Submitted by John a Weekend Warrior from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Date Reviewed: August 6, 2005
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $7.00
Purchased At:Bike Shop in Scarborough (on Kennedy Rd. just south of Huntingwood Dr.)
Strengths:It kept my chain for being dry or rusting.
Weaknesses:This stuff is a deep dark green gooey mess. It's thick, it collects everything on your chain and whips out lube cobwebs. Thank god I didnt get any of it on my clothing.
Hard to find in bike shops in 1999, 2000 with very limited stock and expensive at $8/CAN a bottle.
Similar Products Used:Finish Line Synthetic Cross Country, Finish Line Aerosol and White Lightning.
Bike Setup:2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk, 1996 GT Ricochet.
Bottom Line:The hardest lube for me to buy in 1999 and 2000. I had to have the store owner order it for me. It took almost 4 weeks to get it in and the result - I was very disappointed. The most expensive lube I've ever bought.
I had cleaned my bike, used the product and had to re-wash the back end of the bike after the very first ride. Thank god I didnt get any of it on my clothing.
Bottom Line: For the guy in one of the other reviews that just loves it and can't get any more... contact me and I'll mail mine to you as I used it 1x and never ever again!

Favorite Trail:Shenandoah (respect, don't poach!)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $5.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Best stuff out there for messy conditions
Weaknesses:I dunno- Price?
Similar Products Used:Chainsaw Bar Lube- this stuff seems like bar lube repackaged
Bike Setup:Lots O'bikes
Bottom Line:It's all been said- but try Chain bar lube from your local auto parts or hardware store. Same stuff, much cheaper- you can get a whole quart for the same price as a little bottle of Phils. Use it on everything, but wipe it off well! I did a review for Amsoil bar lube here-

Favorite Trail:f-trail rodalben germany
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $6.00
Purchased At:BGI
Strengths:It's a fabulous lube that penetrates and stays put.
Weaknesses:As one of the other reviewers put it's really not chain lube. This stuff is messy and flings oily residue all over the bike and brake surface even after wiping the chain down.
Similar Products Used:pedros, kryotech finish line, white lightening, tri flow
Bike Setup:I have two bikes so it doesn't really matter they both have chains.
Bottom Line:I couldn't believe the difference it made on my old worn out chain on my back up bike. I though I was riding the wrong bike. It's great for fork sliders, pivots and anything that generally get's stuck from corrosion and dirt. I will always have a bottle around from now on. I just won't use it for chain lube unless I am riding in the rain and mud. It'a one of the best all around lubes out there.

Date Reviewed: October 31, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $3.00
Purchased At:Mountian Equipment Co-op
Strengths:Way to many to list. Just try it !
Weaknesses:Theres not enough of this product on the shelves in all bikes stores globely.
Similar Products Used:Everything you can think of
Bottom Line:I'm a prof mechanic whos swears by this stuff. I use it on every bike my paws work on. I recommend dumping your tri-flow bottal out, washing it and pour some Phil's in it. Witht he tri-flow small apps you can inject Phil's into any small area that requires lube. Just squirt it and go. The the lube do the rest.

Date Reviewed: October 14, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $8.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Nothing else does what it does
Weaknesses:Most riders don't know what it does
Similar Products Used:Nothing similar exists
Bike Setup:Which bike?
Bottom Line:This really isn't chain lube. I use tenacious oil for freewheels, component pivots, pretty much any tight place where you want your lubricant to stay put, but can't use grease.

It is really sticky, about halfway between an oil and a grease. Get a bottle, you'll find plenty of uses, and there's nothing else like it.

Favorite Trail:the one I'm on
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Smooth, sticky, and with the right level of application the chain stays clean
Weaknesses:Not perfect under all circumstances (but what is?), or for every application
Similar Products Used:Tri-flow, Dupont Teflon Chain lube, Finish Line, Boes T-shield
Bike Setup:Two wheels, two pedals, 3 chainrings, 8 cassette cogs
Bottom Line:A friend revealed to me the way to use Phil's oil on a chain. First, apply Phil's oil liberally. Then wipe of excess. Then (here's the secret!), cut the Phil's oil with WD40. Spray a little WD40 onto a clean cloth and wipe down the chain to remove excess Phil's oil. Just a little bit of experience will allow you to get the right coating with Phil's oil everytime. It works well in dusty conditions (the only conditions I really experience here), provides a much smoother and longer lasting chain-ring/cog interaction than I have previously experienced. The chain, rings, and cogs also seem to clean up easier than with other "dry" lubes. I use to reapply Boes T-shield every 50 miles or so, now I go about 100 miles between cleanings/reapplications with the Phil Wood Tenacious Oil/WD-40 combination (I like a smooth/clean chain).

Date Reviewed: December 5, 2000
Favorite Trail:None around here . . . I'm a roadie now
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $5.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Sticky--doesn't wash off easily
Works great in sloppy nasty condtions so typical in NE Ohio
Weaknesses:Not good for dry and/or dusty conditions
Gets gummy around derailleur pulleys if you don't wipe off excess
Similar Products Used:Tri-Flow
White Lightning
Prolink
Pedro's Ice lube
Bike Setup:GT ZR1000 w/ full 9 spd DA, DA chain
Dean Castanza Ti w/ 8 spd DA drive train, Sachs PC-51 chain
Bottom Line:This stuff rocks for commuting in the rain and slush during winter here in Cleveland. I get winter road grit everywhere, especially the drivetrain, and when it's wet, regular summer lubes just wash off after one round trip. Phil's Tenacious stays on for weeks at a time. Just make sure you wipe off the excess when you apply it, otherwise you'll get little strings of lube coming off the rear derailleur pulleys, not that it's really detrimental, just messy.

Favorite Trail:Bruce Trail
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $4.00
Strengths:Works very well in wet, muddy conditions, whereas other lubes come off with the first drop of water.
Weaknesses:Isn't the smoothest lube, but better than using smoother stuff that will come right off. Picks up dry dirt and dust.
Similar Products Used:Many
Bike Setup:GT
Bottom Line:This is an excellent lube if you like to ride in sloppy, muddy conditions. On the other hand if you ride in only dry and/or dusty conditions, try something else. Five flamin' chilis for serving its purpose. Would somebody please get rid of that mmmmm review?

Favorite Trail:
Jasper to Wabasso Lake, Alberta
Duration Product Used:
more than 3 years
Strengths:
Just like it says, tenacious. and as others say, great for wet and muck.
Weaknesses:
duh, it picks up dry dirt/dust.
Similar Products Used:
Tri-flow and other lubes I forget over the last 15 years.
Bike Setup:
Fat Chance Kicker for over 10 years. Currently, Fisher Procaliber.
Bottom Line:Depending on the conditions I'll be in I use more or less Phil's or TriFlow and go with little or no Phil's for dry rides like summer in Tahoe or the desert. When it's mucky like New Hampshire or the Cascades I give a heavy coat of Phil's.
And why don't you delete the lame mmmmm review?

Submitted by Dan Rahrer a Cross-Country Rider from London, Ontario
Date Reviewed: July 18, 1999
Duration Product Used:
more than 3 years
Strengths:
Great in wet and mud
Weaknesses:
Not good in sand or dust
Similar Products Used:
WL, Pedros IW & ED, TF, FL
Bottom Line:Phil's is great for wet and muddy rides, but it attracts sand and dust when the trail is dry. One solution, for long rides when the trail is mostly dry, but with some mud or water crossings, where stuff like WL or IW will wash off: Apply Phil's, work it in, wipe completely dry, then cover with IW or WL. This trick helped me through the 1999 Paris to Ancaster Tour (65 km on/off road), when it rained for the last hour, then snowed. The bike and I were covered in muck, ice and snow. There was still some Phil's on the chain at the finish.

Easy to use- works well.
Weaknesses:
Attracts dirt, not chicks.
Similar Products Used:
Boeshield, Schwinn
Bottom Line:I had to put a review in here to counter that idiot mmmmmmmm below. Phil's deserves better- it works well, and you can use it on other parts on yer bike. Lasts a while, just wipe- reapply and go- no waiting!

Submitted by Mike a Cross-Country Rider from Alberta
Date Reviewed: April 11, 1999
Duration Product Used:
more than 3 years
Strengths:
Cheap and effective
Weaknesses:
Attracts dirt
Similar Products Used:
Almsot everything
Bike Setup:
Ritchey hard tail
Bottom Line:I have used this sthuff for almost 10 years and swear by it. Clean your chain every couple of rides with solvent, dry with a rag, and then liberally apply Phil's green goo and your chain will practically last forever. I used one XT chain for seven years before it finally gave up the ghost (and that was after thousands of miles of pretty hard riding).
It really works well in very wet and muddy conditions but be forewarned - it gets real dirty especially in dusty climes but that does not seem to affect it's performance.
