    Date Reviewed: June 16, 2008
    Favorite Trail:wherever
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Not as bad as stock shimano pads. Stop moderately OK (not as bad as shimano pads).
Weaknesses:"Rim Wrangler"??? is this a typo? Should be "Rim Mangler".
Similar Products Used:Shimano XT & LX, Kool Stop, Clarke
    Bike Setup:29er frankenbike
Bottom Line:Came stock with a set of Avid SD7s - brilliant caliper, crap pad. After 1 wet and 1 dry ride on a sandy trail I had to take the emery paper to my brand new rims and pick out little shards of rim from the pads. Swapped out for kool stops and now all is right with the world.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Strengths:Solid, Lightweight
Weaknesses:the stock DINA pads are horrible, unless you love squeal!!
    Similar Products Used:Koolstop, jagwire
Bike Setup:Kona Hot, xtr, thomson, avid ultimates
Bottom Line:I spent a couple hours trying to set-up these pads. Initially set-up with no toe, then with toe, squeeled like crazy regardless. I don't understand why avid would ship these pads with the avid black-ops ultimates. IMO these pads are crap. Replaced the pads with some kool-stops inserts and the squeal disappeared!

    Strengths:haha
Weaknesses:They scratched my brand new freaking rim.
Similar Products Used:first cartrage style pad
Bike Setup:GT backwoods ENOized to SS
Bottom Line:These things SUCK. They didnt work any better then the aztec pads i had on my old bike, even though they were on my SD SL's. They felt no better then the old bike(which should not be the case, as the old bike as a middle of the road schwinn that i bought like 5 years ago).
I took the off after 2 rides, and one ride was a flat rails to trails trail with almost no braking. But they still managed to mess up my rim a bit DUE TO THE PEICE OF STINKING METAL IN THE PAD!!!!!! If you get avid SD's change the pad before you ride. The braking preformance of you brakes will suffer(your brakes are only as good as your pad, and these pads just dont hack it), and possibly your rim too. I actually just put some schimano pads in, and in the little(like a trip across my basment) they felt better and no horible noise. If i could give these no chilis or less i would.

    Strengths:great grip - no fatigue
    Weaknesses:wears fast
    Similar Products Used:lots
Bike Setup:01 GT avalanche 2.0 (these pads are on an SD 7)
Bottom Line:the pads are easy to replace -cartridges make a world of difference ;-) i probably put close to 2000 miles on one set of pads before i had to replace em. it's easy to tell when to replace though- you have jack for brake modulation.. it's either locked or not helping much at all when they are worn out. untill they wear out they are awesome. pads are cheap anyways so who cares if they wear fast

    Weaknesses:none yet
    Similar Products Used:original shimano pads
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock Trek 4900
Bottom Line:great break pad for the money if you are looking for great stopping power

Submitted by Matt a Cross Country Rider from Berkeley, CA
    Date Reviewed: June 6, 2003
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Strengths:Better than Shimano LX
    Weaknesses:friction/stopping power
Similar Products Used:LX, Rim Wrangler 1s, WTB Dual Compound
Bike Setup:Avid Arch Rival brakes, Salsa aluminum brake booster on front
Bottom Line:I've been using these on the rear for a long time, and they stopped just fine. But recently I discovered that my WTB Dual Compound (you know, with the "cleaning" orange edge) were scraping away my rim sidewalls like sandpaper, so I put these on. Not a good switch. I'll bet my stopping distance increased by a third.

I just bought two pair of WTB Razor Blade standard pads. Based on past experience, I'll bet they work a lot better. If you buy a pair of Avid brakes, immediately switch out the pads.

    Price Paid: $8.00
    Purchased At:Ebay
    Strengths:Looks cool.
Weaknesses:Not very impressive in the performance department. Almost got hit by a truck cruising downtown because these damn things won't stop the bike at an intersection. My fault for not tossing these out sooner.
    Similar Products Used:Nothing this bad.
Bike Setup:My poor Uzzi SL, almost got slam by a pickup.
Bottom Line:I wasted $8+ shipping on these damn things.

    Purchased At:Came stock on Stumpjumper
Strengths:They worked great for about 10 mins while i was riding in my driveway
Weaknesses:They suck, my back wheel locks up and skids all the time and the front has no modulation
    Similar Products Used:Tektro stock pads
Bottom Line:Don't buy these, they suck. I'm replacing mine right now.

    Date Reviewed: April 4, 2003
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Similar Products Used:LX, XTR, Ritchey Blue, Ritchey Black
Bike Setup:Santana tandem w/ Avid SD ultimate brakes and mavic T217 rims, Riders + bike weight 330 Lb
Bottom Line:These pads heat very quickly and then become overly sticky and unpredictable. On the front this means extremely poor modulation. On the back, the wheel locks unpredictably on hard or high speed braking. The pads were about 3/4 gone after one ride. The brake locking along with just a little bad luck with a car coming the other way could have killed us. These pads are history!!

    Date Reviewed: March 23, 2003
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Strengths:Ok for street use.
Weaknesses:Fail in wet/muddy conditions. Over heat quickly in hard use. Removed pads and found bits of aluminum inbedded deeply in the pads, scored the rim. These pads have no bussiness being on a mtn. bike...
Similar Products Used:Nothing I ever used sucked as much as these pads.
    Bike Setup:Stumpjumper fsr
Bottom Line:Toss these asap go with the salmon colered Koolstops or WTB razor blades..

    Strengths:none
    Weaknesses:aside from being totally useless,none
    Similar Products Used:koolstop
    Bike Setup:fuel 90
Bottom Line:this tripe came with my avid 7s when i upgraded.i asked the wrench to put my koolstops back on but the buzzard said he couldnt force himself since the wranglers were supposed to be plush high end stuff.they desinigrated (sp?) in less than one hour in mud and snow.if you look up the term "mountain bike" in the dictionary it says something to the effect of bicycle designed for all terrain all WEATHER use.somebody didnt get the word.lets review :no stopping power, sandblasts rims, disolves in water. totally unsat.dont deserve even 1 inflamed bung hole.

Strengths:good stopping power for lighter riders
Weaknesses:wear down FAST with heavy riders, don't stop well after being covered in gravel dust
    Similar Products Used:shimano M system, generics, kool-stop eagle 2
    Bike Setup:Bridgestone MB-6 alivio/schwinn/avid/mongoose parts
Bottom Line:good pads for light weight riders, but kool-stop eagle 2 threaded pads are much better for riders over 200 lbs
