Chain does need to be clean. | | Bottom Line: | Bottom line on this is that it works as long as you apply to a clean chain. It does keep your chain clean in dusty loose conditions. I used pro link and it's good but sand and dust stuck to it a lot more then using a wax lubricant. I'll continue to use it until I try something better this it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$15.00 | | Strengths: | *It cleans the chain well | | Weaknesses: | *You have to reapply it before each ride. Who would want to waste their time doing that?
*The directions on how to use it (which are supposed to be for 'first-time users') are vague. They don't tell you where exactly you need to apply the lubricant. Apparently, it's quite important that you apply the lubricant on parts other than the chain, or you risk damaging your drivetrain.
*The main advantage of the product - that it is a cleaner and lubricant in one product - is useless, unless you enjoy maintaining your bike after each ride. | | Bottom Line: | I definitely would not recommend this product. It would be more worthwhile to buy a degreaser and a conventional lubricant. Buying these separately might be a bit more expensive, but at least you won't have to waste time and get yourself dirty applying the ridiculous ice wax on your bike before each ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$7.00 | | Purchased At: | Can't remember | | Strengths: | Cleans while you ride. | | Weaknesses: | Not a weakness but you do have to reapply after (or before) every ride | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning | | Bike Setup: | Giant Reign 1: XT Comp Spec. Fox suspension front and back | | Bottom Line: | Conventional lube vs wax lubes is like the chevy vs ford debate. There are valid points on both sides of the argument. Bottom line is it comes down to preference. If you're the type of rider that likes to lube up on occation and ride until your chain is black and filthy before you clean it, stick with the conventional. If you don't mind dabbing a little on after (or before) each ride, and you like a product that repells dirt and grime rather than inviting it to stick to your drivetrain, this is a great product. One of the reviews says, "this will damage your drive train", that is not true provided your chain is perfectly clean before application. Problems can arise however if you apply any waxy lube on a dirty chain...then it will damage your drivetrain! MAKE SURE YOUR CHAIN AND CASSETTE ARE CLEAN BEFORE APPLYING! Reapplication is required because of how waxy lubes work. As you ride your chain picks up dirt. With a conventional lube this dirt sticks to your chain. With a waxy lube, the the dirt chips off and takes a small amount of lube with it. After a long ride there won't be much lube left. Hence, the need for reapplication. Pedro's Ice wax lasts about as long as other similar products. Lastly, this is not a good lube for consistantly wet areas such as the northwest coast. If you ride in coastal areas it's probably better to stick to a conventional lube. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It will wear quickly at times but has never left me high and dry during a ride. For the price, this is the best lube I have used and plan on continuing to use it. After using the product for several months I have concluded that it just doesn't last and is a poor lubricant. I have two full bottles and another that is mostly full that I will not be using. Going back to the white lightning, which I used before.

You must let it dry before you ride otherwise it became messy. (I usually apply it a night before the ride and it last more than two rides). The main advantage is that it drys out totally so it doesn't collect any dust. It also works as a degreaser for the chain. Anyway, it lubs as well as a graphite based grease, without the mess.

After a very thorough cleaning of the chain and degreasing to clear off any old lubricants, I applied Pedro's Ice Wax. The bike actually sat for a couple of days before I rode it, so it had pleanty of time to setup. The first 5-10 miles of riding are great. The chain is extremely smooth and quiet in very sandy, dusty conditions. After that mileage, the wax seems to disappear from the chain and your bike squeals and doesn't seem to want to spin. Once the squealing starts, I put some Finish Line Dry on and the rest of my ride is problem free. I'm using the rest of this bottle and never buying it again. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It's better than most wet lubes for our dusty and sandy trails, but it's probably the worst lube I've ever used in 17 years of cycling. The label directions are accurate: "Reapply after each ride." They're not joking! Sometimes, you may even need to apply it DURING a ride.....which you had better plan on doing if there is high humidity or any sort of water on the trail.
At half the price, I'm not sure I'd buy the product again unless it were a choice of either that or WD-40. At the price I paid, I'm pissed at the lbs owner who told me what a great lube it was. Two bottles later, I learned that it's not smart to buy two of a new product before you know how it will work. lol. I do like the thick consistency, but the cruddy applicator tip oughta be scrapped for something better.

If you're looking to "lube it and forget it", this product isn't for you. However, if you enjoy maintaining you machine and keeping it clean between rides, this product works well.
The bottle says to "apply liberally, work into chain and let stand 10 minutes before riding" I've found that 10 minutes is an inadequate amount of time to wait. When applied the night before and allowed to dry for several hours, the chaing dries nicely with a good, waxy finish.
The best way to apply it is with a toothbrush. Load up the bristles and brush the chain as you would your teeth working on the top, bottom and sides. Once completely covered, roll the chain around the drivetrain slowly for a few revolutions then let stand overnight.

I used to use White Lightning but the last half of the bottle would plug up the hole and you could not get the product out. Ice wax was recommended by my LBS. After 1 ride, about 10 km, (6 miles) my chain started sqeaking, I relubed and the sqeaking came back after 1 ride again. Thought my chain was rusting. Cleaned all the Ice Wax off and lubed with 3 in 1 oil. No more squeak. After a few rides, cleaned off the 3 in 1 and relubed with Ice Wax. 1 ride later the squeaking was back. This stuff is crap. Maybe not the most economical choice. | | Similar Products Used: | Triflow, Finish Line, Pedro's Ultra Dry | | Bottom Line: | I have been very pleased with how well the Ice Wax works. I wipe the chain down after riding, apply the stuff, then wipe it down ten minutes later. Though this regimen means I'm using a lot of lube, it's worth it to me since I'm not dealing with the horrible black gunk that comes with Triflow or Finish Line and I don't have to legitimately clean the chain nearly as much. I fully expect this to help the life of my chainrings if for no other reason than the piles and piles and dirt I'm used to seeing with other lubes jsut aren't there. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The aerosol form is consistent and easy to apply. Just point the nozzle at the chain, turn the crank, and it applies a consistent white stream of wax to the chain. Because the aerosol is low-pressure, there is no overspray. After applying, wait a minute, and then wipe off excess with a rag. I recommend applying Ice Wax before every ride. if you think about the logic it doesnt work, a degreaser and lubricant all in one??? its like drinking salty water, it will either dehydrate you or quench your thirst but not both.
I tried this product after using finishline teflon which i was happy with. unfortunately pedros was a hasty purchase and now i have to live with it, the problem is that it collects sooooo much dust. Using this lube is like rubbing sand into you gears and chain.
i gave this lube every chance, even taking that chain off and fully degreasing then reapplying every ride... and it worked for 3 pedal strokes before it became like chewing gum on my chain from collecting soo much dust.
the only time this lube worked was when it was pouring with rain and even then triflow worked about 100 times better.
my final thought, if you even have to turn the lights off to like your bike a little, dont buy this product. spend the bucks and buy finishine, triflow, or prolink. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Steel is real !!! | | Bottom Line: | I received an extra Pedros manual from my bicycle shop that says that you need to lube your chain first with Pedros Syn or Dry Lube after degreasing your chain. Dry your chain with a rag and finally you can apply the Ice Wax. Let dry for several hours. This procedure eliminates all squeeking ! Afterwards I only need to relube with the Ice Wax untill the chain starts squeaking. Because of the thikness of the Ice Wax it cannot penetrate inside the links of your chain. That's why you need to apply a fluid lube first. The Ice Wax is a very well lube, but only for the outside of your chain ! In fact, the first lubing of the inside of your chain works well with every lube, not only Pedro's Sun or Dry lube. 5 - 1 star because of the long procedure of applying two lubes on 1 chain.

The difference is in applying this lube correctly. Clean your cassette, front chainrings, and chain until completely free of grease, gunk, etc. Let everything dry. Next, apply liberally, run through all the gears, wait a few minutes. Now, wipe off, and re-apply sparingly. Allow this to set. (I let it set overnight.) Since taking this approach, my chain and drive train work like butter!!! I must admit how amazed I am after riding through mud, dirt, water, etc., the chain still works perfectly well and is CLEAN!!! Water based. | | Weaknesses: | Takes some time to apply correctly. | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightening | | Bike Setup: | Trek 8500 | | Bottom Line: | By reading the other reviews it appears that bikers either really like Ice Wax or really hate it. I've be doing mtb for about 7 years. I've used oil, greasy based lubes most of those years. Over a year ago I started using Ice Wax and love it. One reason may be because I use the AEROSOL product which foams up when you apply it. It goes on well, though it does take some time (10 minutes). As others have written, I apply it liberally, run the chain through a cloth or folded paper towel and get it in the links well, shift through all the gears a few times, and let it dry. This means that I don't apply it immediately before I ride. I leave at least 1 hr for drying. Another thing I like about Ice Wax is that it is WATER BASED. Cleaning your chain is as easy hosing off your drivetrain, removing excess water and then reapplying Ice Wax. I still use a chain cleaner, but not as often as I used to. Plus, my drivetrain stays very clean. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$6.00 | | Strengths: | Cleaner than oils. Lasts longer IF you apply it correctly. Really does shed dirt. Works better in wet weather than your standard oils. Superior to White Lightning. | | Weaknesses: | Chain can accumulate globs of wax (but who really cares). | | Similar Products Used: | White lightning. | | Bike Setup: | Litespeed. XTR with SRAM (SACHS) chain. Shimano chain is crap. | | Bottom Line: | I've read lots of reviews about this stuff, argued about it, used oil and other lubricants. Bottom line is with proper application this stuff is superior to oil. Not superior as in "HOLY COW I GOT 300 MILES ON ONE APPLICATION!". Just generally a better thing AND my drivetrain seems to be lasting longer since I started using it. Proper application is important. This is how I do it.
1) Buy the aerosol. It doesn’t clog and is easy to apply with no waste if you know how. I use a workstand when storing my bike so I do it like this. 2) With bike on stand shift into 3rd gear. Hold can in left hand and rest the application straw lightly on the chain pointing to the front while gauging your hand behind the seat stay on top of the cassette. Make sure the straw is low and parallel to the chain. 3) With your right hand grab a pedal and crank foreward slowly. At same time press the spray valve and meter the wax out until the whole length of the chain is covered with a copious amount. Don’t be stingy. Don’t try to coat the outside of the chain. If done right the wax won’t shoot through the links creating a mess. 4) Stop the tire from spinning. Grab the chain with a rag and spin the crank backwards a number of times. Rotate the rag while doing this but keep the goopy portion of the rag on the chain at all times. This is to push the wax into the rollers and to lightly coat the links for rust protection on all sides. Do not rotate to wax free areas of the rag while you do this. The idea is not to wipe the wax off of the chain but to push the wax into the chain especially around the rollers. 5) This is key to using wax products successfully. The excess wax that you DIDNT wipe off will liquefy when you ride providing more lubrication.
If you are anal retentive and just HAVE to wipe your chain until it is devoid of all lubricants and shines like the headers on a Harley then USE OIL AND QUIT YOUR B!TCHING.

But when I consider a lube for the chain, I want something that will last. And let's be serious, all lubes will collect dirt. I ride 2-3 hours a day 4x/week and I could cover my chain in IceWax, and within an hour and a half, my chain would be squeaking and was bone dry!! There is nothing more annoying than being half way out on a trail, and have your lube give out, and now you are losing power trying to push the chain around, and....well, that's it in a nutshell (although I just tried it and even the 2 oz. bottle doesn't fit in a nutshell..). The chain stays remarkably clean through mud and sand. I clean it once every week or two with a park cyclone chain cleaner and re-apply pedros Ice wax. The trick is to first fully clean the chain, cassette and chain rings. Then apply the gunk to both the inside and outside of the chain. Spin the chain for at least a minute. Then run the bike slowly through the gears (this applies some of the lube to the cogs). Now let it dry and wipe down the chain. Then go ride. When you are though riding flip your bike upside down. Wipe down the chain with a clean cloth or paper towel. This removes the excess dirt and grime from the outside of the chain. Brush out the cassette and chainrings. Re-apply the ice wax to both the inside and outside of the chain. Spin the chain for a minute... (you get the idea) I typically lube the chain in the parking lot after a ride. You don't have to wait that long before wiping down the chain (a minute or two) the lube on the outside of the chain isn't going to do a bit of good, but let the chain dry a couple of hours before riding in the dirt.
The most impressive thing I noticed about the Ice Wax was the immediate reduction in drivetrain friction with the first application. The crank just spun so smoothly it was amazing. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Lube SHOULD come in a bottle...or at least a container of some sort. | | Weaknesses: | Reminds me of my children (3yrs & 8mths) when its "nappy time", squeak, squeak, squeak. If you follow Pedro's recommended cleaning and prep work you might as well perform surgery...you and the bike will be clean enough! Any lube that requires this much preparation should stay-put for a LONG,LONG time. This one didn't! | | Similar Products Used: | Pedro's synlube, Triflow, "rub-a-dub-dub three links in a tub (of parrafin). | | Bike Setup: | Nice bike, but all you should care about is the chain...RIGHT? | | Bottom Line: | Ran out of tri-lube and bought this because it sounded promising, "Dry like wax - Slick like ice!" The only thing slick about this product is it's marketing. Followed the lengthy preparation procedure and prepared my self for a library-quiet series of rides. In a nut shell; before the end of the first ride, 15 miles in dry weather (except two teenie weenie stream crossings) my chain was screaming and sqealing like a stuck pig. By the way, what is a "stuck pig"? Who did the sticking? And why would anyone want to do that to a pig? Besides, aren't they a lot like us...play in the dirt all day long? Seriously, I'm surprised such a bad product could make it past the field testing phase. Now I have another problem. What am I going to do with a nearly full bottle of worthless lube. I quess I'll go ask my kids. They seem to know all about squeaks. PS. It's laughable only because its an inexpensive item, otherwise I'd be steamed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It wasn’t designed for that - you should find another lube.
Here's a common-sense tip: If you're applying to a chain with build-up, let the lube sit for 10 min, then wipe off with a rag. Apply the lube once more and you're good to go. I lightly lube about every 3rd ride to keep my chain happy. Takes just 30 seconds.

Applied to a clean chain, this stuff makes a nice lube. BUT...well, a few buts: 1st, the stuff needs to be applied every ride -- two rides in a row, even on my road bike in the dry, and it squeaks like crazy. 2nd, chain stays clean for a while, but if IW is applied repeatedly w/o degreasing (de-waxing, I suppose), a VERY sticky black buildup quickly results, precipitating mad chain-suck -- bogus! Also, I find that I need to be careful to wipe the excess spooge from chainrings/cogs right after applying, or I'll have the same problem right from the first application. 3rd, it needs to dry for a few hours before using or...black nasty stick-as-hell buildup (ok, maybe that was still the 2nd item). Overall, nice + clean to work with (at first), and smooth (at first), BUT, can get messy pretty easily, lousy corrosion protection, and lasts about a minute. Not so hot. | Overall Rating: |

As far as off road, sure the chain stays clean, but so does a dry chain with no lube. I'm not sure how well it lubricates in any case-my chain seems to make more noise and shifting is degraded making it necessary to clean and re-apply in the field more than should be needed. This is the best chain lube for this area that I have tried. It is cleaner than the two White Lightning products, the Schwinn Factory Wax, and Boeshield. Absolutely does not attract dirt, and the chain runs quietly. And I have not had a problem with surface rust on my chains, but then again nothing rusts around here. I do reapply after every second ride, but that is not a messy deal because it stays on the chain while it dries instead of making a puddle on the floor. I have to agree with the riders who found Ice Wax to cause their chain to rust in only mildly wet conditions, maybe all the pos reviews are from places where the avg humidity is 10% (Colo etc), but here in the wet (not even that wet yet!) this stuff lasts about 4days of twice daily riding before the chain sounds like a flat four with no oil, then the rust happens. Maybe if you filled the chain cleaner with this stuff and left it on while you rode... it probabaly wouldn't be much louder...I'll go back to white lightning, it coats the chain way better. One idea though, since this stuff is water based (AKA environmentally friendly) a better way than to wash chain w/ waterbased cleaner, rinse, and then ask lube to displace the water still between the links would be to really DRY the chain BEFORE applying the lube. This could be done with acetone, a hairdrier or even a propane torch (not w/ acetone!) then add lube & work in w/ a rag or brush. It still won't last long but maybe less rust...Two stars cause it ran smooth for a day | Overall Rating: |

Recently switched to this lube from Finish Line Teflon Dry Lube out of curiosity for wax type lubes. Ice Wax is not a pure wax lube since it contains silicone, a true lubricant with a friction coefficient as low as many oils. Waxes like White Lightning are actually very poor lubricants and have a much higher friction coefficient (according to Timken tests), and therefore cause much higher wear. True waxes also fall off rather quickly leaving the chain completely exposed without any lubrication.I find Ice Wax a good compromise: - it stays cleaner than oils - it never wears completely away (because of the silicone), therefore lasts longer and safer than waxes - it lubricates better than waxes, but not as well as some quality oils (according to timken tests) - it is easy to apply and washes off the hands easliyThe only negative: It will create some surface rust on the chain (not sure about new chains) because it is water based, especially on the outside surfaces of the inner link plates. However, I do not think it causes structural damage to the chain. This may scare some weanies who may believe their chain is disintegrating, as noted in the reviews below. I would recommend this lube for people wanting to switch off dirty oils.

The Pedro's dry lube, Compared to the wet lube from Pedro's (and many other wet or dry lubes), the extra dry is a dream lube. It doesn't attract as much dirt as the synlube, and it keeps the chain relatively quiet. But is does have to be applied to the chain before almost ever ride to keep the shifting performance up. The only good thing about the wet lube is that it can last for a couple of rides before you need to reapply...and the synlube attracts dirt like a magnet with iron filings. But recently I upgrade to using the Pedro's Ice wax...and WOW does this lube work. It doesn't attract any dirt what so ever, I have to only apply it to the chain once every 3 or 4 rides, and the chain is constantly shifting well, with the smoothest movement. My chain has never been sop quiet. I never thought I could be impressed my a lube so much. I didn't think there would be much difference...but there is. Using common sense would tell you that all lubes perform almost the same, but I was fooled...there in a major improvement with the ICEWAX!!!1 GET PEDRO'S ICE WAX!!!!! All of the othere lubes are nothing compared to the ICE WAX. Maybe the Finish Line Kritech is comparable to the ICE WAX, but I haven't tried it. Anyway, Pedro's dry Lube is a waste compared to ICE WAX!!!!! | Overall Rating: |
