Couldn't get readily here so I called the distributor and bought a box to split with my riders. Not only have they been converted but the LBSs started to carry it. Clean the chain, put it on and ride the next day. Great for dispersing water after riding in the rain. Once I came across this product no other research was necessary, one stop shopping, great all around chain and cable lube. | | Weaknesses: | As with all "do it all" lubes, clean and re-apply after severe wet and muddy conditions. $25.00 | | Strengths: | A truly top-shelf lube. My review is on the big can of aerosol spray lube. | | Weaknesses: | My can is slow to shut off. When I release the knob on the spray can it takes a couple seconds to stop spraying lube. But this might just be a bad can and my usual luck. You might take a couple test-sprays at the shop you're buying it at to make sure it isn't typical of these cans. But the product itself is amazing. I'm gonna withhold one flamin' chili based on my experience with my particular can because of the slow shut off. But like I said, maybe I just got a bum can. | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning, Pro Lube, Pedros, Chain Wax, you name it. | | Bike Setup: | Doesn't matter | | Bottom Line: | Make sure that if you buy this lube that you clean your chain really, really well. Then apply it, wait a couple hours before riding and then do NOT reapply it for a long time! I made the mistake of thinking this stuff was like all the other cheap-ass, over-priced lubes out there that make claims of lasting a long time only to wear off after a couple rides. This stuff really does last a while. I ended up spraying my chain prior to each ride for about 5 or 6 rides and ended up with a bunch of build up. But I cleaned the chain and applied it correctly and now I'm back in business. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I did all the proper chain prep and follow the instructions to a T, but it just doesn't last, and regardless of all the claims, washes off rather easily.
I definitely rank it over the Pedro's wax lubes, but I think I will get White Lightning after this bottle is gone, I can get about twice as many rides out of one lubing with that (which still isn't a lot, but the dry lubes are worth it to me). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Los Angeles, CA, USA Date Reviewed: December 14, 2005 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | It penetrates well, it's a water displacer and rust preventer, it lasts longer than other lubes and holds up very well in sloppy conditions, it stays fairly clean in dry conditions and decently clean in sloppier conditions, it's available in both aerosol and the typical "drip" bottles, it also works well on derailleurs, pivots, etc. | | Weaknesses: | Works best when it's given at least 2 hrs to dry (after which excess is wiped off.) This means it's not conducive to using right before you ride (although I sometimes do this in a pinch.) | | Similar Products Used: | Pro Gold, White Lightning, Rock'n'Roll, Tri-flow. | | Bottom Line: | I recently tried a bunch of different chain lubes (ProGold, White Lightning, Tri-flow, Boeshield T-9, Rock-n-Roll, etc.) I found that the "cleaner" lubes, while being okay for dry conditions, did not hold up well in wet conditions. ProGold was the "cleanest" lube (thin, easy to apply, did not gunk up at all) but it did not hold up well in wetter conditions at ALL. The "typical" wax based lubes tend not to last too well in wet, muddy conditions either. The one lube that in my experience had the best overall performance was Boeshield T-9.
Boeshield is not as clean as the cleanest lubes (like ProGold) but it's really not too bad -- it does get a little gunky in wet conditions, but it's not nearly as bad as other lubes in this respect, and in dry conditions it actually stays relatively clean. Of all the lubes I tried, The Boeshield held up the best in sloppy conditions -- it's the only one that could get a bit muddy and still remain lubed after the mud washed off and/or dried. The other lubes all resulted in a squeaking chain after sloppy conditions, but not the Boeshield.
With the Boeshield, after a dirty ride I can blast the hose over the chain and wipe it down in order to do a "quick" cleaning. Unlike other lubes, the chain is still generally lubed after I do this (although I like to relube at this point just to be thorough.)
While my tests were by no means "scientific," I did try to give each lube a decent amount of time before formulating any opinion. I used each lube over a period of time while riding in the same general areas, sometimes going through more than one bottle before switching. In the end, the Boeshield ended up being the one I am currently sticking with. It penetrates well, it's a water displacer and rust preventer, it lasts longer than other lubes and holds up well in sloppy conditions, and it stays fairly clean in dry conditions and decently clean in sloppier conditions. It also works well for derailleurs, pivots, etc.
The one thing that I 'thought' would be a problem with Boeshield is that you're supposed to let it dry for two hours, then wipe the excess off before using it. Apparently, the solvent that it uses in order to achieve good penetration takes a while to dry. I thought this would be a problem, but it turns out that it's not hard to get in the habit of cleaning or lubing the chain AFTER a ride rather than right before. That said, I do sometimes lube, wipe, and ride without giving it the full drying time and it still seems to work okay -- it just gets a little more dirty.
There are a lot of differing opinions on chain lube, so you need to try them yourself to see which works best for you given your specific needs and riding conditions. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$9.00 | | Purchased At: | San Luis Motorsports | | Strengths: | LONGER LASTING. No more f#%&!^g re-lubing mid-ride. Tried a handful of overpriced "bicycle specific" so-called chain lubes, and found myself either having to re-lube after about 10-15 miles or listen to a noisy, lousy shifting drivetrain. F-That. I started to look at what MXers use. After all, how many dirtbike owners do you see lubing their chains every 15-20 miles? "Bicycle" chain lubes SUCK! A friend turned me on to Boeshield and it sold me. I figured if it will keep a chain clean and lubed on an XR250 for a hundred miles then... MORE COST EFFECTIVE. I paid 9 bucks incl/tax for a 12oz can 2 years ago, and I'm still using it. CLEAN. Cleaner than most other "viscous" chain oils. | | Weaknesses: | Needs to dry overnight. Don't bother applying it at the trailhead 5mins before a ride. It'll just make your chain a dirt magnet. Expensive if purchased from LBS ($8USD for 4oz!?). If you actually enjoy carrying "one more thing" in your pack & lubing your chain in the middle of a ride then you should look elsewhere. | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning (never again) Finish Line w/teflon (see above) Tri-flow (great, but dirt magnet) Pedro's Ice Wax (foamy aerosol that's like putting shaving cream on your chain, your pants, your carpet, your...) Motor Oil (stupid, yes, but I was desperate) Maxima Chain Wax (another great MX-MTB lube) MFR Chain Lube (it's PROLINK Chain Lube in a VERY cost effective size). Check ProGold's website under motorcyle products. | | Bike Setup: | 15 month old Shimano HG93 MTB chain. 2200 mile old XT chainrings & cogset. | | Bottom Line: | Now I can lube my chain around "whenever". (Usually every second or third ride, 30-50 miles). A can of this stuff lasts a looong time. Still using the same one I bought 2 years ago. A bargain (compared to the LBS) if you buy it from your Yamaha dealer. Works better than WD-40 for things around the house. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$15.00 | | Purchased At: | Several Bike Shops | | Strengths: | Does a good job, keeps the drive chain quiet and stays on in wet weather. Mud will take it off but mud will take all lubes off because of the abrasive action of the sand in the mud. | | Weaknesses: | Having to wait overnight. | | Similar Products Used: | About every other kind of lube there is. | | Bike Setup: | I have several. | | Bottom Line: | Other than the fact you have to wait overnight to use your bike this stuff is flawless. The best way to put it on is put it in a chain cleaner and clean your chain with it. The solvent in the liquid form will disolve the dried on lube and the brushes on the chain cleaner will get any dirt off of your chain.
No lube will keep the dirt off your chain, but this seems to attract less dirt than others. I know white lightning claims that it self cleans, but as it is cleaning it is also falling off your chain.
I get a lot more life out of chains than with any other product. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This stuff is the best, especially in the wet, hey, I live in Scotland, you can't avoid it. A couple of comments:
Give it time (to work). The only time I've found it makes the chain dirty is (a) when the chain is new or (b) when you change over from another lube. In both cases it takes a couple of applications for it to work all the old lube out and the new stuff in. For these rides the chain ends up dirty. After that it's clean as a whistle.
Give it time (to dry). Leave it to dry overnight.
Give it time (to arrive). I got hooked on the stuff living in the States and when I moved back to Scotland, I couln't find anyone who stocks it over here. Eventually I got a big aerosol can of the stuff but only by protracted emails to a marina in the Canary Islands (no kidding) who seem to be the agents for Europe. It cost the equivalent of 22 Euros. Expensive but the can will last for years. Boeshield you have a great product. Get yourself some more agents in Europe!!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

| | Weaknesses: | Isn't easy to apply, without it running all over, to places you don't want it to go. It attracts dirt worse than White Lightning. Doesn't make a good chain lube ( in our local dusty conditions.) | | Similar Products Used: | White Lightning( good for the chain in summer, but not much else), Finish Line (dries out and gets sticky in just a few days), WD-40 (good self cleaning winter wet lube), 3 in 1 Oil ( dries up like the finish line and atracts dirt) and many others; I can't remember them all. | | Bike Setup: | 2003 FSRxc frame and "other parts". | | Bottom Line: | Its not a bad lube and works well in many places on my bike, however I don't think its all that good on the chain. When I used White Lightning it did "build up" but it didn't atract the dirt the way the Boeshield does. I followed the instructions; I applied it to the chain and let it dry over night, then wiped off the excess with an old tee-shirt in the morning. After doing this three times my chain sounds like its full of sand and I can't get it to wash out. I never had this problem with the White Lightning(well...not nearly as bad). I hate the fact that the manufacture claims this to be a "dry" and "clean" product, because it simply isn't. The chain is sticky - oh yeah I followed the instructions. There is lots of black gunk on your chain. I wipe it after every ride and it is still full of black gunk. In order to keep it clean you would have to do all of your riding in a sanitized, dust free, sealed room. I have used several other products - almost all of which are much cleaner than this. | | Weaknesses: | Doesn't seem to work too well in dusty or soaking wet conditions | | Bottom Line: | This stuff is a wax, and it dries into a very tough film. It lubricates well and stays on for quite a long time compared to some of the other stuff I've used. One application of Boeshield's lube can last me about 50-75 miles. It's a bit shorter interval b/c I ride in very dry conditions and cross numerous streams during my rides. Hey I agree with Glad here: you need to give Boeshield the time to dry, for me 2 hours (in the summer) or overnight is usaally more than enough. I use Boeshield for at least 5 yrs now, and I love it: lubes forever, completely protects your chain against rust, rain, makes it shift like a dream and it lasts forever. I use petroleum to clean my chain first (hey Glad, I like the smell of petroleum ;-), then spray Boeshield on the chain, so the chain is soaked in it and can absorp the Boeshield, then I take an old rag (old MTB T-shirt ;-) and wipe the chain completely dry on the outside. Like this the Boeshield on the inside of the chain will dry much faster ... time to ride and forget about your chain ... Boeshield Rules !! | Overall Rating: |

This stuff is the she-yot, and it's a shame that it's so consistently maligned. The problem I think everyone has, and the product's main shortcoming is: it takes forever to dry -- like 2+ days! Take the chain off the bike, clean it, drench it with Boeshield, and hang it up to drip dry. DO NOT RIDE ON IT UNTIL THE NASTY PETROLIUM STENCH (it's ONLY other flaw) DISSIPATES COMPLETELY. This may be a pain, but it is worth it. If allowed to really dry, you won't attract grit, and you won't have to lube again for a LONG time -- water or no water. So...2 days to dry is kind of a hassle, and it stinks pretty badly, but once on there, it is SO much better-performing than any other lube I've tried (quite a few!), that I'm still throwing five flaming wads. So there. | Overall Rating: |

I've been using Boeshield for several months now, and while I really like it's lubricating qualities on the chain, it seems to build up incredible amounts of gunk on the derailleur pullies. I've tried letting it dry overnight and then wiping off the excess, but it still seems to result in lots of waxy buildup with dirt that I then have to clean off with mineral spirits. Fortunately I use a Sachs PC-61 so removal is not hard, but I think I'll try something else and see if I can avoid the buildup on the pullies. Good lube but it gets dirty fast. | Overall Rating: |

I've tried them all - the old Pedro's, Krytech, White Lightning, etc., etc. For riding in the wet, muddy, New England backcountry Boeshield is the only thing that lasts. The others wash off at the first dousing. And, nevermind a dry, noisy chain - bad shifting, chain suck etc., etc.!! Also, each application of Boeshield thoroughly cleans and lubes the chain. I'd advise wiping the chain throroughly, after application. Otherwise the stuff gets real gummy

Out of all of the lubricants that I have used on my chain in the past three years of working at a bike shop, I have come to the conclusion that Boeshield is BY FAR THE BEST available. With Pedro's Ice Wax(shortest lasting), White Lightning, and Krytech, I can go to the trails and ride the jumps for a few hours for maybe 2-4 days and my chain is totally dry with the bushings rattling. With Boeshield, I can go for weeks of riding just about every day at the trails in the dust and dirt without re-applying it. It lubricates just as smooth, goes on dry, and doesn't attract dirt - just like the others, but lasts literally 10 times longer. | Overall Rating: |

When it has dried for a while I lube it with T-9, let it dry overnight, wipe it down, and then re-install it. This keeps my rings and cogs gunk free and my chain very clean and slick. The T-9 dries well and dosn't attract dirt or mud and lasts for a few rides. It lasts better than White Lightning. without a doubt, Boeshield is a good if not fine product. In particular, its ability to penetrate, dry, and leave a thin protective effective film. Like a lot of other racers, I use it on a number of parts including the drivetrain. Many of the racers, or team mechanics use only products that they are confident with. Again, I've seen many Boeshield cans and bottles in their vans. While I'm sure Mr. Bruce did some pretty extensive testing, the likes of which would embarass UL, Sandia Labs, not to mention Pee Wee Herman, I'm not sure that Boeshield suddenly deserves a one rating. And while I'm sure that this will be the end for Boeshield - now that every one of us will be running down to buy Corrosion Block - maybe they'll survive somehow. And even though Bruce was afraid to switch, down here we're all glad he had the courage to do so. Congradulations Bruce but learn how to post. | Overall Rating: |

Since Boeshield eventually sets up it is not nearly as nasty as CorrosionX or ACF50, two similar products that seem to drip forever. I use what was left over as chainlube and it works very well. I apply it the day before each ride so it has time to set up then wipe off any excess. Otherwise, lubricity and cleanliness seems adequate for extended service intervals. The rate of dirt pickup is THE most favorable of all the lubes I have used. Previous lubes: Motorcycle ( i.e. Blue Label ) (good lubricity, very bad dirt pickup); Triflow; Finishline; Pedro's (MTB, Road, Extra Dry). I don't think one would classify Boeshield as a 'Dry' lube. For the rides here, which are dry and very dusty, Boeshield offers just the right amount of lubrication and dust attraction. Both the FinishLine and White Lightning attract less dust but they need to be reapplied very often. I clean my chain before every reapplication (and you should too considering that dirt+oil=great abrasive) and don't appreciate having to clean my chain every other ride.
