Favorite Trail:White Ranch
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $7.00
Purchased At:Through Dumonde Tech
Strengths:Smooth, probably the smoothest chain lube on the market. This lube will make your drive train more efficient and silent.
Weaknesses:None if used properly.
Similar Products Used:Lube Job and Tri-Flow
Bike Setup:I use it on my road and mtb.
Bottom Line:This is a high maintenance lube for people who take care of their bike. The reason people complain about "black gunk" is because they don't clean their bike after every ride. MTBs especially. The chain should also look dry after you apply the lube. If you ritually do this, you will never have black stuff build up on your chain. I have been using this stuff for almost ten years! It also makes it easier to overhaul your bike when the time comes. Bottom Line: This sh#t is great!

Strengths:stays on chain
Weaknesses:gets really sticky and messy
Similar Products Used:Triflow, white lightning, finish line wet, finish line dry, Prolink, Purple extreme
Bottom Line:I worked in a shop where our boss had a fetish for trying chain lubes and greases. I am allways willing to try a new one as well.
Dumond tech drys and gets sticky but not very greasy. I hot tanked my drivetrain prior to putting it on my chain. After two weeks it was a sticky mess. I was not impressed.

Simply put this chain lube will never go on my bike again. There are better options for any and all conditions out there.

Take a look at Purple extreme for the wet and Prolink for the dry. Squirt is on my to try list.

Strengths:Makes chain quiet
Weaknesses:attracts dirt, then hardens. Good at first, and then 3 rides later you look at your chain and say "what the F?"
Similar Products Used:White lightning
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight, Jamis Dakar
Bottom Line:I would not buy this again. Stick with white lightning. All you have to do is put it on the night before and then don't wipe or anything. This one you have to worry about puttin too much on, and then wiping the excess off.

Date Reviewed: October 19, 2007

Price Paid: $6.00
Strengths:Superior lubricant, hands down, the best on the market, period.
Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:Pro-Link and a few other also rans........
Bike Setup:Classic road (racing) bikes......, combined with gruppo (not by that fishing tackle company) based on reliabilty, durability, stability. You weight weenies and wannabe poseurs can go your own way, I go mine.
Bottom Line:Dumonde Tech is simply the superior product. Nothing compares and there are one or two other lubricants out there that are great, but not to the level of Dumonde tech.

The company suffers measurably from horrible marketing to the point of inexcuseable non-existance. Neverthless, this is such a superior product as to beggar description. More bike shops ought to carry it.
Any notion or complaint about this product causing problems is altogether unfounded. Only a myopic idiot would make such remark.

Strengths:Last a long time in wet and dry conditions, doesn't attract dirt, works for lubing other parts as well
Weaknesses:none when used properly
Similar Products Used:Pro-Link, Tri-Flow, Finish Line
Bike Setup:2005 XLT
Bottom Line:The best lube on the market, works perfect. My large bottle that I purchased 5 years ago is still 1/3 full. The "black stuff" complaint I see is called dirt...which means you didn't start out with a clean chain. If you start with a clean chain and follow directions properly, nothing works as well as this lube.

Strengths:Makes chain very quiet. Easy to apply.
Weaknesses:Can't buy it locally.
Similar Products Used:WL, Prolink
Bike Setup:Trek 5500 Dura Ace
Bottom Line:I used WL for years because I could grab the chain with my hands and not get black grime all over. I got tired of the heavy wax build up and marginal lubrication. I started using Prolink and was dissappointed because the black grime returned with a vengance and my chain was not very quiet. A friend told me about Dumonde Tech, I read the reviews and was skeptical but decided to give it a try. My chain was pretty grimey due to the Prolink so I cleaned it. I was suprised how much easier Dumonde was to apply, it is more viscous than PL so it is easier to get it on the chain instead of dripping off. I could tell with my bike on the work stand that the chain was quieter. When I rode up and the street I was astounded how much quieter it was. Looking forward to see how long it lasts.

Favorite Trail:50-Year & its many tributaries
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $7.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Long lasting between thorough cleanings - reasonably priced considering how little is used per application. Best use in dry/warm conditions, wet is great too, but reapply more often.
Weaknesses:Nothing that any other lube better.
Similar Products Used:White lightning, Pedros, several others I can't recall off hand.
Bike Setup:Titus Moto-Lite, SRAM X.O, Shimano 7701 Chain
Bottom Line:Preface - as others have - this stuff kicks when you follow the directions. New chain, out of box - CLEAN IT OF ALL GUNKY STUFF. Dry, apply, work in, wipe off... ride until you start to hear the chain, reapply, wipe, ride...

That's basically it. Sometimes if really dusty after a fresh application, I'll get minor build up, but it wipes right off. Also, after a while, you get the "feel" of how long you can go before reapplying, and catch it before "you hear the chain"... for me, it's about 60-80 miles depending on conditions. Every once in a while, I'll let it go a little longer (like if I forget to relube, then ride in to work, and again back home again). When the new application gets on, it is *so* noticeable... a test ought to be done to determine how much more efficient you pedal with this stuff.

If you don't thoroughly wipe off excess, it will gunk up faster, but again, it isn't too hard to wipe up. I also notice I have much less of a problem if I reapply *after* a ride so it can "soak in" (or polymerize? whatever it does...) overnight before the next ride. Those of you who indicate gumming problems should try this.

I also ride throughout the winter (I commute to work at least 3 days per week over a variety of the sweetest singletrack around), and I personally don't notice any problem in cold conditions (I'll head out even when it's in the 20's... which is about as cold as it gets here in the desert). From the other reviews, I might try the "lite" for the winter... but then again, if it ain't broke...

Great stuff... you owe it to try it (and follow the instructions!)!

Purchased At:Sammish Valley Cyclery
Strengths:A follow up from Sept 2004. Dumonde just does it for me in all types of riding. No black on my chain! I understand that if using a cleaner the leaves a residue or applied it over another brand, you get the black stuff but will get better over a few applications.
Weaknesses:uuuummmmm Nothing.
Similar Products Used:All the advertised brands.
Bike Setup:Still have a stable. To many some say.
Bottom Line:I have turned a fair amount of other riders on to Dumonde Tech and have heard no real complaints other then the black goo but admit they didn't clean the chain completely the first time BUT did get cleaner. S.V.C guys really like it to. As clean as Pro-Link but definately lasts longer. Dumondes Liquid Grease is Fricken Cool. I have used in my King freebody. WOW, nice stuff. 5 Chilis for sure.

Strengths:Smooth shifting, extremely quiet chain, lasts about 200-300 miles on a road bike before chain starts to make noise, economical (4oz bottle should last 20K miles)
Weaknesses:Not very clean. I tried both "light" and "regular". Cleaned chain prior to treating as recommended, and wiped off all excess after application. Lot's of black stuff on chain, chainwheel, and cogs. Easy to wipe off, however. If you buff the chain after every ride, eventually the black stuff will stop coming out of the chain. But you'll need to relube shortly thereafter.
Similar Products Used:Phil Wood's Tenacious oil

Bottom Line:Good, but not great. I'd like a product which didn't get everything coated with black crap. But as this is the material created from chain wear, it's probably impossible. I'll try ProLink Gold next, as reviews indicate it may keep chain cleaner.

Strengths:I to have longer term testing. "Lite" work a little better in cooold than "Original". Long lasting, clean, smooth shifting, silent. Works great on cable, pivots, forks, spd.
Weaknesses:Don't buy as much lube any more.
Similar Products Used:Tri-Flow, White Lighting(bad), Pedros

Nothing like a wax lube. Waxes stick to the chain. Dumonde Tech molecularly bonds by polymerization making it waterproof. NO build it ever.

Strengths:- Excellent longevity
- Effective in warm weather
- Water repellant, seems to work better in wet conditions
- Relatively clean
Weaknesses:- Moderate build-up
- Poor lubrication in cold weather
Similar Products Used:White Lighting, Tri-Flow, Finish Line, Prolink (my favorite)
Bike Setup:Trek XO-1 cyclocross, bar end shifters, Specialized nimbus Armadillo tires, Deore LX rear derailleur
Bottom Line:This is a follow-up to my original review about three years ago. Of all the lubes I've tried, this is my second favorite (behind Prolink). Dumonde Tech uses polymer (a light plastic) technology, and works similarly to wax lubes. Since the polymer is much thinner than wax, you don't get nearly as much build-up, but you will still get some. After 3-4 applications, you'll probably want to clean your chain.

Dumonde Tech works well in warm weather. The polymer stays relatively viscous, so it doesn't cake up on the chain. It also does an excellent job of repelling dirt and moisture. It actually seems to work better in wet weather, probably because the water makes it slick.

However, much like wax lubes, Dumonde Tech hardens in cold weather, and doesn't reduce friction. It also builds up
excessively for the same reason.

For off-road riders, it's a great choice because it repels water, and has excellent longevity. For general use riding, Prolink is a better choice because it doesn't build-up, and reduces friction more effectively in cold weather.

Strengths:Smells nice.
Keeps drivetrain quiet initially.
Weaknesses:Attracts dust like crazy--not a good lube for dusty conditions.
Mildly expensive for a teeny dropper bottle (but if it worked for me, I could overlook that).
Similar Products Used:Rock 'n Roll lube, Tri-Flow, White Lightning.
Bike Setup:A bike with a chain.
Bottom Line:I tried this lube for a while after reading the positive reviews here. I applied it just as the intructions recommended--I cleaned my chain, applied it quite sparingly (a drop per link), and buffed the hell out of it. Unfortunately after a dusty ride, the chain would attract GOBS of dirt, and I'd have to reclean and relube all over again. After using it for a few months, I switched back to Rock 'n Roll Lube, which I've found to be a much better lube for the dusty conditions I ride.

I have no experience with this lube in wet conditions, but I can't recommend it for dusty climates.

Price Paid: $11.00
Purchased At:Several Oregon stores
Strengths:Clean, long lasting, quiet running, easily maintained, not effected by water. Used on cables, SPD, brake pivots and fork sliders.
Weaknesses:Don't over apply. Attracts dirt only if over applied or over another lube. Like all lubes.
Similar Products Used:Old lubes, all "new" lubes.
Bike Setup:Road bike, Mountain, kids
Bottom Line:Some awsome products. If you use it WRONG it will be wet and collect dirt. Just wipe the chain after applying. Don't over apply thinking it will last longer, you'll be wasting it. You need 2-3 application to develop the distance. Start with a really clean chain and you'll not have to clean it again with cleaners or solvents. Instruction cards are well done and explains what to do in depth. I can get 400-450 miles on road bike before hearing the sightest of noise, even in rain. Mountain bike, nothing will last longer, especially in Bend,OR. Dumonde Tech "Liquid Grease" is pretty cool stuff also.

Strengths:Outstanding lube. No wax-based gumming, easy to clean & re-lube & lasts longer on a road-bike than any other lite lube I've used. Used it on MTB, requires a bit more attention.
Weaknesses:None. Works well for the application it was designed for. If your into dumping multiple-layers of wax on an already gummed-up chain, go ahead if you too lazy to take care of your equipment... If you throughly clean that chain, Apply properly, This is the best.

Bottom Line:I heard more then a few riders tell me the stuff is great, so I tried it. It didn't take long to understand the chain stayed silent because the oil holds the fine dirt in the chain thats thrown up off the front wheel on the chain at the front chain rings. Strengths:Clean, easy to apply, dry, lasts long (over 4 rides), quiet, consistent performance all the way.
Weaknesses:Not self cleaning. Gotta scrub and clean and scrub and clean with solvent on first application. Gotta at least wash and clean chain on later application.
Similar Products Used:Rock'n'Roll Extreme, ProLink, White Lightning, etc
Bike Setup:2001, GF Sugar 2, Shimano HG93 chain.
Bottom Line:Best lube so far, very clean, silent, doesn't gunk up, stays on for a while, last for 5 or 6 rides before the chain start screaming. Of course I brush the dust and dirt off the drivetrain after every ride, and the lube is pretty dry, doesn't really attract or stick dirt. Can't say about mud, haven't tested it there yet.

My only complain is you gotta clean the chain before putting the lube on....and I mean really clean and wash the chain clean, but shouldn't matter much since I don't have to re-lube that often.

Best of all, its thick syrupy and easy to neatly drop on every link.

Strengths:Great wet weather lube. It is always wet and muddy here! I use it all season through. I keep my drive train clean. Clean it after every ride especially the chain. A little anal I am. Lately I just been hosing the bikes off. Not degreasing. No grinding yet and shifting fine. I'll go until shifting is compromised, I hear some noise or I can't stand it not being shiney.
Weaknesses:Wet lubes attract dust in the dry. Don't care but its true...oh no!!! After a real muddy ride though you're gonna have to uncake the chain, No lube can withstand that much earth.
Similar Products Used:Tri-Flo, finish line teflon-plus

Bottom Line:Use this lube the most. My bike shop refills my bottle for $7.00. They recommended it to me cause they use it too. They laugh at how often I clean my drive train. They just hose their DT's off and clean/relube after a few rides. The lube is that good. Love the way it smells too. After cleaning the chain I just rag dry it(wipe excess water off) and relube. Then I get on peddle it and shift through all the gears to spead the lube through out the drive train. After this I wipe off excess lube and put it in the garage until the next ride. I think you need to peddle the lube into the chain not just spin it around. I don't wait for it to dry before I lube the chain. Chain rusts by then. Anyways the way I do it works. My DT's last a good length of time and I ride at least 5x's a week...usually.

Bottom Line:I am using a chain that has less than 50 miles on it. Its only been on 5 trail miles the rest are on the trainer indoors. I used the wax lubricant and thought it was good. I moved the chain to a my new bike. All new components. I was noticing alot of noise in the chain. I decided to put some more wax lubricant on it. As I was listening to the chain I noticed that there was a grinding noise like from dirt in the chain. Being a new and hardley used chain with wax lube I thought that was odd. So I went to the LBS and they said that this dumonde stuff was good. Boy were they right. I cleaned the chain with Degreaser. Poored boiling hot water over it to get the grime and loosen the old oil. It also helps the chain to dry much much faster. I then used this stuff and oh man. I couldnt even hear the chain on my bike. I havent used it outside but from the stye of lube it is I am sure it wont be a problem. I am rating this soley on the fact of it bringing my chain bake to life. I think the wax lubricant was just to thin and gives a false lube feel.

So I dont think I will be changing lubes for quite some time. I finally found the one I want to use. Smooth performance, nice price.

Strengths:Lubricating properties are outstanding. A very small amount lasts very long and I can feel the products superiority over many other lubes. This lube takes a long time to break down. Small bottle allows me to take it on the trail.
Weaknesses:The smell is a little goofey. When I first smelled it I put it away in a drawer until I ran out of other lubes. Then, out of need, I tried it and realized I had been cheating myself with the other, well marketed lubes. Also, this stuff is a little difficult to find.

Favorite Trail:The paved one (yes, I'm a roadie...got a problem with that?).
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $10.00

Strengths:A unique and effective formula. Lubes the chain excellently (unlike wax -- darn wax!), stays on well, and stays where you want it (and not everywhere else). Very easy to apply.
Weaknesses:Product what?
Similar Products Used:That's all behind me now.
Bike Setup:YES, it's a ROAD bike, we already went through this, why must I be persecuted further?!
Bottom Line:I honestly can't complain much about the price, because after each application, I can scarcly tell that the fluid line has dropped in the bottle.
It keeps my chain quiet, just like the messier oil-based lubes, but without the mess...was that a redundant statement?
You don't have to let it sit. If someone tells you that, it's NOT TRUE. You do however have to purify your drive train before applying it for the first time.
My mountain-biking cronies use it, and it works for them (or so they tell me), so I can't think of any application that this lube wouldn't be good for.
Don't let anyone kid you though...it IS still a wet lube, and it stays wet, which is what you want (unlike wax -- darn wax!), and if it's wet, it's gonna collect dust, plain and simple. But it is truly a different kind of "wet". It's not the filthy, get all over your hands and everything else kind of "wet" like the oily lubes. I can touch the sides of my chain, and get little or nothing on me; it really does stay right inside and on the chain rollers, and on the gear teeth. If you touch the rollers, you will get a black smudge on your fingers, but it's not the same, and it comes right off -- you just have to buy it for yourself to see!
It is a real lube, for the real world of bicycling (unlike wax -- darn wax!).

Purchased At:REI - Seattle
Strengths:A good compromise between a wet and a dry lube. Its overall longevity exceeds others I have used by 50-100%. Their Liquid Grease has very low roling resistance, and holds up well to water. Low $/application.
Weaknesses:The first application requires very clean components. Cannot apply over other lubes.
Similar Products Used:Tri-Flow, Pedros Ice Wax, Finish Line Lubes, White Lightning.
Bike Setup:Nine Speed Drivetrains, Open and Cartridge Bearings
Bottom Line:This is not a drip and go lube. It is for the cyclist that wants a competive level lube, and understands how to use it, apply it. I only use Dumonde Tech Lubricants on my bikes as a chain lube, cable and pivot lube, bearing grease, and fork dust seal lube. Poor application or maintenance equals poor performance.

Strengths:Great viscosity, long lasting. Combines the benefits of oil and wax lubes, without the drawbacks of either. As other have mentioned it has an odd, but strangely appealing odor.
Weaknesses:Price
Similar Products Used:Tri-Flow, White Lightning, Cross-Country (forgot company)
Bike Setup:2000 Specialized FSR XC, stock, except I replaced the seat with a Selle Italia Saddle (forgot make).
Bottom Line:Many have attempted to attempted to produce a lube that combines the benefits of oil (great lubrication) and wax (very clean), while eliminating the disadvantages of both (oil-very dirty, poor longevity: wax-poor lubrication). Dumonde is the first lube I've found that succeeds.

The bike mechanic told me it's a light, plastic-like polymer, so the idea is similar to wax lubes, but thinner (meaning less build-up). That's pretty much the way it works: It forms a relatively dry, persistent, water-repellant (the first review is very inaccurate) coating that keeps the chain clean (like wax). But since it's viscosity is much thinner it lubricates more effectively than wax (though not quite as well as the best oil lubes).

Demonde is the only lube I've found that has successfully synthesized the advantages of oil and wax lubes while eliminating disadvantages of both. And, yes as others have mentioned, the odor is strangely appealing (it smells like an evergreen candle combine with new plastic). The only real drawback is price, but that's only a minor quibble for a lube that manages to stay and lubricate.

Strengths:smells outrageous! Like something you'd like to eat?!!
Weaknesses:chain rusts, squeaks, grinds. Attracts dirt and doesn't shed it.
Similar Products Used:Pedros syn. WL. Finish Line. Boeshield. ProLink.
Bike Setup:Fisher Cronus race equipped
Bottom Line:Was told about this product through an old biking veteran. Gave it my best try with a brand new chain completely stripped of all contaminants. Rode it hard for a couple of weeks getting thick, sludge on chainrings and pulleys and a nice coat of orange rust on the links. Yes, I put alot on and I let it dry overnight. The last straw was a 24-hour race in wet conditions where I've never heard such a horrendous GRIND! Threw the $30.00 chain away and found my ultimate solution...ProLink. Read those reviews. I would never recommend this to a mountain biker (this is MTBR, right?) May work on a road bike...

Strengths:Excelent chain protection in wet, muddy, dry, hot, or cold conditions. Lasts for several rides.
Weaknesses:Smells kinda funny.
Similar Products Used:White Lighning, Schwinn chain lube, 3 in 1 oil
Bike Setup:Homegrown (XTR, SID, Sun rims)
Bottom Line:Ripping through your stereotypical Eastern trail (mud, hub-deep creek crossings, lots of grass, and pleny of tree bark) makes keeping your drivetrain spinnin' good almost impossible. Dumonde Tech is the only chain lube I've used that puts up to this kind of abuse several times a week and through several races before needing re-applied. I've used the green and the yellow(Lite). The green lasts longer and I didn't see any benifits in using the Lite.

Weaknesses:The smell is addictive.
