Strengths: High Volume, good sidewalls, easy tubeless conversion and cheapWeaknesses: A bit heavy, wear a bit fastBottom Line: I got this for 40$ a piece at speedgoat several years ago, untested, and unreviewed. But considering the 20$ price difference with Pacentis, I took the plunge and ordered a pair.
The tire was very easy to mount and air up tubeless on my 355 rims, with a floor pump. Absolutely the easiest tire Ive ever set up tubeless. No sidewall leaks, no problems whatsoever.
The tire went to the rear, with the Neo Moto 2.3 on the front. Ive only ever used this as a rear tire.
Another note, these tires are tall and have a very high volume. These 2.2s were taller than the 2.3 Neo motos.
Running tubeless at around 25-30 psi, the tires performed very well on hardpack, dry trails. Not so well, but acceptable on wet and loose stuff. Grip was actually better than I expected for the tread pattern. Lowering the pressure to 23psi helped with slow speed technical climbs. Sidewalls are still in good shape (no threads showing or slashes).
My only qualms were that the tire is not a lightweight race tire, and that treadwear is not as good. PErhaps the rubber compound that gives it ample grip is not a long wearing type. But Im now on the second tire, and it too is now practically a slick in the middle tread. At that point, the tire is only for hardpack and roads, and not for a front tire.
Overall, for the price, and the decent grip when new, and the high volume allowing low pressures, its a good tire for the rear of a hardtail or an xc bike that will see a lot of dry trails, nothing too gnarly. Plus points for the easy tubeless set up and nice sturdy sidewalls. Note that the size/height might be problematic on frames with really tight clearances.
