Serfas True 500 Pro Review

Serfas teased us last year with the True 250 light. It was interesting but not quite bright enough for anything but commuting. Well, this year, they doubled the output with the True 500. Now it is bright enough for light trail riding and two or three of these on the bike can get real fun on the trail. Beam pattern is good as it has a spot and a nice wide halo around it. The case and switch ergonomics seem excellent as there is a positive click when activating the switch. Continue reading →

Strengths:    size, weight, brightness, runtime, mounting

Weaknesses:    you must cycle through all modes if you want to go to a brighter setting.

Bottom Line:
What an awesome light for the money! I have been running old school incandescent lights with a battery strapped to the frame for years and finally picked one of these up after reading the reviews around the web. I was not disappointed! This light is as bright as you'll ever need for most types of off road riding. It's a bright white light and a great flood beam pattern with a brighter spot in the middle. I can see far enough down the trail with this to feel confident at 20+ mph on familiar trails. If you're running slower speeds in familiar areas, then this is probably all you'll ever need. If you're running higher speeds in unfamiliar areas, a second light will make you brighter than the sun. I can't say enough good things about this one...hope it lasts forever.

Strengths:    Really Bright, Small, Easy to Use, Lightweight (only 150g with bracket), Charges Quickly (3 hours)

Weaknesses:    I can't think of any!

Bottom Line:
This light is great! It has a really bright beam and the runtime ranges from 1.75 hours (on high) up to 8 hours (on low). I often use this light as a high beam on my helmet and put a dimmer light on my bars. The TSL-500 comes with everything you need (light/battery, quick release bar mount, helmet mount, USB charger, wall outlet adapter) all organized in a nice storage box. I think that the best selling point is that it is so easy to use. The tool free quick release system makes everything so easy (charging, mounting, etc). Just clip it to your bars or helmet and you're ready to roll without the hassle of rubber bands, bulky battery packs and cords. Huge props to Serfas on another amazing product. I would highly recommend this light to anyone that does night riding, from nighttime epics to commuting.

Strengths:    Wow, this puppy is bright!

Weaknesses:    None so far.

Bottom Line:
I've been waiting 3 years for this light! I night ride backroads every Tuesday. Recently the LBS owner's wife starting using a Serfes True 1500 on our rides. Needless to say I could no loner see any light coming from my Night Hawk Emmitter with the True 1500 blazzing ahead. I purchased this light hoping to compete, plus for overall safety. After testing this on the road, I finally had cars dim there high-beams when they approched. This was well worth the $150 bucks for the light. What a feeling seeing cars respect my bike light - what a feeling!!! They should too, if you look directly at this light on any of the 4 constant setting you'll be blinded. The fifth setting is the fast pulsating flash mode that uses the brightest setting. This light has 5 light settings despite what is written up about the light on MTBR. When you turn it on, it is in it's brightest setting, push the botton to cycle through from bright to lower intensities and finally flash mode.

Strengths:    Lightweight, Compact, and BRIGHT!

Weaknesses:    None that I've experienced

Bottom Line:
Great light for the price, works well, super bright, all you need for some good ol' night time fun. Easy to mount, helmet bracket is included - which is why I chose the Serfas True 500. I prefer riding with the light mounted to the helmet so you can see where you are going. The box is nice for storage too.
