$25.00 | | Purchased At: | REI | | Strengths: | Nice detailed pictures for simple minded people like me. | | Similar Products Used: | Zinn and the Art which I absolutely hated. | | Bottom Line: | Coming in at a whopping 223 pages, this book covers everything the beginning mechanic will need. It's broken down into 13 chapters and 3 appendixes. The chapters are basic bicycle maintenance, tires and tubes, hubs/rear sprockets, wheel truing, pedals/cranks/bottom brackets, chains, derailleur systems, rim caliper brake systems, caliper brake systems, handlebars/stems/saddles/seatposts, headsets, bike washing, and on the side repairs. The 3 appendixes are the Park suggested tool list, glossary of terms, and recommended torque for components.
Overall I enjoy the book. The pictures are big and detailed (but not so detailed you don't want to read it). Big triangle caution signs that say 'don't forget this' or 'do this first for ease of installation.' It covers road and mountain but I feel like it's geared for mountain; that may be because I'm partial to mountain bikes but whatever. Overall I give this book a solid review.
If you work in a shop, this probably isn't the book for you. But if you're just learning to wrench on your own, it's perfect! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
