The shop is small, but you have to keep in mind that this is a small town in south-central Alaska. It is much better stocked than one would expect to find in an area with such a small population. It is clean and bright, and makes for a pleasant atmosphere to just hang out and talk about bikes and riding.

Customer Service

They have a very helpful and knowledgeable crew. I really like doing my own maintenance, and I have found that some mechanics are a bit stingy with their knowledge. (I suppose they have a financial incentive to prolong my ignorance.) The guys at Backcountry, though, have assisted greatly and explained to me what I need to do to fix my own bike. I realize that they are not making any money for doing these repairs, so I try to buy my tools from them so that I can repay them in that way.

They are very conveniently located, right in the downtown area of the city. The front door is maybe 50 yards from a good bike path for road riders (along the Old Glenn Highway). The main roads here are trafficked lightly enough to make for good road riding even without the path. And there are loads of mountain bike trails just a few miles away (Crevasse Moraine and Kepler-Bradley Lakes). On winter rides, especially, it's a nice place to stop and warm up. Sometimes they even have coffee out.
