Product Description

The Light & Motion Urban 550 Quartz packs a powerful 550 lumen output, to light up the streets on your commute home, or the singletrack on your local night rides. Lightweight and dependable, the Urban 550 packs the power and performance of a race light with the size of a commuter, handlebar light. Three output settings, plus a flash mode, produce a range of light from 200 to 550 lumens.

Light & Motion Urban 550 Pro Review

The Urban was one of our favorite lights last year as it delivered an honest 500 lumens in an incognito unit. This year, claimed output is bumped up to 550 lumens and we measured their output at 604 lumens. The mountain biker still cannot turn the side lights off but that’s not a big concern when using this as a helmet light (since it won’t bother the rider). But it remains as one of the lightest units at 113 grams that can pack a 600 lumen punch. Continue reading →

Strengths:    Very bright light for its weight, with a nice focused beam. Easy to install and remove, as well as charge. Sidelights are a nice feature for commuters.

Weaknesses:    Longer run times would be nice. Battery on mine appears to be wearing out after about 2.5 years of regular use (commuting 3-4 days/week year round).

Bottom Line:
This is nearly the ideal commuter bike light, IMHO. It is light weight, easy to mount and remove, simple to operate and charge, and relatively inexpensive. I "upgraded" my Urban 500 with a Taz 1000 for the extra lumens, but went back to using the Urban because it seemed nearly as bright with half the weight. Unfortunately, the battery on mine seems to wearing out and fixing it would cost about half the price of a new one. I have gotten plenty of use out of it, however, commuting 3-4 days/week year round on a 31-mile route with the light running about 2:20 hours/day.

Strengths:    Very bright, easy mounting, comes with a helmet mount, straight up amazing, rechargeable with usb.

Weaknesses:    Can't think of anything I don't like.

Bottom Line:
This is a pretty good review on youtube about the 550 and a couple other lights from light and motion. http://youtu.be/EAKA1vBOF_8
