Strengths: - Very cheap
- Pretty wide flood area
- Quite bright
- Yellow-orange light gives you a warm and cheery feelingWeaknesses: - Temperamental: cables melted and replacement stopped working after 3-4 uses
- Difficult to fix to bars securely
- Heavy battery (fits into most drink bottle holders)
- No helmet mount
- Rubber spacers on handlebar mount fall out easily
- Cables disengage if not taped upBottom Line: This was the first light I had ever owned for night riding and I was pretty impressed with the brightness of the light and the size of the area it lit up. The handlebar clamp is not very well designed and tends to loosen up when going down bumpy tracks. The battery is also very heavy, but these weren't big problems and overall, I was happy with the light.
Then, at the end of winter, after I had been doing a night ride maybe twice a week, the cable melted where it joins into the light and smoke started pouring out. Got a new light and battery on warranty, but only used it 3-4 times over the summer. Even though I kept it fully charged and tested it every now and again, one night the light simply did not start, resulting in a long and scary ride home through the bush in the dark!
Given that I have had two lights that have broken very quickly in spite of careful treatment, I would suggest avoiding the Nightsport Star. You really get what you pay for here.
