooner! We have 60 riders on our team, and they ALL love it. I tell everyone about Pro-Link Chain Lube and when someone outside our team asks if I have any lube they can use, boy, do they get an earful! I highly recommend this product to anyone that rides bikes. It is also the Official lube of the National Bicycle League. BMX Racing will be in the 2008 Olympics, and Pro-Link Chain Lube will be there helping to win the GOLD. Sincerely,

Bike Setup:trek vrx 300, softride roadwing roadbike
Bottom Line:You have to understand what a solvent is. This stuff is great, the best is to first remove and clean the chain with something like white lightning cleaner, (a very volatile solvent). Then lube the chain in a plastic bag, and let it sit overnight, and if your really anal about your chain with it freshly lubed heat it up in the oven to about 300 degrees for 30-45 minutes, it expands the metal and allows for better penetration of the lube. Then clean the chain with a non-solvent degreaser like simple green. Now you have a super lubed, low friction, dry chain. Now remember, if you clean the chain with a solvent type degreaser it strips all the lube off, so use simple green or else you have to re-lube. The best citrus degreaser I have found is shimano sludge off, it has a minimal solvent effect but awesome easy cleaning, but beware it kills grass. Therefore use simple green for a mildly dirty drivetrain, as it will not remove any of the lube, however if more severe cleaning is needed, try the sludge off. I have had zero chain/drivetrain wear in over a thousand miles with this strategy.

Bottom Line:Did not live up to my expectations. I started spending more time time cleaning the chain then using it. Seems to collect dirt. After carefully following all the instructions on the bottle, it was applied to a completely clean, sparkling chain, excess was wiped off right after the initial application, and again, after about 10 hours. After a 45-mile ride on smooth, clean roads, the chain turned from silver to black with tons of dust on the cassette cogs! And that metallic smell!!! Didn't quite work for me.
I give it 3 chilis for working on other parts of the bike.

Never here a chain pin & roller squeak even though the chain is dry. I use this stuff on both my road & MTB w/great results. It's the most unique product of its kind on the market at this time.

Bottom Line:This stuff is *magic*! I liked Boeshield just fine, but tried this stuff on a motorcycle-rider's recommendation. Sure enough, the chain stays much cleaner (see application note below) and I only have to relube once in a blue moon. I haven't tried this stuff in wet weather but once, but so far it works great on-road and off-road. I'm also all for the simple no-flash packaging and advertising.. it keeps the stuff cheap. :) Side note: if you like this stuff, try their EPX Cycle Grease, too... very good thick grease for bearings and whatnot... it seems to be just as magical as this stuff.

Application note: I think the people who complain about it attracting dirt or not working well are probably applying it incorrectly. The bottle says you don't have to clean the chain, and they're right, but it'll stay cleaner longer if you start with a nice clean chain. So: dribble the stuff on the chain rollers, wipe off the excess (after all, you only want the lube inside the rollers), and then backpedal the chain round and round. The solvent in this stuff takes a long time to completely dry, so keep wiping off the excess until it's all gone, holding a rag around the chain and pedaling. The chain should feel almost perfectly dry when you're done.

Weaknesses:So far, hasn't lived up to the promise of keeping the chain clean
Similar Products Used:Pedros Extra Dry, White Lighting, TriFlo, Finish Line Dry, Finish Line Wet
Bottom Line:I've been using this product for about 2 weeks and these are my initial impressions. I applied Prolink to a cleaned and degreased chain as the instructions said. The conditions have been dusty around here, and this lube seems to just attract the dust. After the chain got dirty, I tried re-applying the lube and wiping off the excess, thinking that the lube would clean the chain as advertized. Didn't happen, so I degreased and relubed, only to have it get dirty again within a few miles next time I went out.

OK, in spite of the dirt, my impression is that this is good product, and I'll keep using it because it seems to lube the chain pretty well. It also stays on longer than Pedros or White Lightning, and doesn't leave a waxy build up. Since I'm used to degreasing my drivetrain once a week anyway, I can live with the dirtyness.

I'm giving this only 4 Chilis because it didn't work for me as advertized, but I still recommend trying it. Maybe it would work better as a wet lube. If it ever rains here, I'll find out.

Talked to Doug at Progold and he was very helpful and specific on how to apply this lube. Stripped my chain clean and it's now phenominal! I ride in sandy, gritty terrain and clay-based muck. This product sheds it completely. Can't say enough so I won't go on...buy some and let it build up on the chain internals so it can do the same for you!

Funny thing about the road bike, though. After using it on the roadie it was spattered all over the chainstays and stuff. I don't have to worry about dirt with that bike, so went back to wax (Pedro's) for that ride.

Bottom Line:I made a huge mistake when I bought my bike about a year ago and went with flexible, fast-wearing 6061 aluminum LX chainrings. I noticed wear in the first three months I had the bike. Right about that time I switched to the PC-99 chain, and also changed over to the ProLink lube after a friend recommended it. Maybe it's me, maybe it's the chain, but maybe the lube is a big part of the reason why, a year later, I'm on the same 'rings, no major wear.
I also love the fact that cleaning the chain is as simple as wiping off the black stuff, applying the new lube and spinng the chain a few times, then wiping off the excess. Beauty.
Unfortunately, I got a bottle with a really wussy flip-top cap, so application is more than a little tedious; I know I lose lube onto the chainstay and I can see it in the towel I put underneath. Overall, the stuff rules.

Bottom Line:This is an outstanding lubricant. I used to like Boeshield T-9, which also worked well, but T-9 needs over a day to dry out, stinks to high hell, and does attract somewhat more dirt. In contrast, Prolink has little odor, allows you to ride immediately (you're supposed to -- it cleans the chain during the process)and doesn't seem to attract any noticeable dirt at all. After a few applications and rides -- wiping down after each ride -- your chain becomes very clean and your drivetrain shifts beautifully. This stuff is supposed to seriously reduce wear on your drivetrain -- no small consideration when your drivetrain costs XTR mega-bucks. The price is pretty reasonable when you consider that for 24 dollars you get 3 six ounce bottles and a syringe of the stuff (useful for lubricating cables for even better shifting).

Strengths:* Works through 2 to 3 rides or more.
* Is fairly dry once solvents flash off and you wipe down the chain.
* Doesn't seem to attract as much dirt as most lubes.
* Doesn't smell nearly as bad as some make it out to (smell Break Free and then let's talk 'bout stank, my bruh-thuh).
* Seems to contain a solvent that washes dirt out on reapplication, but flashes off/dries reasonably quickly.
* Seems to contain a dry film metal friction reducer that bonds with metallic surfaces after a couple applications and rides... which means it is dry and not "oily", as oils tend to cause dirt to stick to chain/pulleys.
Weaknesses:* Doesn't last 10 rides, but nothing else does best we can tell.
* It isn't as cheap as WD-40 (WD-40 being one of the worst lubes foisted on the unsuspecting American pubic (sic) at large... all marketing and no substance....it be gummy $hit, brah.)
Similar Products Used:TriFlow, BreakFree, Pedros Ice Whacks/sludge, White Lightning/sludge.
Bike Setup:It has a chain, to keep things relevant.
Bottom Line:My drive train has never run smoother.

All the paraffin (wax) based stuff (Pedro's, White Lightning) seems to work well at first, but then you notice the sludge buildup on derailleur pulleys and on chain... wax + dirt = sludgey grinding compound. (I noticed same thing with folding pocket knives...wax was great at first...then it attracted lots of pocket lint and grime and made the pivots crunchy feeling/sounding like they had grains of fine sand in them. I can't think of anything to use my $hitty waxy Pedro/WL stuff on now...might hit the trash. I mean, if waxy lubes were so good, don't you think the automotive and industrial markets would use them by now? Seriously. Wish I'd thought of that and not listened to the "hype" surrounding the wax $hit.)

ProLink seems to keep my drive train humming for 2 to 3 rides minimum. Reapplication is easy and quick and you can be frugal with the little needle applicator... a small drop on every link.

Not enough wet riding yet to comment, just one sloppy ride and it did fine.

Seems to contain a solvent...let's assume it does for now. Solvent works like a cleaner when you reapply. The solvent tends to wash dirt out of chain so you can wipe it off. It also makes converting from another lube relatively easy, as you don't have to hose chain down with solvent/degreaser or take it off and soak in bucket of cleaner...just apply ProLink before 2 or 3 rides and wipe down after ride. It removes old dirt, old oils/waxes, which is a no muss, no fuss conversion. You gotta be patient, that's all. 2 or 3 rides with Prolink after each (from my friend's experience on a not-so-clean chain). You need the mechanical chain work/friction of riding to get the metal friction reducers to bind (cling is better word) with the metal surfaces, but don't worry, it works on first application fine enough (I started with a new chain).

I'm not sure I care to experiment with other products now. This stuff works as advertised. It isn't magic but it does seem to be very well and meets my needs better than other stuff I wasted money on. Using it on my collection of tactical folding knives now too.

Only other product that has my interest now is from Rock N Roll lubes, but I'm skeptical it can be appreciably better if at all. Plus Rock N Roll digs retro style in lieu of technical substance on web or in their printed literature, which makes me think they don't have any technology to discuss... just marketing hype.

Si, senior ... Five spontaneously combusting Chihuahua burritos, for sure.
