cycles de ORO - Bikeshops, Greensboro, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

Cycles de ORO Bike Shop began it's business life as "Toga Bike Shop" in 1975. The name "Toga" was chosen because founder Robert Kraus had helped start the successful Toga Bike Shop in NY and he thought the name was pretty neat and unusual, however there was no financial or organizational connection to the NYC shop.

Dale Brown joined Robert shortly after start up and through their shared enthusiasm for all aspects of bicycling, they created a shop that fostered a high level of cycling activity and an absolute dedication to quality products & service.

"Toga" started and sponsored Greensboro's first cycling club in modern times and welcomed members from throughout the region. The club, now evolved into the Greensboro Velo Club, is one of the largest and most active in the mid-Atlantic region.

As the Greensboro shop gained some a good regional and even national reputation, some confusion about "which Toga?" started to arise and in the early 1980s, (after a lot of agonizing over which to choose) the shop's name was changed to cycles de ORO, which literally means "Cycles of Gold." This was in reference to the Olympic gold medals and the prevailing bike culture's tradition of using the gold "ORO" color to designate the best components (for instance, the Italian Regina company's top-of-the-line "ORO" chain and "ORO" freewheel.) There also was the neat coincidence that there is an "ORO" at the end of Greensboro, and that there are two "Os" that sort of look like a bicycle (?)

The shop grew but in the mid 1980s, Robert Kraus decided to pursue his own college degrees (ultimately a PHD program at UNC-Chapel Hill.) and he sold his share to Dale. Dale took the helm and has been the President since then...

They have the tools, they have the knowledge and they have some good bikes....fer sure. I know they can only sell/can mainly sell and make money on the biggies like specialized but they also carry some good sleepers/more classic bikes.

The techs really know their stuff...especially the main tech...with glasses I think? Can't remember his name but he dialed in a bent der. hanger almost as fast as some "pro-pro" shops I have been in Seattle/Colorado.

Customer Service

AHHHhhhhhhhh......have seen better. Much better. If you come in ripped with rapha and a classic steel colnago it's all cupcakes and kisses. If I come in "disguised" with a beard and dirty "outback suit" with my crappy commuter....it's a diff. story.

Sad, but I feel this store is full of "pomposity and meh-ness" and basically is for rich Freds...which actually works for them as there is no shortage of that...so much so they moved to their own building...ta-da!

If you want real service without the "looks of contempt" or "talking down" experience...I HIGHLY recommend revolution bikes, recycled cycles or MOB in winston salem.

Well, not if you are fredly I reckon...

This bike shop is very clean and organized. The owner, Dale, is a superbly nice person with a doubt, but I've had my fill of rude, snobbish employees, who don't give a damn if you are customer. I will NEVER go back to this bike shop even if hell froze over!

Customer Service

Average.

I'm a retired airline captain and I've been treated very poorly in the past and for no reason other than I look very young for my age. There is a piss poor atmosphere in that shop of pure arrogance and I would suggest Dale do some house cleaning, if you get my drift!! I can spend my bucks elsewhere!!

There are 4 shops within a 1 mile radius in Greensboro from this shop. CdeO seems to be the typical shop and have most of the stuff you'd need.

Customer Service

Real bad. I went in to buy a new high end FS 29er. Looked at the display bikes for 10 minutes. Nobody came to help me or even spoke to me. Waved at the guy behind the counter and he just nodded and he wasnt doing anything. Maybe only a few people in the shop at the time, so he wasnt busy. I left and ended up spending $3K down the road. Also have been in the shop a few other times for various small things. None of the folks who work there have ever acknowledged that I was in the store.

After 4 different visits, I've decided to stay out of CdeO. Sorry guys, but I like it when the store people at least pretend like I'm important and ask if they can help me. I get a totally different treatment at the T store and the catalog store (P)around the corner.

Looks nice inside, a bit cramped. Seemed to have what I needed on the first trip. Tons of clothes. Personal touch is lacking, at least with one sales clerk.

Customer Service

Well, my experience was really bad. I've been there twice. First time was to get replacement parts and the guy behind the counter acted like it was going to be some big stress to walk me back and show me where they were. There were two folks behind the counter, and neither busted ass to find out what I wanted.

Second time I was shopping for a new full suspension bike fully prepared to drop $3k right then. Service was pretty dismal considering I stood next to the highest MSRP MTBs for a while waiting on the clerk to get off the phone. He didnt really go out of his way to help me or come from behind the desk to see what I might want after he was off the phone. Nobody else was in the store!

Sorry guys. I gave you two chances because you're a locally owned shop. FAIL. Going forward, will spend my big money at the new Trek store and buy piece parts at Performance. You'd think with two bike stores within a mile, they'd try a little harder.

Very nice shop I love to visit and talk with the mechanics.

Customer Service

Steve one of the mechanics maybe one of the best wheel builders I have heard of. Absolutly the best wheels I have ever ridden. True after 12000 miles. When I see other cyclists breaking spokes on their 1200 dollar wheelsets. I NEVER miss a ride.

Dale has a very nice shop. Lots of inventory ranging from beginner to advanced. Tons of accessories. Not as cheap on some things as the chain stores but if you get to know the staff a little, things can be negotiated.

Customer Service

I've always gotten excellent service from everyone there. One example, I took my bike in for a warranty repair. Asked the tech how long it would be because I have to drive almost an hour to get there. They took it in and fixed it while I waited even though they were booked up. I really appreciated the extra effort.

Great selection of bikes and parts. Pricey compared to their neighbor Performance.

Customer Service

Customer Service has to me always been the most important element of a bike shop. I want someone to explain to me why my chain is breaking apart at 500 miles or why my bike is making a certain noise, etc. etc. Cycles De Oro's CS is unpredictable and frequently bad. The service guys make you feel like you're wasting their time and are at times insulting because you lack the knowledge of bikes that they have. Maybe If I rode a 3,000K plus bike they'd be more interested in helping me. They also nickel and dime you for everything.
