Purchased At:Online direct from Mudmachine
Strengths:Looks great. Sturdy. Quiet.
Weaknesses:A little pricey. Had to grind metal bracket down for front fender install.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:FSR XC
Bottom Line:First, I would like to say that I never tried to contact Mudmachine for support. I sort of didn't have time before my trip home from NJ to Belize. Well, the streets can get pretty muddy here so I knew I wanted to get fenders to keep me clean. My bike is basically my vehicle here on the island. I have both the front free ride and rear fenders. I know this review is for the front fender only, but I am going to put the total experience here, and copy it to the rear fender review as well.

Ok, the real deal is that the metal bracket for the front fender did not fit in the groove on the bottom of my fork properly, but it was pretty close. I happened to have a grinder nearby so I just made the proper adjustments. The metal bracket is very sturdy so the small amount of bending and cutting I had to do was no problem. The starnut and everything thing else installation-wise went beautifully.

I can do trials stuff so I immediately took the bike to the street and started hammering it as hard as I could. These fenders are pretty solid and only made slight noise even on the hardest drop offs. No noise with regular riding. I have ridden them over some trails to see if they would change my mind, but they didn't have any problem there.

Trials skills make XC easy. I can't tell you how they do in a crash as I don't really fall too often anymore.

Ok, the bad news for me is that I absolutely need the rear fender to keep me clean here in Belize. I took a ride only one block (about 400 meters) and didn't even go that fast and when I got off to look, I had some mud speckles on my butt and a few on my shirt near the lower end (only in the back, the front is clean). Higher up on my back was clean. I think the rear fender needs to be at least 2 inches longer to prevent the splatter further. Maybe there would have been more mud if I didn't have the fender. I can tell that if it is raining out I will get a wet ass. I don't want to go everywhere with mud on my ass either. I think the fender is great, but it is not getting my primary need done properly. I gave the rear a 2 because I was really looking to stay clean when I go out around here. I will give the front fender the highest rating because it is getting its job done right.

Favorite Trail:the long and winding road
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:www.mudmachine.com
Strengths:Before mudmachine, my face was covered in road slime. After mudmachine, my entire front body stayed dry and dirt free. You save money in the long-run by not having to do as many loads of laundry! It's worth it
Weaknesses:absolutely none. Impeccable engineering, truly awesome customer service. If you have a question, don't hesitate to email the mudmachine crowd. Barb is awesome! They'll fix you up with what you need
Similar Products Used:Simply put, all other fenders are crap
Bike Setup:2nd generation TREK y-11, hope m4 brakes, sid race rear shock, shimano XTR crankset, chris king ISO hubs laced to WTB laserdisc rims, XTR cassette, marzocchi x0fly fork, salsa skewers - THE LIST GOES ON
Bottom Line:If you are worried about road slime on your clothes as you commute to work, to school, etc, then you need this fender. If you are a racer and need to keep the mud out of your face, then you definitely need this fender!

Put it this way: If you want fenders for your bike, then buy mudmachine. Do not look any further, do not read any more reviews. Mudmachine is the best. Go to mudmachine.com and buy your own pair of fenders. If you are hesitant, then email the mudmachine crew. They are incredibly quick to respond (THANKS BARB!), even when they are preparing for their downhill racing expo.

Date Reviewed: March 5, 2002
Favorite Trail:Laural Mountain, Asheville
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $90.00
Purchased At:Direct
Strengths:Strong, good looks, company customer service is outstanding.
Weaknesses:None so far.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock Giant AC 2. Upgraded some minor parts.
Bottom Line:With all the wet weather we were getting here in North Carolina, I decided on purchasing a set of fenders. I looked at a few brands, but kept coming back to the Mud Machine web page. I had never seen a set up close, so I was a little leery in ordering them. They weren't the cheapest fenders on the market either.

I e-mailed Mud Machine and asked them about a mount for my AC 2. Their stock rear fender mounts to the break bosses. They told me they had a adapter for bikes without bosses and told me if I ordered the set, they would through the adapter in at no cost to me. I ordered the set and they sent the off fenders priority mail.

When I got the fenders, I had a little trouble mounting the rear fender. The seat stays were wider than the fender so there was no way to bolt the fender to the adapters that came with the fender. I e-mailed MM again and Brent immediately replied with a solution. The front went on fine. All I had to do was pressed a star nut up from the bottom into the steer tube and bolt the fender on. They also sent me a bunch of stickers.

So far I am very pleased with the fenders performance. I have had a couple bad crashes and the fenders have held up great. It keeps the mud and muck off me and my bike and they look cool. I also can't say enough about the customer service at Mud Machine. Barb and Brent have returned e-mails within hours of sending them, and have made sure I was satisfied with everything.

I would highly recommend these fenders to anyone who is in the market. Help support the little guy. Buy Mud Machine.
