    ****CUSTOMER BEWARE****
If I could give Spokes a negative star rating I would. I recently moved to Illinois and as an avid cyclist needed to find a local bike shop near my home. I did my due diligence online and decided on Spokes because of its proximity, though I did have my reservations after reading some of the more detailed negative reviews online. I have a Jamis TrailX Series mountain bike that needed a new headset, bottom bracket, big front chain ring, rear cassette, front shifter, shifter cables, chain and possibly service on the front fork. When I took it in to the shop they gave me a quote for everything, though they were unsure if they could get the right parts for my front fork(Marzocchi Corsa 26"). We decided they would go forward with everything else and wait on the fork service until we could see what parts were available. I asked that they contact me prior to ordering anything for it.

About a week later, I received a call from one of the techs who stated that they had ordered an Enduro kit for my bike, but he didn't want to use it because he was afraid that the some of the parts may actually be detrimental to my fork in the long-run. I appreciated this honesty on his part, but was a little upset that they had gone ahead and ordered parts without informing me. He insured me that I would not be charged for these parts since they were not installing them. Two weeks later I picked my bike up and paid for the service, which came out to $469.89. When I had gotten my bike from the service desk I took the service order up to the front to be rung up and was handed the receipt and service order back before I left. When I got home and looked at the two documents I realized that the total amount owed on both was nearly identical ($469.89 receipt, $469.91 service order). The suspension kit only showed on the service order, but the labor costs had been raised on the receipt to to cover the costs of the parts that were not installed on my bike. When I took the documents back to the shop to point out the discrepancy, the service order was quickly grabbed off the counter, torn up and tossed in the garbage. I was told that the prices on the service order where not accurate and all that mattered was what had been rung up on the receipt. As would be expected I was incensed, but with the service order in pieces in the garbage I had no more recourse to fight for my reimbursement.

After all this I had to bring my bike back in to them multiple times because I was still having issues with the bike shifting properly through the gears on the rear cassette and I was experiencing what I would describe as intermittent "slippage" in my pedals (a feeling that the chain was losing tension at times). I was not charged for these visits, but the shifting and "slippage" issues were not resolved either. Finally, I decided to bring the bike into another shop and was told that not only did Spokes cut my chain too short, but they put a lightly used big ring on the front with some worn teeth (I was charged for new parts). The chain length had caused my rear derailleur to be bent (causing the shifting issues) and the worn teeth on the "new" front big ring where the cause of the slipping I was feeling in my pedals. It will now cost me another $130, on top of the $469 already spent, to rectify the issues incurred by bringing my bike to Spokes in the first place. Spokes is by far the worst bike shop I have ever dealt with, and I strongly suggest that anyone think twice before doing business with them.

The cycle shop is very good but the bikes are more for serious bikers and above my budget as Senior, ( a little:-)

This is the best shop ever!!!

    Customer Service

Customer Service is phenomenal and They go all out for customers. I brought in my Trek and GT for service and purchased my first hardtail stumpjumper from them. They have plenty of knowledge on their bikes and they have great mechanics. I would also like to point out that MO is very helpful with everything. He helped me out with so much things esp. getting my bike fixed & Warranty issues. I would def. buy bikes from them in the future and tell all my friends to go to their shop.

I have been visiting Spokes over the past 4 years. First for service and then for bike and equipment purchases. I have been quite satisfied with the service and the 3 bikes (Cross, Road for the wife and mountain for the daughter) I bought. Mo, the son of the owner is very knowledgeable of the products and what would work well for you. He recommended a frame size smaller than I was looking for in a Cross bike, I took the advice and it worked out very well. I went against his advice on shoe size, decided he was right and he exchanged me to the recommended size with no penalty. Raouf, Mo's father and the owner, is also very knowledgeable although perhaps a little more gruff in his demeanor than Mo. Still a good person when you get to know him.

From the other posts, I see that opinion runs at extremes over the treatment and honesty of the folks at Spokes.

My experience has been good. I trust Raouf and Mo and the others around the shop. They have treated me well. Maybe it is because I have been a repeat buyer. I soon will be dropping some major bucks for a high end road bike and fully expect that the experience will be excellent and that Spokes will stand behind the product.

The selection of high end road bikes is outstanding. I have not seen anything else like it.

For any cynics that suspect I am on the "Spokes payroll", I am not. I am an accountant who has cycling as a hobby.

They sponsor and lead several rides per week. They are fun affairs and they often have snacks at the end. It is more of a social than competitive atmoshpere.

I am happy with the folks at Spokes and am comfortable recommending the shop to friends. As with anything, be an informed and wise shopper.

Prices are a little high. I tend to go to Performance for clothing, water bottles and other small stuff.

The thing about this shop is they sell you what they have not what you need. They are the slick men of the suburbs, they are extremely convincing and highly manipulative. When a customer comes in looking for an entry level bike, they walk out with a pro level 4 year old bike, with a current pro price tag.

    Customer Service

No full time mechanics. Yeah they carry a couple of bike lines but only push Specialized.
Sammy said they stopped carrying Trek because Trek was behind the times, Trek is good enough to win 8 tours but not the riders of DuPage County???

Okay, I think a 3 rating for this shop is where it is at. there are 2 guys who run the place. one guy (name escapes me) he has the longer hair. he is very pleasant to deal with, now he will try to upsell you, but he knows his stuff. the other older guy, balder, is a complete jerk. This store is for people who want to drop 2K+ on a bike. Point in case, I bought a FeltF15 (from longer hair guy) he was awesome in measuring out and getting my bike together that was custom built. Felt F15. I got a great price on it too. About 1000 cheaper than if I would have bought the same felt and upgraded it. I was stoked on this place so I brought some friends there who were looking at 800 dollar mountain bikes, well, the other owner (balder short hair) was a complete a-hole and said, 'well im not going to let you kick the tires if you are not going to buy'. I was completley insulted and embarrassed by his attitude. It was a dry day out, and my buddy just wanted to get it oustide in the parking lot. Well, he ended up going to Village Cycle and buying the exact same bike. I can never recommend this LBS based upon the snobbery that this place is saturated with.

On another note, I have had my FeltF15 for 4 years now, and it is a dream.

    Customer Service

Depends on who you get. If you buy a high end bike, yes, good customer service from the longer hair guy. However, I will never go back or recommend this place based upong the other owner's treatment of me and my friends. It was too bad my first sales guy was not there.

I'm sold on this shop. As a return buyer, I continue to benefit from the recommendations of knowledgeable staff, and from the great choice of top bike frames and components. I find prices to be comparable to other shops in the area. In terms of service, my repairs have always been ready the same or next day. They have also been happy to pack my bike for me when I travel.

    Customer Service

The owner is a degreed engineer and as such, he applies that talent to making sure that his customers have a superb fit on any bikes they purchase. Among my triathlete friends, he is known as "the fit king."
There are also weekly rides from the shop with a big following among long-time customers. As a customer, you definitely get the feeling that the people at Spokes want you to be a happy rider, to really enjoy the sport.
