$250.00 | | Purchased At: | catalog | | Strengths: | Old | | Weaknesses: | Old | | Similar Products Used: | Old | | Bottom Line: | I dug this out of the bottom of my junk parts box after it had been in there disused for about ten years. For kicks, I fired up the unit and it struggled to find satellites. While waiting, I stumbled across this site and was shocked to read that anyone is still using it. If you bought this new or second hand recently, you are a fool to think it anywhere near top end hardware. It was first made in 1997 and that was when I initially used it. Then, it worked great, it was top end but now has become an antique. It belongs in a junk box or a gift for a small child. Go spend 200+ current dollars for something recent if you want a GPS unit that is not long overdue for your own junk box. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$300.00 | | Purchased At: | Sporting goods store | | Strengths: | None. | | Weaknesses: | Product will not lock on to satelites after hours of wating | | Bottom Line: | This product is absolutely no good what so ever. If it was used sitting in a boat in the middle of a lake it may work??? But in the bush..nothing. It is almost dangerous to use because when you need it, it does nothing. I am back to using a compass. Very reliable. 2000 XL. Useless. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Highveld, South Africa Date Reviewed: November 29, 2007 | | Duration Product Used: | 2 Years | | Bottom Line: | The Magellan GPS 2000 in 2007 is possibly the worst GPS I have used in my lifetime. New position initialisation takes forever and a day, it loses the waypoints if the batteries are removed for too long, and you have no way of saving waypoints in case batteries are removed except for manually transferring them :-( the user interface was poorly designed and the map feature is only updated everytime you switch to it from another menu. With this experience I doubt if I'll ever purchase another Magellan GPS. Good luck biting your lip and trying to use this GPS for what it was intended. If someone gives you one, you'll know why they gave it away! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Phoenix, AZ Date Reviewed: June 29, 1998 | | Bottom Line: | The Magellan GPS 2000 XL is a rugedized hand-held unit. The one feature that gives this GPS system a distinctive advantage over others is the simplicity of use. The unit allows you to store waypoints and name them. You can then mix and match your waypoints and create routes, or go to any one specifically. I find it difficult to screw-up while using it. The only drawback is that I still need a map and compass as a backup (to feel confident) of what the 2000 XL tells me -- also, what if I accidentally drop the unit! I keep my unit powered-off, and stored in a Zip-Loc bag in a safe place. I take it out only when necessary, like at a crossroad, or a landmark. This is not to be confused with the Cadillac NorthStar System, or any such piece of crap. The GPS 2000 XL is a powerful tool. | Overall Rating: |
