I have purchased a Steel Fatback from Speedway, via the internet, telephone and email. My main contact was the owner Greg Matyas. My experience with Greg and his employees were nothing short of professional, insightful and patient. Great guys to work with and to correspond with.

Customer Service

They were very knowledgeable about the product and about mountain biking in general. When I was uncertain or completely ignorant about the bike such as sizing, material, components etc. they were able to answer my questions or if they did not know, would research the answer and get back to me. I have been to enough bike shops to recognize when the sales or tech staff knows what they're talking about or when they're blowing smoke. These guys know what they're talking about.

I was ignorant about how long custom bikes take to fabricate and assemble. Greg remained patient with me and let me know he would do whatever he could to get the bike to me as quickly as possible. Some things were simply out of his hands and was clear about those instances. I can't say enough good things about Greg and his employees. I would purchase from Speedway again.

I live about 4,600 miles from these guys, in North Carolina, and found out about them through a bike/wheel builder in my town. Therefore, my review is based on my experience with their proprietary rims, framesets, and hubs as well as their over-the-phone/email customer service.

Customer Service

My first experience with Speedway was with their 100mm wide rims and a pair of Endomorphs which are mounted on my Pugsley. They float the bike effortlessly over the loose Carolina sand and will probably outlast the steel frame which has been tough to keep the corrosion out of(Even with frequent rinsing and frame saver). My Wife loved riding on the beach too, so I turned ol' Pugs over to her and looked for a more corrosion resistant platform to build up. I contacted several Salsa dealers about a Mukluk as well as Greg Matyas at Speedway, and Greg was quick to respond with a solution. Enter the Fatback! Most of my dealings were with Tim Reinbold at Speedway who was very helpful and patient with me and my many phone calls, emails, and questions. I wish I could say that I was equally as patient with waiting for inventory to arrive in their shop but they got the stuff out to me as quickly as they could.

Bottom line is that the Fatback is simply an Animal! Greg at Speedway Cycles designed an outstanding, extreme condition bike and Tim did a great job getting the bike to me along with everything I needed to build exactly what I wanted. This is not just a snow bike! It's amazing on loose sand and any other terrain I've had it on so far.

People in the shop are not overly friendly. There is a definite lack of communication between management and the builders. Lots of high end components.

Customer Service

Poor customer service. I spent a good chunk of change buying a custom built bike. They didn't take the time to check the fit of the bike. There was a long delay from when the order was placed and when the bike was built, so a lot of my requests were lost in translation. When ever I asked specific questions about hubs, bottom brackets, etc, I'd get "it's proprietary, so I can't tell you." If they didn't build snow bikes, I wouldn't even consider going back.

I'll most likely not go back for any future purchases.

Middle to high end mountain and road bikes and the accompaning components. The shop carries Kona, Niner, Look and Fatback bikes. Lots of bikes in stock, though parts and accessories is more limited. This is definetly the place with the most gear for 29ers and winter riding.

Customer Service

Nowadays...POOR!!! I have supported these guys since I got back to AK and found this new shop tucked away on Spenard. When I first went in they were just getting going and product was limited, but exceptable this far north and the customer service was second to none. This summer though has been an entirely different experience. I like Greg (owner) and appreciate the level of support he provides to the cycling community here in town, but the shop is going the way of the other shops in Anchorage. The more employees that are hired, the harder it is to get anything accomplished. No one seems to know what's going on unless you follow up with the exact person you spoke to first.

My personal experience involves paying almost $200 dollars and waiting for over a month to replace a rim on a wheelset that could be ordered for about $250 online. While I can understand where these charges came from, had I known this prior to ordering I would have just purchased another whole wheelset and had the items in-hand three weeks earlier. A friend of mine is still waiting, after three previous attempts, to get an adapter to switch to a 7in rotor on his bike. Another friend broke a brake lever on his Hayes brakes and they replaced the entire brake assembly with a Shimano. Both good brakes, but who rides with one Hayes and one Shimano brake on their bike?

This is a great shop with a fantastic crew. They've made my Hoss all but unbreakable. And I've actually managed to snap steel frames in half before, not to mention what I've done to supposedly top of the line wheels. Since I had Greg fix the Hoss up a few years ago it's been running great, with only minimal maintenance needed. They have a great mix of utility and snow bikes for sale as well.

Customer Service

Excellent

I've shopped at just about every bike shop in Anchorage, and Speedway, along with Chain Reaction, are the best.

It’s July 07. I’m killing time in Anchorage after a 2-week bike tour, waiting for a friend whose flight has been delayed. On a stroll down Spenard I spot this great orange snow bike in a shop window and walk in. Greg is there, and we start a conversation. Turns out he just opened the store, which is stacked with everything to serve first-time shoppers and expert racers alike, as well as memorabilia from Greg's road racing days. All in all the place oozes expertise.
I believe I’m hard to please or impress when it comes to bicycles. I built and maintain a stable of 7 fancy road, track and off-road steeds, ride to work since 1985, and, yes, my toolbox does include a bottom bracket tapping and facing set.
When I inquired about possibly renting a bike for a stroll in town, Greg not only told me about the Tony Knowles trail, but also offered to loan me and my friend a couple of his personal bikes. The next day Amy and I left his shop on a Fat Chance and a Titus. Greg didn’t accept money, nor did he take the driver’s license I handed to him as a “deposit.”

Customer Service

I didn’t have a chance to meet with Greg's staff, but he is still the first person I contact by e-mail with questions about bike gear and repair. If I didn’t live on the East coast, I’d be happy to give Greg all my business.

The only shop worth considering for serious northern winter riding. they're on the cutting edge with all aspects of snowbiking technology, and can offer all the expertise you need concerning the rest of the year and the rest of the terrain as well. The owner and staff are all very involved with the local/regional racing and riding scene, and they will undoubtedly be around for a long time.

Customer Service

I've had nothing but good experiences and welcome friendly attitudes here from the day i showed up in Alaska. Helpful and knowledgeable. I live 40+ miles away and still come to this shop for most of my riding needs.

at first shop seems to be well set up with a combo of high end and low end bikes and parts. BUYER BEWARE !!!!! These are newbee s . The owner couldnt give you the time of day after you lay your money down ... ( even if he knew the time of day)
Bike set up was slip shod at best and dangerous . Stem loose on steerer tube , seat loose on post , bottom bracket not installed properly .
After refusing to give me a refund and promising to "make it right " the owner replaced the 28 dollar seat post with an 18 dollar one , used loctite and over torqued all bolts. Chain out of alignment and grease oozing out of the bottom bracket , gobs of grease on shell . wtf

Customer Service

POOR !!!!!!!!!!!!! to NONE I was told by the owner he was sick of my nit picky bullshxxit after he torqued my biocentric bottom bracket in with the old style set screws and tightened my headset so it binds . Un believable .
If you have a choice between speedway cycles and costco for a bike i highly recommend costco ... or any pawn shop in town . This place will not be in business long !!

Buyer beware . !! If you have a choice of Speedway cycles or any pawn shop in town ... take the pawn shop ... they will know more about bikes than the speedway crew. Maybe they should go back to selling used cars or whatever they did before.
