Strengths:    Well engineered. Strong.

Weaknesses:    Bolt problem caused by poor quality metal/supplier has been reconciled by Yakima. Don't understand why the other reviewer felt the need to drop them to 1 chili for that. They have addressed the problem.

Bottom Line:
We have the Spare Time mounted on an '01 Jeep Wrangler, and we love it! It never comes off. Well constructed. This thing is bombproof. The existing reviews make me wonder if they actually own, or have ever used the thing. Would highly recommend. Be aware that for most MTBs you will need a top tube bar in order to safely mount your MTBs.

Greetings from Amazon.com,

We have recently learned that Yakima Products, Inc., in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is issuing a Product Safety Notification in regards to Yakima SpareTime Bicycle Carriers. Our records indicate that you have purchased one of the Yakima SpareTime Bicycle Carriers listed in this recall through the Amazon.com website.

Yakima has determined that two mounting bolts installed on SpareTime products manufactured after October of 2011 may not meet minimum strength requirements as specified in Yakima technical documentation. These bolts could break resulting in bikes being ejected, creating a road hazard to other vehicles which could possibly result in a crash or injury to persons outside the vehicle.

Yakima SpareTimes without identifying characteristics on the bolt are being recalled. If your SpareTime has markings on the bolt head, it is not affected by this recall.

If you determine or suspect that the bolts in your product are not correct as noted above, remove the product from your vehicle and call 1-888-925-4621 to speak with customer service or email sparetimerecall@yakima.com.

We regret the inconvenience this recall has caused you but trust you will understand that the safety of our customers is our highest priority.

Thanks for shopping at Amazon.com.

Strengths:    The spare time is another addition to the Yakima bike racks family. If you own a SUV or a 4x4 with a rear tire mounted on your back, then the spare time is a right thing for you. It can easily fit on to your car’s back and get along with the bolts of your rear tire. It is well built with good quality materials used in manufacturing. The sparetime can properly hold your bikes well without having them come into contact with each other, thus eliminating the risk of getting any scratches. There is another treat as well where it carries two bottle openers as well!

Weaknesses:    The cons from the customers have been more on the usage of the product where it was complained that it did not fit properly on the rear and it was also difficult to fit the tire properly. It should be noted that the tongue of the sparetime can be adjusted to hold the tire and the bikes so you should struggle initially to get to know the right dimensions. Also that fact that the grip on on traditional hard tail types is not very good although it might be achieved with some adjustments, its better to have analysed your bike and vehicle before buying the sparetime.

Bottom Line:
Fair deal!
