Bottom Line:I'm a roady of 35 years & recommend this computer for roadies. I have had my Vetta VHR50 for about 8 years. It has always worked well. My negative comment is about the belt. Soon after purchase of monitor I began using my Polar belt with the Vetta VHR50 and find it to be much more responsive, I recommend the Polar over the Vetta belt.
My only need has been batteries, one for computer one for belt.

Bottom Line:I like to have only one cyclometer on my handlebar und i like position over the stem,
where it is out of the way. The number of functions are ok for that price.
But after some month i lost 2 of 4 buttons and it's hard using the vetta. Lately the batterie
loses contact all the time, or the hole think crashes without any reason. I guess that makes

Bottom Line:Junk. Great concept though. I wish someone would do this right. I dislike the wrist worn models and don't like attaching two items to my handlebars. The vibrations of off-road riding causes the thin metal plates that contact the battery to flatten. The battery no longer makes consistent contact and the unit stops functioning. I bent the plates back several times and eventually the plate broke in two. I then soldered a wire to the plate and put in a piece of foam to press the battery to the contacts. Worked great until I washed the unit with my clothes. :) Oops. Bye bye VR25.

Bottom Line:

Bought the HR-50 in early '96 and thought it was a good deal ($100 compared to $150 in other catalogs). Actually bought one for me and one for my wife. My HRM failed to work out of the box and sent it back. they took care of me relatively fast and the one they sent me worked as did my wife's. They both worked for just about one year until my wife's stopped working. Sent hers back and was taken care of under warranty. Actually received two from Vetta and was going to send one back, but my unit lost a button (after the warranty expired). Vetta, of course would not help me at all due to the expired warranty, so I decided not to send the other one back. I sent the extra new unit to my brother (who probably does not use it at all) and decided I could make mine work with a paper clip to change modes. It seemed to work well over the next year, even after changing the battery once. I recently had to change the chest transmitter battery and it worked for two weeks and died.I called Nashbar and Colorado Cyclist (as well as several local runners and cyclists) and asked their opinion of Polar vs. the others. Everyone recommended Polar. Polar's chest transmitter (2 year warranty, and will probably last 3-4 years) is sealed, so no moisture can get in. When the battery dies after the warranty expires, you send it back to Polar and the send you another for $40. Seems pricey, but it is worth the extra headaches and if you do the math, it probably will be more cost effective in the long run (if you have to buy a whole new HR monitor every 2-3 years). I chose the Polar Protrainer NV ($140 at Colorado Cyclist, $150 at Nashbar), but I recommend any Polar--pick the one that fits your needs vs. budget.Don't buy a combination HR monitor/bike computer. If you need a HR monitor, buy a Polar. If you need a bike computer, buy a good cordless computer like the Cateye Cordless or Cordless2 (I own one and like it). Even though I don't like the Vetta HR-50, I did like my Vetta C500 cordless computer (older, square model). I still use this computer even after 5 years and a broken fork mount--I just zip tie the sensor to the fork.I give the HR-50 a one rating, only because I can't give it a zero. P.S. I have one or two spare (new) handlebar mounts for my old HR-50 if someone wants them. Maybe a trade for something.

Bought a VHR-50 in Nov 98 for just S$80/=(Great Bargain!!!). I think it is one of the best device right behind the Polars(pricey!!!!). It works well and the gripe I have about it that the HR Sensor is not responsive enough. Also, the single mode button on the left side of the meter has dropped out. These points aside, I think it is a great deal if you use it right and take good care of it.Can anyone tell me how to get it fixed in Singapore? Appreciate if someone out there can do so.

I am a chronic cross-trainer, riding 120 miles per week and running 40 miles per week. Being frugal, I purchased a Vetta product, while a fellow runner, Bill, bought the Polar Product. Bill's unit, a polar, outperforms my Vetta by a lot. In fact, if Bill and I run together his Polar interferes with my Vetta, but his Polar unit is unaffected. Next: when trail running, my Vetta is easily jostled by jumps over trees and logs and sharp inclines and so when you are finished your run shows that you have a certain time under your training rate you programmed. This is an error, of course, unless I really can run up a 35% grade with a HR of 112. For the price: it is a good unit as it is waterproof and pretty hardy, but it is easily influenced by all kinds of EMI ranging from CB's, to Cell PHones, to strong power lines. And Lastly, call Vetta at 800 Go Vetta and you'll talk to Mandy. Mandy doesn't answer her phone, is unaccommodating, doesn't tell you where you can get replacement parts and is quick to tell you that they have no inventory on hand to service us whatsoever. So to buy a Vetta is to be left to the wolves. Worst customer service and support I have experienced in my adult life.

I am a road rider and just happened upon this site. I have owned my VHR50 for a couple of years now and until this past month it has worked perfectly in every regard. I had a serious crash last year which put me in the hospital and although the VHR50 took the weight of the crash (!!!!) and was terribly scatched it continued to work perfectly. I have logged about 3000+ miles ,including 2 California AIDS Rides, with this computer. On this last AIDS ride the top button popped off at the start of the ride. I tape it down and the unit continued to work until it was soaked during one day on the ride where we had to ride for about 50 miles or so in the rain. Although I appreciated the fact that the speedo suddenly showed me doing 194mph uphill (!) that was the last of my VHR50. Wish I knew where to get it fixed. Or, if anyone has any alternative HRM ideas I would be gald to hear of them.

I have two complaints. The first is that the HR-50 periodically resets during a training ride which is very frustrating, especially when I need the data to measure performance improvements. Secondly, the top button fell off which makes it very difficult to retrieve the data. I have rigged up a make-shift top button for now. My efforts to get replacements parts from Vetta USA proved to be useless. Does anyone have any information on where I may purchase replacement parts?

I did notice that it doesn't read well until my skin sweats a bit. It can be solved by using a little KY jelly on the back of the monitor. You just need to provide a good electrical contact. So far, so good.

I purchased my VHR 50 Feb '96 ($99 at Calif superstore!!) and used it for 1 1/2 racing seasons. It worked fine for first 4 months. Then, I had to return the chest strap because the Gasket to seal out moisture around the Batt was not installed correctly at the factory. Got a replacement in 2 weeks, the people were very quick to help me. Lasted 4 more months befor more minor problems in the unit arose (buttons fell off, did not work smoothly, etc). I eventually gave it to a friend (he has 3 kids so I help him in small ways) and now I use a Polar X-trainer. Much more priecy but the reliability is worth it. I give 3 stars because it did serve me for 1 1/2 seasons and now is serving my friend.

I got my VHR50 Lumina in December 1996, and the problems never stopped. First the HR monitor only worked on occassion. Then after about two months, usage of the Lumina button began to cause the entire computer to erase all data and freeze for a few moments; and soon after that problem the HR zone alarm stopped working all together. About four months into my ownership, the buttons began to fall of, which I temporarily remedied by using small pieces of electrical tape custom cut to allow me to press the buttons. The last problem I had with it was the best; it simply fell out of the handlebar holder while I was riding!! From now on I'll spend my $110.00 on a Polar, the best use for the VHR50 is as a fancy cyclocomputer, with the HR monitor left at home! I relutantly give this product even one star, but it did serve as a cool attention getter when it was new!!

I was impressed by the post below by Vetta USA. I remember the self-serving comments a few months back by the big shot at Supergo and was enraged because this guy had no intention of really acknowledging there was a problem. It appears Vetta has acknolwedged that there is a problem and hopefully will succeed in their attempts at much better quality control. On with the review. I'm on my second HRM-50. The second one was been working fine but it's only got around 400K and a month or so on it. The first one worked fine for a while. Then one of the buttons fell off and I had to reset the thing with a twig or other sharp object. What a pain in the ass! I had a ride a few months ago which was memorable. The HR feature was fine, but the unit was telling me I was getting speeds up to 300km/hr. My average for that day was something like 80km/hr and I gained almost 5K on total distance on my friends that rode side by side with me most of the day.I took it back where I got it and the new one is fine for now. In all honesty, I've been looking quite closely at the Polar combo HRM/bike puter combo. Real expensive but I figure it'll stand the test of time. WHEN THE VETTA IS WORKING, I like it. It tells me everything I need to know and doesn't re-set itslf easily like that piece of s**t from Cateye. It's got a much better wrist mount than Cateye as well. I think 3 chilis is fair. I hope this one doesn't break down. Next time I'll get a refund and put the $$$ towards the Polar!

I've had an HR-50 for about a year now and I'm pretty happy with it. I needed a bike computer that could be worn on the wrist when not on the bike (they're too easy to lose otherwise). Previously I owned a Timex Velo watch/bike computer which if I could still get I would.A common fault of the Vetta appears to be that the large button on the front seems to come off. Its attached via a central pin with a couple of springs behind it. Mine came off and I was lucky to find it again. I reinstalled it, minus the springs, and its been fine ever since.Aside from genuinely faultly units, inconsistent HRM readings can be due to: (A) too much chest hair (B) a poor contact on the chest band. Try wetting the back of the unit with saliva before wearing it.If all else fails 1-800-VETTA seem to be quick in resolving problems.

Where should I start? In less than a month I had to return the computer to my local dealer because the HR was not picking up. We checked the batteries only to find out that the o-ring seals were not seated right. Moisture from sweat
leaked into the battery case. My local dealer gave me a replacement after we checked all their stock transmitters. All of them have tweaked 0-ring seals!
We did our best to seal them properly, and I was sent home feeling much better.
In less than a year, the freakin' problem showed up again. Finally, Vetta was kind enough to send me a newer model transmitter, which was by far better than the one I had. No problemos ever since. These computers are nice and flush that they could take a good beating whenever you dump the bike!

After reading some of these reviews I was going to return it, but the store where the unit was purchased was over two hours away. I went to Mountain Equipmwent Co-op in Toronto and got a 1-800 number: 1-800-go-vetta. I caled explained the problem and sent the unit off to them. About two weeks later I received a completely new unit that DOES work. I've yet to put it on my bike to test the speed and odo functions, but the HRM works just fine now.

There isn't a lot to add to the other comments, only that much: IT'S A GIGANTIC PIECE OF JUNK! After half a year it started falsly displaying speed and heart rate, after a year it failed completely. Never ever another VETTA product.

My VHR50 keeps me riding very hard. When I'm tired on a ride, I'll look down and the monitor never shows a distance greater than around 15 miles. I then figure it must be time to pick up the pace. The monitor continually resets itself during rides. After one year on the bike, my monitor shows a total of three miles on the odometer. It's time to send this VHR50 back and get something that works.

Through my riding life I had purchased many Computers. Like alwayse they all
failed because the wires alwayse snapped. I set a goal for myself to find the computer that will survive more than one season of hard off road biking. My search for the perfect computer seemed to be a long and tedious ordiel. With nearly two hundred, Canadian hard earned dollars spent on computers for my bike I started to give up hope but in the summer of 96 I purchased a VETTA C-5 computer from my good friends a Cyclepath. They understood my dilema and promised me that this will be the last computer I will ever buy. I didn't believe them because that's exactly what they said the last time. Following the instructions on how to mount the computer properly I looked at my new computer and I had a feeling that this is the one. Through the summer of 96 the VETTA C-5 and I seemed to have a promising future. It is the winter of 1997 and I am disapointed to say that my VETTA computer had failed miserabl like many other computers in the past. With only THREE months of riding the wire traveling down to the sensor broke inside. I was not able to get a replacement because this part was not a part of the VETTA computer. That was the explanation I got from Cyclepath. In order to fix my computer I would have to buy a new computer and then I would have a extra unwanted computer. But I don't have the money to throw around. As a result I will never buy another computer from any company until they lower the price of their wireless computers. I came to a conclusion why all my computers alwase failed because the wires alwayse broke or snapped. The reason is because that is how you people make your money. So until you improve or solve this problem I will never buy your computers. I am not the only one with this problem.

I bought a vetta hr-50 six month ago.
It functions well and it is also precise as regarding speed or heart rate.
Therefore five stars for performances.
DEFECTS:
In my opinion the case and buttons are very poor and there is also a little bug: when you push the light button, after the light goes down, the heart rate vanishes and it takes a few seconds to appear again.(two stars).
Averaging taking into account the price four stars

I have the HR-50 for a year now at my road-bike.
I like it first and it worked fine, but after a while I lost the
first button and now I've lost nearly all buttons and it's really hard to
use it without it's buttons.
The rest is still working, but I don't know how long..

I'm wearing a Vetta heart Rate monitor for about a year.
In the beginning it didn't work, because the chest-band was defect.
I figured that out when I used the watch together with a Polar band.
My dealer (Roger Vink, Sint-Gillis-Waas) gave me a new one,
so I can use it now with great pleasure.
It works like I wanted it to do...

I ditched my HR50 some months ago now it did all sorts of crazy things ie change to MPH and reset in the middle of a ride. Had a replacement unit it lasted even less time. The electronics while nicely laid out obviously aren't very durable.

Being that this was the first heart-rate monitor I bought, I though
it was a good investment. That was until I relized it's short-commings.
First, there is no average heart-rate function. Second, It was inconsistent,
one moment it was on and the next it stopped working. Thirdly, and for
no reason at all, the entire system would shut down and clear all settings.
This was not a good investment. There was inadequate return for the money
spent.

I was happy with the inital purchase but since then I've had nothing but problems.
The computer works, but the heart rate monitor is a piece of trash. I bought a
polar monitor and it works fine with the vetta computer. Don't waste your money,
buy a polar.

I loved this product when I first got it. It has everything I need except an
altimeter.

But after 10 months the heart rate monitor part started giving weird readings
or none at all. I even shaved my chest hair to try to fix it!!

Vetta replaced the unit quickly, but the new system seems to have HRM issues too.

Really too bad, 'cuz this was one sweet unit, and priced right too.

I have been the unhappy owner of a VETTA computer for about 4 months. At first I was very happy with my purchase. Then my heart monitor started giving me false data an example: after riding for 4 hard hours on a long and grinding uphill it gave me a heart rate of 42 pulses per minute. I might be in excellent shape but my name isn't Indurain. Then I started making excellent speed records. On a local downhill I did a magnificent 993 km/h. It was 993 and not 99.3 because there screen makes it very clear by using smaller numbers for the decimals. Now I have started wearing a spoiler on my helmet so I would not go balistic. Unless you want to impress your friends with super speeds and low heart rates this is not the computer to buy. But if you want something other than a toy for flirting buy a Polar. And changing the batteries does not help. I hope you don't make the same error as me.

I bought the initial version of this product and it sucked. At random moments
the heart rate would show rates of 215 of nothing at all. It had a lot of
good features except that the monitor was so bad the features were pretty
much useless. I took one back thinking it was just bad and the replacement
was just as big a piece of trash. I traded it back in for a Polar and have been
happy since.

The thing does not work. The sensor for the Hrm is at the very best, imprecise. I tried one last year. It worked only on hot and humid days, and the signal pickup was erratic. Ask your friendly shop if they had any returns of Vetta products. At the shop where I do my business they have had a lot of returns from Vetta computers and HRM. Too bad because the HR50) looks really nice. Buy a polar, work in wet, dry, hot or cold.
