It handles very well on flowy technical rhythm sections, and negotiating steep gnarly downhills. Flickability, jumpability, and firm pedalling are its most enjoyable assets.

They got bent all to hell and couldn't be straightened out. The X-7 shifters broke the second or third time I crashed but that was my fault, I put X-9's on it and now I'm even happier with it. The Truvativ 110mm stem that came w/ it is too long for FR and will be replaced shortly. I caught the left crank arm on the edge of a brick wall doing 25mph riding urban and bent up the Wellgo peddals that came with it. They were good tho but I got Funn Soljam Vipers and they own. The crank arm got a little tweaked but the BB is still perfect. Handles smallish drop-offs great I'm in ohio and you dont really see drops bigger than 6-8 feet very often so this is a good bike for our little DH scene. The Vanilla R has no bob (pro-pedal) and the rebound adjustment is nice. I've ridden the bike for a little over a month and so far it's everything I've wanted it to be. I took it to Pedrosfest and really broke it in and it handled everything I threw at it. I don't go crazy on drops but I do mix it up a little. This bike is branded All Mountain and thats probably about right. To me it's basically a harder core x country bike. Heavier than some people would like but not that bad. Climbs fairly well and the suspension does a good job. Downhill it is also well suited. Pedal bob is not really noticeable at all to me, and thats probably due to the pivot design, and pro-pedal of the fox shock. For the price it is a great frame. It took a couple of rides to get it tuned, but it's running great now (big thanks to Mark and the Guys at Effigners - Boundbrook NJ "The best shop in Jersey!"). I'm 215 lbs & I really beat on a bike so I needed a stronger spring for the X-Fusion coil shock. I got the spring and the problem was solved. Once set-up, this is an outstanding frame for a heavy guy. | | Weaknesses: | The stock fram came with a 350lb spring which is useless if you plan on riding the bike over rocks. This problem was quickly remided by the guys at X-Fusion swapped the spring for free (less shipping). Now i have a 650 lb spring. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Fuel 95, Raleigh Titus, Trek 930 | | Bike Setup: | Psylo Fork, XT rear, LX front. The Vanilla seams to be the perfect match for this bike, and the shifting hasn't had one problem yet. The brakes feal like they're hydraulic after they broke in a little. Holds up to jumping every day after school and four foot drops to a flat landing quite nicely. This is where the shock's unadjustable, slow rebound is OK. | | Weaknesses: | On the flip side, flyin' down tails at around 30mph+ is not too smart. The shock doesn't spring all the way back in time to soak up the next hit. Also, this bike isn't the greatest at climbing due partially to the weight(~34lbs) but mostly the pedal bob... a nice shock with more adjustability will fix it all! AND THE TIRES!!! man, you have to be careful with these things! They don't grip too well on hard packed dirt, but at the same time nearly impossible to lock up the front brake. But I love it now that I got used to it. My first full suspension bike, I've bashed it pretty darn hard and it takes it all. Wheels aren't the best, I've bent them up pretty good already.
My buddy had an extra 120mm manitou black fork lying around, I bought it cheap and it helped the plushness.
The only real weakness is when you try to climb steep hills. When you transition from sitting to standing the bike starts bobbing and the rear wheel spins up. I'm thinking of upgrading the rear shock to a FOX DHX air (big money) but I think/hope the pro-pedal will keep it from bobbing so bad. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

Instead of trying to sell it and buy a more expensive bike I decided to build it up a little more. The bike was fine stock but with a little money it is a way better performer. Nex upgrade is a new crank and maybe a guide or a bashguard.
Since my bike is nowhere near stock I can only really review the frame. It is pretty sturdy and can handle what you dish out but is limited only by its rear travel and single pivotness. Ladies seem to dig the colour. | | Weaknesses: | It's heavy. There are a some creeks from the suspension pivots. Lack of adjustment on both the rear and front shocks. | | Similar Products Used: | An old Norco that I forget the name of. | | Bike Setup: | Stock, with some cushy Oury grips and Hutchinson Aligator tires. | | Bottom Line: | It's an awsome bike for the price. I used to ride all the time then stopped for about 5 years. I usually ride for about an hour and a half 4 times a week in the warm months with a long ride on the weekends and the bike's given me no probs.
The suspension could have more adjustments (like lockout) but for the price the fork and rear work great. The BAR rear shock is not as bad as the reviews would indicate and has lost no air.
Dump the grips and get some Oury's. Your hands will thank you. You also should replace the tires. The stockers are heavy and you'll feel a big difference with a lighter tire (less rotational weight).
I'm a struggling student so this bike was perfect for me. If you want a bike that you can get into the magical world of full suspension with and are tight on cash, this is a great bike. The best analogy I heard on MTBR was that it's a "poor mans Heckler". | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

For moderate trail riding, they are not as bad as advertised. I can't complain about the bike at all. It is a perfect all mountain ( trail ) bike that you can get a little crazy on. I use it on singletrack that is peppered with log crossings, jumps, log stunts, and natural drops and for this type of riding, the bike is perfect. I don't think I would classify it as a freeride bike, but if you like to do some moderate jumping and drops you will have no problems. On this bike I would say six feet ( with a tranny ) would be about right. If you think you would go bigger I would wait for the six inch travel version ( the only thing I would wish for ).
I am really hard on cranks and the FSA's have given me no problems whatsoever, the Sram deraileurs also work great. I have had the Sole' breaks back for adjusting twice, and I would budget for a fork upgrade in the near future if you are more than a recreational rider. But all things considered, since you can get this bike on closeout for under 850.00 you can't really complain. I see lots of fork bargains on the web right now ( minutes and Fox if you want to lighten up or Sherman Flicks and Fireflies if you go bigger ) that would give you an awesome ride for about a grand! | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |
